Dr. Amy Farcas is a native of Silverado,

California in Orange County and a vet-

erinary graduate of UC Davis where she

also completed a residency in Small

Animal Clinical Nutrition followed by a

Masters degree in Nutritional Biology.

She was on the staff at the University of

Pennsylvania’s Ryan Hospital as a lec-

turer in clinical nutrition before return-

ing to California where she plans to

establish a Veterinary Nutrition

Consultation Service.

Dr. Farcas and her husband, also a

veterinarian, have recently welcomed a

new baby boy into their already busy

lives. This might prove to be a more

challenging job than that of a puppy

owner or even a nutritionist.

Catching some sleep when she can has

now joined Amy’s other hobbies of

hiking, cooking and reading.

Courthouse Dogs

Courthouse dogs are professionally trained facility dogs

that are graduates from an accredited service dog organi-

zation such as Courthouse Dogs Foundation headquar-

tered in Bellevue, Washington. Testifying in court is an

unfamiliar and stressful event for most people, especially

children. These dogs are used in a courthouse setting to

help reduce witness or victim anxiety and are available to

any witness who requests one. Most are Golden or Labra-

dor Retrievers. They are handled by criminal justice pro-

fessionals such as a deputy prosecutor, a law enforcement

officer, a victim advocate or a forensic interviewer.

Since 2003, facility dogs have provided com-

fort to abused children who must undergo

forensic interviews and testify in court.

These dogs visit juveniles in detention facili-

ties, greet jurors and lift the spirits of court-

house staff who often conduct their business

in an adversarial setting.

IN MEMORIUM

Dr. Harold Dee Ivie (1927-2015)

Dr. Harold Dee Ivie, known to his friends and colleagues as “Dan”, passed

away peacefully at the age of 88 on May 28, 2015.

Dr. Ivie was a native of Sand Springs, Oklahoma and a 1952 graduate of

Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dan served his

country in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he was stationed in the Philip-

pine Islands. His Navy service also led him to California where he eventually

chose to settle on the San Francisco peninsula. Dan began his veterinary career at the White and Morris Pet

Hospital in San Bruno where he became a partner and it became “White-Ivie Pet Hospital”. Dan eventually

became sole owner of the well-known practice from which he finally retired in 2003.

During his 50-year career, Dr. Ivie mentored many aspiring veterinarians. He also established an endowment

fund at his alma mater, OSU. Dan was a Life Member of the PVMA and served as its president in 1963.

Dan is survived by his longtime companion Patricia Richardson as well as three children and their families.

A private family service was held in Fairview, Missouri and a celebration of his life was held in Redwood

City, California.

Veterinarian Wanted

Progressive AAHA-accredited, open-door shel-

ter in the San Francisco Bay Area is seeking a

veterinarian to join our team. Duties would in-

clude providing medical care for shelter animals

(domestic, exotics and wildlife), emergency care

for stray animals, performing spay/neuter sur-

geries in our low-cost on-site and free mobile

clinic, seeing post-adoption medical appoint-

ments and assisting in humane investigations of

animal abuse. Work with a staff of 5 doctors, 3

RVTs and 10 vet assistants. Participate in staff

training, public education and special events.
