Target maintenanceIn general

Target maintenanceThe electronic target is designed as a sound measuring chamber. The measuring bar with its electronics is placed in the protected lower area of the target. The condition of the sound measuring chamber and the measuring bar with its electronics and micropho-nes is is of major importance for the precision and reliability of the system.

Each shooter is in need of a clear target picture. So please pay the necessary attention to a correctly aligned target picture in optically perfect condition on the front frame.

The schedule on page 4 is a guide to the necessary maintenance of the targets. All mentioned maintenance works are described in this manual.

Visual inspection of target

Visual inspection of targetFront frameCheck, if the target picture on the front frame is in optical perfect condition. If necessary, glue on a new center patch (see page 8). Repair cuts and other damages (see page 10).

Main frameDismount the front frame. Check the front and the rear skin of the target. If necessary, repair any damages caused by ricochets (see page 10).

Check the endless rubber band if appropriate and turn it onwards, if the target section has too many holes (see page 15).

ATTENTION

► Bulged rubber bands are caused by excessive use in the same area. Prevent bulging by turning onwards in time.

► Open the cover of the measuring bar. Check, if the microphones are clean. If necessary, clean the microphones and the measuring bar (see page 9). There is tensile stress of the target skin on the cover of the measuring bar. The cover must be held tightly and opened carefully.

In general

Maintenance of front frameThe front frame holds the target picture. It has no effect on the electronic scoring detection. But each shooter is in need of a clear target picture. So please pay the necessary attention to a clean target picture in optically perfect condition on the front frame.

The front frame consists of a strutted wooden frame. The target skin (top foil) with the target picture is mounted on it. Polystyrene panels are placed between the struts and the target skin. This prevents fluttering of the target picture during high winds.

Worn-out, bulged target centersGlue over with size matching center patches.

Two different sizes of center pachtes for A-targets are available. Start with the large center patch (Ø 60cm). Second use the smaller one (Ø 40cm), then a large one again followed by a small one, a.s.o. For B-targets center patches and complete target front masks are available.

ATTENTION

► On the original target front mask the aiming point is aligned to the electronic target centre. For this reason you must align the large center patches precisely as per the original target front mask.

Cleaning of measuring bar

1 Cover of measuring bar2 Microphones3 Measuring bar4 Temperature sensor 5 Electronics

Cleaning of measuring barClean the measuring bars at regular intervals. The measuring microphones must be clean. The must not be soiled by residues of the target skin, the endless rubber band or ricochets.

If the maintenance intervals are too long, stubborn soiling on the microphones could appear, which can not be removed with a brush.

ATTENTION

► There is tensile stress of the target skin on the cover of the measuring bar. The cover must be held tightly and opened carefully.

How to proceed:

• Hold the cover tightly and open both bayonet locks. Open the cover carefully towards the top.

• Remove any scraps and fragments of bullets or ricochets.

• Clean the measuring electronics and the microphones with a paint brush or a brush, or use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush head.

• Remove stubborn soiling on the microphones with a lint-free cloth, which is moistened with a lukewarm soap solution. The cloth should not be wet, just moistened. Then, wipe the microphones with a dry cloth.

• Close the cover and the bayonet locks.

Damages due to ricochetsThe target must form a closed acoustic chamber. Larger cuts in the target skin could cause incorrect measurements. Damages due to ricochets outside the area of the endless rubber band must be repaired.

How to proceed:

• Remove the front frame. Check the target skin on the front and back side of the main frame.

• Clean the areas around larger holes (of Ø 5mm or over) and cuts with acetone. Then glue over this areas with instant glue CA15G and ricochet repair patches.

• Check the rain protection cover/profile and replace defect parts.

• Repair damages of the wooden frame with waterproofed wood glue.

ATTENTION

► The instant glue must be stored in a cool place, otherwise it dries out. The instant glue cannot be deluted.

Cutting out and recutting of target skin

Cutting out and recutting of target skinIf the target skin is heavily holed in the target centre so that tears of more than 10–15mm have occured, it must be cut out and the endless rubber band must be mounted. If the cut out part is frayed (rubber parts hanging into the acoustic chamber) recutting is necessary.

How to proceed:

• Remove the front frame.

• Cut out the target skin with scissors according to the painted contour.

• The target skin on the back can be recutted later. Sufficient overlapping (at least 10cm) of the endless rubber band must be ensured.

Front Back

Further procedure:

• Clean the measuring bar > no soiling by residues of target skin, endless rubber band or ricochets on the microphones. Close the cover of the measuring bar.

• Turn the endless rubber band onwards or, if necessary, replace it by a new one.

• Place the rain cover (overlapping the endless rubber band) or affix the rear multi wall panel again.

• Mount the front frame to the main fraim.

ATTENTION

► For cutting and recutting of the target skin use always scissors, no knife.

If using a knife: the target skin could tear or the opposite target skin could be damaged.

The target skin may only be cut out to the extent that the endless rubber band can still perfectly cover the cutouts. Sufficient overlapping (at least 10cm) of the endless rubber band must be ensured.

Endless rubber bandWith the increasing operating time the target skin starts to be holed, bulged and starts to tear in the target centre. It loses its elasticity. This causes an attenuation of the sound waves, which can produce measurement errors. By mounting a endless rubber band, the sound chamber will be closed properly.

Mounting of endless rubber bandEndless rubber band

Mounting of endless rubber band

ATTENTION

► The endless rubber band should be mounted at an outside temperature of 21 degrees. If the temperature is lower, the endless rubber band must be stored at least for 4 hours at room temperature (not less than 22ºC). It may only be removed from the storage facility just before mounting.

Two persons are needed for mounting.

Two planed wood strips or battens are also needed.

How to proceed:

• Remove the front frame and the rain cover. Provide the endless rubber band and the two wooden mounting sticks. Winter period: store in a heated room in a timely manner.

• Apply the sticks into the endless rubber band, sloping faces to the inside. Later, they must face the sides of the main frame.

• Lift up the rubber band and the wooden sticks. Place both sticks on the outer sides up on the main frame. Tension the rubber band by using the wooden sticks and draw it over the main fraim. (Fig. 2)

• Pull the endless rubber band by means of the ledges so far over the main frame until the rubber band is fully covering the cutouts (Fig. 3)

• Remove the wooden sticks by tipping over sideways and pulling out. (Fig. 4)

• Mount the rear panel and the rain cover.

• Mount the front frame to the main frame.

Turning the endless rubber band onwards

Turning the endless rubber band onwards

With the increasing operating time the target skin starts to be holed in the target centre. Now it must be turn onwards, otherwise it starts bulging and loses its elasticity.

By turning onwards a new, unused and elastic part of the rubber band will cover the target center.

ATTENTION

► Bulged rubber bands indicate an excessive use in the same position. Prevent bulging by turning onwards in time. If the rubber band starts fluttering and is not seated solidly anymore, it must be replaced by a new one.

Two persons are needed to turn the the endless rubber band onwards.

How to proceed:

• Remove the front frame and the rear panel.

• One person stands behind, the other one diagonally opposite in front of the target.

• Lift the rubber band with both hands a bit up and pull it coincident about 10–15cm in the same direction.

• Mount the front frame again.

• Check the position of the rain cover (overlapping the endless rubber band) .
