Preterite Verbs Preterite means “past tense” Preterite verbs deal with

“completed past action” The ending tells who did the

action.

-AR Preterite EndingsJust as -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an tell you that the action takes place in the present, -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, asteis, -aron, tell you that the action took place in the past.

verbs whose infinitive ends in –car, -gar, or -zar have a spelling change, but only in the yo form.

PreteriteRemember that –er, -ir, and

-ar verbs that have a stem change in the present tense do not have a stem change in the preterite.

Preterite CERRAR (e to ie) Cierro las ventanas de mi

cuarto todas las noches. Pero ayer no cerré las

ventanas.

Preterite DORMIR (o to ue) Duermo ocho horas cada

noche. Pero ayer dormí solo 5

horas.

Preterite ENTENDER (e to ie) Yo entiendo todo en la clase

de español. Pero ayer no entendí una

cosa.
