PLANNING, PROPER HANDLING AND PACKING AS PRECONDITIONS FOR

MINIMIZING THE RISK OF DAMAGING THE MUSEUM OBJECTS DURING THE

    TRANSPORTATION

    (ABSTRACT)

Any transfer or transportation of museum objects from one place to another, no matter if it is

in the showroom itself or the storeroom, from one building to another or from one institution to

another, is a potential risk for damage which may be of mechanical, biological or chemical nature.

The reasons for moving museum objects are different: transportation to the laboratory for

conservation treatment, transfer from the exhibition space in the storeroom and vice versa or to

some other institution for exhibition or for scientific research. In all these cases museum objects are

additionally exposed at risk of potential damages that, according to previous planning, can be

identified in advance or, at least, reduced to minimum.

Including and taking into account all changes in the external environment and specific needs of

each individual object is a very complex process that can be greatly facilitated if appropriate and

more or less standardized procedures are followed. Any missed step in this process can be

disastrous in terms of endangering the integrity and value of museum objects or increase the level of

    its potential damage.

These procedures in the form of a manual can be used in carrying out preparations for the

realization of specific research projects or exhibitions, but also for future planning and, which is of

particular importance, for dealing with emergencies (natural and other disasters), when the transfer

of museum objects urgent and necessary.

Depending on the nature of material, importance, sensitivity of the objects and other characteristics,

this manual can contain some more categories, but it usually refers to the planning steps for

handling, packaging and transportation of the objects, including commercial transportation services,

insurance, security and coordination of the involved staff.

All the steps that should be taken in the preparation and realization of exhibitions in order to fully

eliminate or reduce the risk of possible damage to a minimum, will be more extensively exposed

and elaborated in this paper on the example of the latest international exhibition at which our

institutions borrowed a large number of objects from different materials and executed in several

    techniques.

Keywords: planning, risk, damage, transportation, museum object.
