Saint Gregory the Great (540‐604) September 3

I magine, fourteen hundred years a er death, boas ng a best‐selling CD! Yet outside the Church and within, Gre‐gorian chant is enjoying a renaissance. S ll, the meless

sacred music that bears his name is but part of Gregory’s legacy. Renouncing civic service for monas c life, Gregory’s administra‐

ve and diploma c skills prompted con nual summons from the cloister. Papal ambassador and advisor, he was eventually elected pope himself, renowned as a wise steward of the church’s materi‐al possessions, generous benefactor of the poor, sponsor of mis‐sionaries, and promotor of monas cism. His liturgical enrichment of the Church endures not only in Gregorian chant, but in elo‐quent homilies s ll gracing the Liturgy of the Hours, the “Gregorian Canon” (Eucharis c Prayer I), and his spiritual classic, Pastoral Care, once presented to new bishops at ordina on. Of countless impressive papal tles—Supreme Pon ff, Vicar of Christ, Successor of Saint Peter, Prince of the Apostles—the tle s ll so cherished that it heads official documents is the one Greg‐ory coined to describe his papal ideal: Servant of the Servants of God. Together with being designated “the Great,” a fi ng epi‐taph. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

No obstante

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Holy Father's Prayer Intentions for September, 2020

Universal prayer inten on

Respect for the Planet’s Resources We pray that the planet’s resources will not be plun‐dered, but shared in a just and respec ul manner.

“FEED THE HUNGRY” These words, spoken by Jesus, are just as relevant today in

Western North Carolina as when they were proclaimed

2000 years ago. Food insecurity has been a major issue in

Western North Carolina for years and recently the problem

has go en considerably worse due to the Covid‐19 pan‐

demic. St Barnabas’s St Vincent DePaul Society recognized

this issue about 12 years ago and established a small food

pantry serving Buncombe and Henderson Coun es. Under

the outstanding leadership of Vincen an Fred Petrazio, the

pantry has grown not only to be a signifi‐

cant element of our ministry but a lifeline

to many of our neighbors. During 2019,

we distributed a total of 5,500 food boxes

to 1,500 needy individuals and families.

Post Covid, the demand has increased by

30% ‐ 40%. The primary source of income

to support the pantry is generous dona‐

ons from our parishioners. Over the past

several years we have also been relying on

annual grants from several organiza ons to supplement

our parish’s generosity in order to sustain our growth. We

never want to turn a needy individual or family away due

to lack of resources.

One of the organiza ons we partner with is the Henderson County Hunger Coali on, who has graciously awarded us grants over the past 2 years. The Hunger Coali on distrib‐utes funding through grants to the 11 coali on members who all operate food distribu on centers in and around Henderson County. For the past 37 years, the Hunger Coa‐li on’s primary fundraising ac vity has been an annual “Hunger Walk” involving hundreds of volunteers from vari‐ous coali on agencies. Dona ons were based on the num‐ber of miles walked. This year, however, the “Hunger Walk” has been cancelled due to the Covid‐19 virus. In‐stead there will be a “Virtual” walk. Individuals from the coali on agencies are being encouraged to set up their own walk to raise money. The goal is to raise $100,000.

Vincen an Bob May and his wife Cathy have volunteered to walk 3‐5 miles on Sep 22 to represent the St Vincent DePaul Society of St Barnabas Church in the virtual hunger walk. Here’s what you can do to help: Donate to support Bob and Cathy’s walk. All the funds will go directly to the Hunger Coali on to feed needy individuals and families in our community. As Catholics and Chris ans, we have a responsibility to love and care for our neighbors and this is a great way to respond to the Lord’s command to “feed the hungry”.

If you can donate, please make checks payable to Hender‐son County Hunger Coali on or put cash dona ons in an envelope marked with HCHC on the front and deposit them in the “poor box”, located near the food pantry. Do‐na ons must be submi ed before Sat Sep 26.

Thank you for your generosity.
