WHAT IS TOBACCO?

• Tobacco is a plant that grows in warm humid climates.

• When being prepared for use, the leaves are dried and aged for two or three years, then mixed with chemicals to make specific products.

TOBACCO PRODUCTS

• Cigarettes• Cigars• Chew• Snuff

HERE ARE THE FACTS:

• Each cigarette contains 4000 chemicals

• 200 are poisonous

• more than 40 are known to cause CANCER!

• Smoking causes 450,000 premature DEATHS a year.• 205,000 People are Diagnosed

with lung cancer every year.

TOBACCO IS THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE

OF PREVENTABLE DEATH IN THE UNITED

STATES

NICOTINE• Addictive Drug: This means your body has a

physiological or psychological dependence.

• Nicotine is a stimulant.

• Increases (speeds up) the action of the central nervous system, the heart, and other organs

• Reaches the brain in eight seconds after you inhale it:

• Increases blood pressure

• Faster respiration

• Constricts arteries

CARCINOGENS

• A carcinogen is a substance that is capable of causing cancer in humans or animals.

• CARCINOGENS ARE FOUND IN CIGARETTE SMOKE!

CIGARETTE SMOKE

Cigarette smoke contains

Tar:• A thick, sticky, dark fluid produced

when tobacco burns.

Cigarette smoke contains Carbon Monoxide:

•A colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas.

TOBACCO ISN'T JUST IN CIGARETTES

• Like Cigarettes, smoking pipes or cigars have major health risks.

• Cigars contain more nicotine and

produce more tar and carbon monoxide.

• Pipe and cigar smokers have an increased risk of developing

cancers of the lip, mouth and throat.1 cigar=1 pack of cigarettes!

SMOKELESS TOBACCO

• Smokeless Tobacco:

• tobacco that is sniffed through the nose, held in the mouth, or chewed.

• It is the most harmful type of tobacco product to our

bodies and health.• It comes in two forms:

• Snuff

• Chewing Tobacco

DEFINITIONS

• Snuff- fine-grain tobacco that often comes in teabag-like pouches that users "pinch" or "dip" between their lower lip and gum.

• Chewing Tobacco- comes in shredded, twisted, or "bricked" tobacco leaves that users put between their cheek and gum.

DANGERS OF CHEWING TOBACCO

• Cracking and Bleeding lips and gums

• Receding gums (which can eventually make your teeth fall out)

• Increased heart rate, High blood pressure, and Irregular heartbeats

• all leading to a greater risk of heart attacks.

• Cancer

LEUKOPLAKIA• Thickened, white, leathery-looking spots on the inside of the mouth that

can develop into

oral cancer.

• Carbon monoxide – odorless, colorless, poisonous gas that is produced when tobacco burns, leads to heart attack.

• Hydrogen Cyanide: is used to kill rats and it was used during WWII as a genocidal agent.

• Benzene: used in manufacturing gasoline.

• Acetone: nail polish remover

• Formaldehyde: This is what they use to preserve bodies. It’s also used as an industrial fungicide, is a disinfectant, and is used in glues and adhesives.
