Major initiative by A&N Administration in Shipping SectorShip repair & dry docking facilities in
A&N Islands to get a major boost
Port Blair, June 24 Sustenance of day- to- day life and almostall developmental activities in the Islandsare linked with the availability of efficientand uninterrupted shipping services.Presently, around 150 vessels, both from theGovt. and Private sectors (ranging from 20to 15000 GT) ply in the waters aroundAndaman and Nicobar Islands to maintainthe transportation requirements forpersonnel and essential goods from theMainland and between the Islands. The availability of credible Ship RepairFacilities including dry docks is essentialto ensure uninterrupted shipping services. The operating ships need these facilities to
address their day- to -day defects, satisfactory maintenance of hull, machinery, equipment onboard and also forthe periodical/ statutory surveyrequirements prescribed by the regulatorybodies. All operational ships are prescribed withmandatory requirements of dry docking, ranging from intervals of 12-36 months.Further, dry docks are also required toaddress the emergency/ break down repairsin the underwater hulls of the ship as andwhen they occur. Considering the requirements of thepresent fleet of vessels operating, theexisting ship repair and dry dock facilities
available in the Islands are inadequate, leading to frequent delays in ship repairs. The long laid up periods for the shipsleading to reduced operational availabilitycause obvious interruptions in maintenanceof essential services. The A&N Administration has taken anumber of initiatives to mitigate theproblem of inadequacy/ augment the shiprepair and dry docking facilities in theA&N Islands. The details of projects in thisregard are as follows:-a) The A&N Administration has recentlyconcluded an MoU with M/s CSL formodernization of the existing Marine
