1 Introduction
The Z-Factor project officially started on October 1st, 2016, following the signature of the Grant
Agreement No 723906 with the European Commission.
The present deliverable summarized the major tasks undertaken in Project Management and
Coordination of the project as well as a summary of the deliverables, dissemination outcomes and
key meetings.
2 Summary description of project context and objectives
The aim of Z-Factor project is to link Quality management with Risk Management. In order to
achieve this, a multitude of techniques and technologies need to be combined in research and
development level. The Z-Fact0r solution comprises the introduction of five (5) multi-stage
production-based strategies targeting (i) the early detection of the defect (Z-DETECT), (ii) the
prediction of the defect generation (Z-PREDICT), (iii) the prevention of defect generation by
recalibrating the production line (multi-stage), as well as defect propagation in later stages of the
production (Z-PREVENT), (iv) the reworking/remanufacturing of the product, if this is possible,
using additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques (Z-REPAIR) and (v) the management of
the aforementioned strategies through event modelling, KPI (key performance indicators)
monitoring and real-time decision support (Z-MANAGE).
The projects advancements are expected to be:
• The development of a continuous monitoring of the condition and performance of the
multi stage manufacturing systems on component and machine level to enable sustainable
and competitive manufacturing.
• The ability to detect a number of defects on the production lines of the end Users.
• The introduction an of autonomous diagnosis capable and context-awareness system.
• The definition of the Z-Fact0r sensorial network and introduction of a novel self-
adjustment mechanism through a suitable network management module.
• The deployment of a new middleware to realise semantic interconnection of sensors with
the Z-Fact0r core elements and existing information infrastructure.
• The development of multi-parametric models of product instances (at single stage) and the
investigation of smart sampling and micro-profilometry method.
• The building of an autonomous, self-adjusted inference engine for real-time inspection and
control at the shop-floor and decision support at single stage level.
• The combination of the different strategies for production monitoring and quality control
in a multi-stage concept. The five strategies will be developed to achieve sustainable
manufacturing, based on modelling by simulating and forecasting the behaviour of
production processes and resources.
FOF-03-2016 Z-fact0r - 723906
Z-Fact0r / D10.2
• The employment of learning controllers which will adapt the behaviour to changing
environments or system degradation with >95% coverage of all cases, taking into account
constraints and considering alternatives, industrial real-time communication technologies,
system and event modelling and distributed intelligence architectures.
3 Project management during the period
3.1 Consortium management tasks and achievements

The Project Management Structure is presented below
Figure 1: Project Management Structure
The achievements of the first period (12M) are shown below:
1. The coordinator took care of the preparation and the signing of the Consortium Agreement.
The CA was based on DESCA while all partners received it on time and make comments and
additions.
2. The coordinator received on time the pre-financing from REA and was responsible for the
proper distribution among partners as is was described in the consortium plan included in the CA.
No problems were observed during this process.
3. The coordinator kept record and financial accounts in order to be able to determine at any time
what portion of the financial contribution of REA has been paid to each beneficiary.
4. The coordinator reviewed all deliverables and was responsible for the writing of the periodic
report prior to the submission to REA.
5. CERTH and Atlantis were responsible for management of all technical aspects of the project
and ensuring good progress including meeting, coordination of tasks and work flow.

Z-Fact0r / D10.2
7. The liaison with the European Commission has been carried out in an appropriate manner.
3.2 Problems which have occurred and how they were solved or envisaged
solutions
The most important challenge that the Consortium faced during the 12 months of the project was
the withdraw of one partner (See chapter 3.3).
There was no other significant problem during the M1-12 period. The Consortium partners had
frequent communication and no disputes occurred. The financial and administrative management
proceeded uneventfully.
3.3 Changes in the consortium
There is one change in the Z-Fact0r Consortium. One beneficiary (Interseals) left the project due
to major internal reorganization and change in their short-term planning of the company. A new
beneficiary (NECO) will enter the Consortium following all necessary procedures.
3.3.1 Coordinators’ Actions upon Interseals’ exit
On 25/3/2017, coordinator was informed that Interseals wanted to leave the project due to a
major internal change in upper management and multiple structural changes within the Company.
The steps that were followed are presented below:
The Coordinator:
1) together with Technical Manager had extended discussions with key members of Interseals in
order to continue as partners, however, their new CEO was unconvinced due to different agenda.
2) Approached companies of similar orientation in ZDM, to investigate their capabilities and
their interest in joining the Z-Fact0r project.
3) Created and circulated to the consortium a list of selection criteria for the potential partner.
4) Ended up with a list of 3 potential partners, created a presentation describing basic information
(location, industry type, production line) and send it out to the consortium.
Thereafter, a Project Steering Committee was set up with the participation of all the partners so
that, by the voting method, the new most suitable substitute for Interseals could be defined. The
result of the vote was NECO with vast majority of votes.
3.3.2 Grand Agreement (GA) Update
The Coordinator updated the GA in three phases
Phase 1:
✓ A document with detailed contract changes was circulated with contract changes.
✓ All Partners provided input and comments.
FOF-03-2016 Z-fact0r - 723906
Z-Fact0r / D10.2
Phase 2:
