The Holidays aren’t always “Jolly” for all.
For many people the holiday season may not be a flurry of activities - parties, shopping, caroling...in fact for many it may be a trigger for a bout of depression.
In our part of the country SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is quite common. People may be oversleeping, experiencing daytime fatigue, or craving carbohydrates as well as feeling hopeless, having suicidal thoughts and decreasing socialization.
At Prairie Harvest Mental Health a number of the people we serve experience SAD along with other mental health concerns such as schizophrenia, bi-polar, major depression. Often times they are prescribed a light box along with their usual medications. The light box artificially simulates sunlight.
We encourage people to become more active so they do not isolate. We have exercise groups, organized outings, movie night and a variety of other events.

Prairie Harvest Mental Health staff prepare and share holiday meals and at Christmas include a gift. For many this gift is the only package they receive.
How can you help?
Just knowing there are compassionate people who care sometimes is enough to lift
the spirit of someone who is struggling.
Your donations of personal care products, hats, mittens/gloves, scarves or household
items will help us provide a gift (for over 100 individuals). A monetary gift of just $5.00
will pay for 2 holiday meals.
On behalf of Prairie Harvest Mental Health Consumers, Board of Directors and Staff, I
thank you and wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season.
Deb Johnson, Chief Executive Officer

How Are We Doing?
Prairie Harvest Mental Health asked 118 consumers to complete Outcome
Surveys in 2014. (To see the full report go to www.prairieharvest.net.) Below is
the question, “Are you satisfied with the following Prairie Harvest Mental Health
services?” The answer to this question is vital to how we conduct business. The
Board of Directors and management analyze the full report to help us with our
planning for future services. Our priorities are to provide housing and services
that promote mental health wellness and recovery. Other areas in the survey
include employment, involvement in goal setting how, they are treated by staff,
cultural sensitivity of staff, social acceptance and overall well-being.

Prairie Harvest Mental Health is please to announce that we have been selected to participate in
2015 Giving Hearts Day. We couldn’t possibly accomplish our work without donors like you.
What is Giving Hearts Day?
Giving Hearts Day is the biggest charity day of the year. It’s a day dedicated to giving: donations of $10 or more are magnified by match funding. In just 24 hours, millions are raised by nonprofits for doing good locally.
Last year, Giving Hearts Day raised $5.7 million for charity
in North Dakota and western Minnesota. More than
24,000 online gifts were made!
With your help, Prairie Harvest Mental Health can raise a
tremendous amount of money to support our mission. If
Prairie Harvest Mental Health is one of the top ten
organizations to receive the most online contributions, we
will receive additional funding from Dakota Medical Foundation!
On Thursday, February 12, 2015 the impact of your giving is multiplied with match funding from
Dakota Medical Foundation by going to impactgiveback.org and donating $10 or greater.
FACT: Half of all mental health
disorders show first signs before a
person turns 14 years old, and three
quarters of mental health disorders
begin before age 24.
