How to Take a Rubbing

Taking A Rubbing

• White paper with black wax block (or large crayon) best choice

• Thick paper like grocery sacks are too thick to get a proper rub

• Butcher paper with wax side works well with moist stones

• Please avoid using pencil, chalk or anything that could rub off

Lay your paper over the entire memorial.

Begin by marking all four edges.

Rub every area where a design or text appears.

Indicate on the rubbing which areas are polished (P) and which areas are sanded (S).

For shape-carved designs, we need a rubbing and a good

close-up photograph of design to be shaped.

If you can imagine it, we can create it in stone.
