The sonification algorithm

Sonification: a sonic description of the dataVirtually everything can be turned into music!Melody generated by associating a note to each letter. The note pitch chosen according to the position of the letter into the English alphabetMusic scale is customisable, this demo uses a diatonic scale. According to this mapping,

The letter ”S”, for example, will sound a tone higher than letter ”R” The letter ”T” two tones higher and so on.

The duration of the notes has been chosen as follows: vowels duration is set to 1/8 (quaver) consonants duration is set to 1/16 (semiquaver).

Our demo today

Sonification of tweets tagged with #SC11 from 11.00AM to 11.15AM (Seattle Time)Tweets collected in Seattle (from SC11) The text is sent via Scinet Internet 2 GEANT to the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI)EGI runs an original grid-enabled sonification package The text is converted into a melodyThe melody is sent back to Seattle from Europe via GEANT Internet 2

ScinetAfter a quick arrangement and mix…

it is played at SC11 in Seattle
