Sixth Sunday of Easter 25th / 26th May 2019
Come, Holy Spirit!
On this 6th Sunday of Easter, the Holy Spirit is one central “person” (third person of the
Holy Trinity) that featured in all our three readings today. As Jesus was gradually approaching
the end of his earthly ministry, and getting ready to ascend to his father in heaven, he looked at
his disciples’ face and seeing that they were going to miss him, he said “I will not leave you
orphans, but will ask my father to send you another advocate to guide you and to remind you of
all that I have thought you”. (John 14: 16) Certainly, Jesus knew the devastating impact his
absence will have on his disciples and followers and he promised to remain with them in the
person of the Holy Spirit, the advocate.
In the first reading, and in fact in the whole of Acts of the Apostles, the Apostles did not
take any decisions without consulting the Holy Spirit. Also, they could not carry out any serious
mission without the Holy Spirit. “The Holy Spirit and we have decided,” they said. The second
reading begins thus: “In the Spirit, the angel took me to the top of an enormous mountain…” Of
course, there is no way John could have seen these things without the help of the Holy Spirit. And
today, Jesus assures us that the Holy Spirit will teach and remind us of all He himself had taught
us. So, all we need to do is to remain docile and attentive to the counsel of the Holy Spirit.
At no time in the history of our world has the need to listen to the Holy Spirit been more
crucial than at our own time. As followers of Christ, there are so many intrigues, perplexities and
injustices that we must contend with in our world today. Only those who listen to the Holy Spirit
can understand the reasons for these and where they are leading us to. All we need to do is to be
attentive to him, and allow him to inspire us.
Finally, dear friends, as we approach the end of the Easter season, and as we prepare to
renew our relationship once again at the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Pentecost, may we
continue to allow the Holy Spirit to teach us so that we may understand God’s divine plans for us.
Peace be with you!
Fr Lucius
