RESTORATION:-
The return of constitution monarchy to Great Britain in 1600
under Charles 2. The period between the crowning of Charles 2
and the revolution of 1688
CHARLES 1
(19-11-1600 TO 30-1-1688)
He was born in Scotland. He was
the second surviv ing son of
James 1 of Scotland. In March 1625
Charles 1 became the king.
In 1629 Charles dismissed parliament, determined to rule about alone, but his controversial methods or moot behavior of rising income and divisive religious policies caused an uprising amongst the Puritans.
OLIVER CROMWELL (25-4-1599 TO 3-9-1658)
Oliver Cromwell was an English military and polit ical leader and later Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland.
In 1642 the puritan revolution began led by Oliver Cromwell which resulted in Charles being overthrown and beheaded .. Cromwell then took the leadership of the county being known as the Lord Protectorate. This was only time in the history that Britain was not run by a monarch.
Cromwell outlawed the theater because of its connections with the monarchy and a/c to his puritan values was immoral.
Charles II (29-5-1630 TO6-2-1685)
He was the son of King Charles 1. After the
death of Cromwell in 1668 the protectorate began to collapse and 1660 parliament voted to restore Charles 2 to
the throne .
ARRIVAL OF CHARLES 2
As Charles 2 was living in France before the
monarchy so he brought some of the French culture
and literature with him.Charles 2 was a man of
progressive thoughts. His French upbringing
generates a rational mind in him. English started
imitating the French culture. Royal society was established to encourage.
RESTORATION THEATER
Charles 2 reopened the theaters. Restoration Theater was only for the upper class. The plays and dramas show only the l ife and activit ies of the royal people. The vulgar activit ies were included in the dramas. Instead the upper class show any shame they enjoyed these plays a lot.
Women actresses were first introduced in the theater, but the dramas or plays were so much bawdy and vulgar that it was immoral to the English literature
Nell Gwynn was the f irst female actress and the mistress of Charles 2.
He was the most famous writer of the restoration period.

May 12, 1700
IMPORTANT WORKS:-Many new literary devices and
techniques like novel, biography, travelogue history
and short story was developed or practiced in this period.
Pamphlets….. Both political and literary over crowded in the
literary horizon of restoration.Poets like Dryden produced
some immortal poems indeed.
