Dynamic variations in white and colored light can help maintain the patient’s circadian rhythm, which maintain normal sleep patterns and may optimize therapeutic efficacy.

• In the morning, short wavelengths of blue light cue the body to produce Cortisol, Serotonin and other hormones and neurotransmitters that cause blood pressure to increase and body temperature to rise.

• In the evening, the body responds to darkness and longer wavelengths of red light by producing the hormone Melatonin and dropping the blood pressure in preparation for sleep.

CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS

• Slips and falls are a leading cause of unintentional injury in the US. Which can lead to increased patient stay duration and possible lawsuits.

• Incidents can be avoided by proper night lighting and locating switches within reach or on touch or occupancy sensors.

• Use Amber to Red light for night lighting.

PATIENT HALO

-Soothing shifts of color to create a comforting atmosphere for the patient and visitors.

-In an emergency, can be quickly converted into an exam light for staff.

-The tone and brightness of white light can also be controlled by the staff for diagnosis.

-Neutral, white light can be used for general examinations.

EVIDENCE-BASED DESIGN

LIGHTING DESIGN AFFECTS EACH CATEGORY OF EBD

Environmental - Focus on stress reduction:Social support (patients, family, staff)Control (privacy, choices, escape)Positive distractions (artwork, music, entertainment)Nature (plants, flowers, water, wildlife, nature sounds)

Medical:Treatment modalities (models of care and technology)Quality and safety (infections, errors, falls)Exercise (exertion, rehabilitation)

Administrative:Financial performance (margin, cost per patient day, nursing hours)Operational efficiency (transfers, utilization, resource conservation)Satisfaction (patient, staff, physician turnover)

Evidence-based metrics: Work measurement (time studies)

Efficiency designsPatient and resource workflow
