The Police Jury met in regular ses-sion this day, with the following mem-bers present:

Messrs. J. T. St. Cyr, Doucet, Single-ton, W. P. Fontenot, Acduel Fontenot,Clopton, itailey, Lanclos.

Motion by Mr. Doucet-

That the report of committee ap-pointed to sell contract to rebuild theTaylor bridge over Bayou Courtableau,be received and accepted, committeedischarged and that warrants be issuedin favor of Messrs. Zernott and McCaf-fery, contractors as follows: Three hun-dred dollars out of the Contingent ex-pense fund; three hundred dollars outof the 4th ward internal improvementfund and four hundred dollars out ofthe general funds of 1908, making a totalpayment of one thousand dollars, as percontract.

Motion by Mr. Singleton-That the petition from Beaver, La., in

the 6th ward, praying that a committeebe appointed to straighten out the pub-lic road leading from the Olin bridge tothe Beaver school house, be receivedand accepted and granted as prayed for,and that Messrs. Abner, McDaniel, O. L.Fontenot and Dominie Viscardis be ap-pointed to make the change as per peti-tion and report at next regular meeting.Motion carried.

Clerk of this Body in issuing warrantsagainst the "general funds" of 1908, forclaims approved at last meeting, be andthe same is hereby approved by thisJury; resolved further that they beauthorized to issue warrants for all1claims approved at this meeting, whichare usu ally paid out of the contingentexpense fund, against the 'generalfunde" of 1908, and prior, in hands of theParish Treasurer.. When Uncle Sam interfered inCuban affairs and won for the Cubanstheir freedom, he had no idea, per-haps, that he was providing an ely-sium for the cullud gemmin of theUnited States whose heart bleeds forsocial equality-whose jungle eyelooks- with envy upon his superiorCaucasian brother.

The following press dispatch, how-ever, seems to tell that Uncle Samwhen he whipped the Spaniards open-ed the gates of earthly heaven to theblack man:

Havana, Jan. 3.-A strong racefeeling has been engendered by thetrouble which arose last night at theHotel Plaza, an American house, overthe refusal of the bartender to servedrinks to two negro congressmen.This resulted in a riot, which, whileno one was seriously injured made itnecessary to call out the police re-serves. Today the clerk of the hotelwas arraigned in the correctionatecourt and fined $75. An enormouscrowd of negroes, including a strongrepresentation of the Veterans As-sociation, attended the court sessionand demanded exemplary punishmenton account of the insult to the color-ed race. Senor Mureau el Gorda,president of the Senate and negroleader, conducted the prosecution andinsisted upon the extreme penalty,a fine of $1,000 and six monthsimprisonment. The decision of thecourt to inflict a minor penalty was'greeted with strong expressions ofdisapproval. After the adjournmentof court the two negro congressmenheading a procession of 400 negroesmarched to the hotel crying "VivaMaceo, Viva Le Patria."

They entered the bar and demand-ed drinks hhichwereerved witlh nofurther protest.

The incident has caused much ex-citement and there are grave fearsof a serious race clash. Many Cubansare sympathizing with the attitudeof the American hotel man-agement and tonight strong guardhas been thrown around the place.El Trausco, a government organ, pub-lished a bitter editorial declaring thatall the black and whites in Cuba areupon a plane of absolute equality andthat the American must be taught bythe srtong arm of the law that theystall not be permitted to introduceinto Cuba any anti-negro sentimentsprevailing in the United States.

Pine Prairie Notes

Pine Prairie, Jan. 4.-After wish-ing the Clarion and force a happyand prosperous New Year, I am gladto be able to say that everythingpassed off very quietly here on thateventful day. Turkey dinners,wine andgood booze were in plenty. No tigers,however; everything had to be gottenby train.

Mr. B. J. Anderson's residence isnearly finished.

Santa Claus brought several ad-ditions to famalies in this neighbor-hood: A boy to Mr. and and Mrs. N.P. Carruth; a boy to Mr. and Mrs.Jessie Campbell; a boy to Mr. andMrs. Dorsan Guillory; a girl to Mr.and Mrs. L. J. Henry.

Messrs. Ed. Bird and P. Benard, ofBaton Rouge Junction, spent a fewdays in town, the guests of Mr. H. D.Glaze.

Representative Clark went to Ope-lousas Thursday to pay his taxes,including his poll tax. He reports arush in the tax collectors oflice topay poll tax.

Deputy Sheriff M. L. Fontenotand Austin Campbell made a businesstrip to Opelousas last week.

Eli C. Clark is on the sick list, butnow better.

Mr. H. C. Clark, son of Wm. Clark,who has been to Bunkie and Lecomptespending the holidays, returned lastnight. He reports a good time.

Hen. H. L. Erlich went to Opelou-sas to attend a meeting of the School

Board, and Hon. Henry Singletonwent there for the meeting of thePolice Jury.

Mr. Johnny Richmond and family,who recently moved to Oakdale, havereturned here to reside. We areglad we have these estimable peopleback among us.
