Program Notes
Echo⋅Poem⋅Imageisatheatricalcompositionforsixmusicians(flute,clarinet,violin,cello,pianoandpercussion),threedancersandvisualeffects.IdeasfromtraditionalChineseartsprovideanovelcontextovertheapproximately35minutesofthework. Thecompositioncombinesauralandvisualexperiencethroughmusic,dance,andvisualeffects.Image.Poem.Echoconsistsoffivemovements,eachofwhichdeploysvariedcombinationsofinstrumentation,dance,textandimages.MusicalmaterialsdrawnfromtraditionalChinesefolksongsareincorporatedintoacollage/montagearrangement.
Thefirstmovement,Silhouetteexplorestimbrefusionandmicro‐variationofmelodyandrhythm.NostalgiaisinspiredbyaChinesepoem.Thismovementdepictsalonelysoulandadesolateatmosphere.Chinesecalligraphyandcomputer‐generatedimagesareprojectedonalargescreenonstagealongsidethemusic.

Thethirdmovement,OperaticRhapsody,employsthemusicalmaterialsfromBeiJingOperawithrhapsodicdevelopment.LoveSongisalyricalmovement.InChineseruralareas,antiphonalsingingisacustomforyoungwomenandmenexpressingtheiradmirationtoeachother.Theviolinistplaysatthechoralterraceandthecellistplaysonthestage,facingeachother.Onefemaledancerandonemaledancerstartdancingfromthetwosidesofthestage,movingtowardeachotherandmeetingatthecenterofthestage.Thelastmovement,Carnival,featurestheentireensemble.Towardstheendofthismovement,themusicalmaterialsfromthepreviousmovementsarejuxtaposedandcombinedvertically,producingaplayfulfantasy.Suddenshiftsofdifferenttempi,dynamics,andgesturesconcludetheworkwithakaleidoscopicmontage.

Stage Setup and Performance Notes
I. Silhouette Flute, Clarinet, Violin, Cello, Vibraphone and Piano (stage lights off, each player uses individual stand light) Optional with two dancers dance behind a large paper/fabric screen, with lights projecting behind the dancers, in order to produce the silhouettes of the dancers on the screen.
