Saint Cecilia,patroness of the musicians

By Patricia de Wolfschoon

The Musician´s Saint• Saint Cecilia is one of the most famous of the Roman martyrs. A martyr is a

person who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce religious believes.

• Her feast day, November 22nd, has been celebrated since about the fourth century (Medieval times).

• She was a noble Roman lady who, along with her husband, suffered a cruel death. She died under Emperor Marcus Aurelius between 176 and 180.

• According to the story, she was forced by her parents to marry a nobleman named Valerian. During the wedding, Cecilia sat apart singing to God in her heart, and for that, she was later declared the saint of musicians.

• Cecilia told Valerian that she had an angel of the lord (God) watching over her.

• When Valerian asked to see the angel, Cecilia replied that he would see the angel if he would go to the Appian way and be baptized by the Pope of Rome.

• After his baptism, he found an angel standing by the side of Cecilia, crowning her with a garland of flowers (roses and lilies).

• After Cecilia died, they killed Valerian and his brother.

• Saint Cecilia asked the pope to convert her home into a Church and since then, she has been the Saint of the Musicians.
