PS-153 ALTERNATOR for OEM POWER STEERING (pump on generator)on 1955-59 CHEVROLET CARS &TRUCKS

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS EXACTLY TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE NEW ALTERNATOR UNIT.V8 engine shown. Procedure is the same for all engines. Correct lower brackets are available for all engine applications.

Disconnect the NEGATIVE cable from the battery. Leave the positive cable connected.Drain the power steering pump. The easiest way is to remove the hoses from the valve on the linkage and drain into a pan.

After draining the pump at the valve,remove the power steering hosesfrom the pump. Use a rag as shownto catch any residual fluid. Removethe pump from the generator.

Remove all the wires from thegenerator. Do not cut wires. Laywires aside.

Loosen adjusting brace hardwareand remove belt. Remove lowermounting hardware and removegenerator. Leave bracket on exhaustmanifold.

Verify the existing bracket length, itshould be about 6-5/8" measuredfrom outside to outside of themounting ears. Correct generatorbrackets are available for allengines.

Install new alternator onto bracketusing hardware provided. The shortbolt is for the front frame, the longbolt is for the rear frame. Installwashers under the bolt heads andunder the nuts, see next step too.

Install a washer between the rearframe and the bracket to achieve agood fit. Snug the hardware justenough to still allow the alternator topivot. Do not overtighten.

Install belt and adjusting brace withhardware provided. Tighten brace,tension belt as per shop manual.

Attach existing double brown wire toalternator terminal marked “DASHLAMP”. Insulate ends of remaininggenerator wires.

Remove brown wire and blue wire atvoltage regulator. Cut wires andinsulate ends, or leave uncut andinsulate terminal ends. Leave blackwire and red wire on regulator.

Install small end of new blackcharge wire to the terminal marked“BATTERY”.

Install large end of charge wire tobattery terminal post on startersolenoid, or charge wire can beconnected to the positive post of thebattery.

Charge wire can be routed alongwith existing firewall wiring harness.

Install pump onto alternator, usenew hardware provided. With lowerbolt, install one end of short groundwire.

Install other end of ground wire toengine, frame, or front sheet metal.Be sure all OEM ground straps areinstalled on vehicle. Alternator willnot charge without a ground.

Install all hoses at pump and atvalve. Use line wrenches to tightenconnections. FILL PUMP WITHFLUID! USE DEXRON III ATF OREQUIVALENT.

Connect negative battery cable.Start engine. GEN dash lamp shouldturn off after starting. Alternatordoes not need to be polarized.

READ BLEEDING INSTRUCTIONS.Check fluid level in power steeringpump, add as need.
