You will be able to explain the steps of the digestive system AND be able to identify the functions

the organs and tissues hold.

Lesson Objective:

What would happen to your body over time if you stopped eating food?

The Digestive System:•Turns food and liquids into the building blocks and fuel the body needs.

Step 1: Saliva•Saliva (spit) is created. •Seeing and smelling something that looks good creates saliva.

Step 2: Mouth & Salivary Glands•Salivary glands continue to make saliva. •Teeth break down food. •Tongue mixes it with saliva.

Step 3: Esophagus•The esophagus connects your throat to your stomach.•Muscles in the esophagus contract, pushing the food down.

Step 4: Stomach•Food is broken down further. •Digestive glands produce stomach acid. •Stomach acid breaks down the food into a semifluid.

Step 5: Pancreas, Liver, & Gallbladder•Pancreas releases a digestive enzyme that helps break down proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. •Liver produces “bile”, a liquid that helps digest fats. •Gallbladder stores the bile that the liver creates.

Step 6: Small Intestine •Breaks down the food into nutrients that the body can absorb. •Once it reaches the end of the small intestine, only some water and waste remains.

How long do you think your

intestines are??

•They are over 27 feet long!!•That’s nearly the length it takes to get a 1st down in football!

Step 7: Large Intestine•Waste is pushed down into your rectum, eventually signaling you need to go to the bathroom. •Waste exits your body, nutrients stay in.

Large Intestine Rectum

The esophagus connects the ______ and the ______.A – Small Intestine, Large IntestineB – Throat, StomachC – Stomach, Small IntestineD – Tongue, Throat

Saliva is the first step of the Digestive System. What creates it?A – Pancreas B – Liver C – Salivary Glands D – Esophagus

What organ breaks down the food into nutrients that the body can actually absorb?A – Small IntestineB – Large IntestineC – Stomach D – Rectum

The liver, pancreas, and _______ are all a part of the same step. A – Teeth B – Stomach C – Gallbladder D – Large Intestine

What is the main purpose of the Digestive System?A – To break down food into nutrients.B – To break down food into waste. C – To create bile. D – To create saliva.
