DEAR VALUEDOHA SUPPORTER,
From expanding the support we provide to our Smiles Across America® (SAA) partners to launching innovative resources for older adults through the Wisdom Tooth Project® (WTP), Oral Health America spent 2013 spreading smiles across generations. We understand the importance of oral health to Americans of all ages—a healthy smile allows children to focus at school and supports the overall health and independence of older adults—which is why we dedicated our efforts to reaching more Americans than ever before with needed oral health care and education. To support the continued expansion and impact of our programs, we expanded our staff, adding program managers for SAA and WTP for the first time and increasing our internship and fellowship opportunities.
None of this would be possible without your generous support. We’re proud that so many of you are long-term donors who have supported our cause for five, 10, 15 years or more. That legacy of support reaffirms that the work we do makes a difference. We’re proud to welcome new supporters as well, from new relationships with oral health organizations to new SAA partners to those who generously donated for the first time. Together, we can continue to connect communities with resources for access to care and education and work for policies that ensure every generation has the tools it needs to have a healthy mouth.
Most sincere thanks,
Peggy Cottrell, Board Chair
THANKYOU
ACR0SSAMERICASmiles Across America
Smiles Across America® (SAA) serves the youngest generation, providing oral healthcare and education to vulnerable children in school-based and school-linked settings. In addition to expanding to Tampa, FL, OHA engaged its current SAA partners by hosting two Share and Learn conferences where partners gathered to learn from each other and listen to expert speakers. Fifteen organizations joined OHA in St. Paul thanks to the generous support of DENTSPLY International, 3M ESPE and Patterson Dental. Working with the Center for Oral Health, Southern California organizations met at Western University in Pomona thanks to support from the Annenberg Foundation’s GRoW initiative.

“Oral Health America has been a valued partner in our school-based sealant program for a number of years, particularly at times when the future of the program has been uncertain. More recently, OHA’s support allowed us to expand our sealant program.”
Dr. Daniel JonesProfessor and Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences, Texas A&M
University Health Science Center, Baylor College of Dentistry
In total, SAA reached more than 440,000 children through 193 programs in 43 states in 2013 and distributed more than 500,000 units of donated dental product, including sealants, fluoride varnish, toothbrushes and toothpaste.
WISDOM PROJECTWisdom Tooth Project
4
The Wisdom Tooth Project® (WTP) addresses the dire situation facing older Americans when it comes to oral health. According to our 2013 Nielsen-Harris Interactive survey, almost half of low-income older adults have not been to the dentist in the past two years. Through WTP, OHA aims to educate older adults and caregivers about the importance of oral health as they age and connect them with resources that increase access to care.
OHA launched two landmark resources in 2013—toothwisdom.org and A State of Decay. Toothwisdom.org is a first-of-its-kind online tool that connects older adults and caregivers to dental care where they live and educates them about the importance of oral health. The site also includes expert content for health professionals about the unique oral health needs of older adults.
“My dental procedures have been very costly and I had to contact a social worker to help me understand my bills. Toothwisdom.org can help me find a community health center so I can finally get an affordable check-up and stay up-to-date on oral health information.”
Patricia CosgroveClient of The Carter Burden Center for the Aging, Inc.
A State of Decay revealed that more than half the country received a “fair” or “poor” assessment when it comes to minimal standards affecting dental care access for older adults. The report, available on toothwisdom.org, received national media attention and led many state oral health organizations to establish new relationships with OHA. This is the beginning of a new conversation about the importance of prevention at every age and the changes that need to be made so all Americans can have a healthy mouth.
COMMUNICATION
EQUITYCampaign for Oral Health Equity
Through the Campaign for Oral Health Equity, OHA engages the public through communications and advocacy, encouraging Americans to speak up and prioritize mouth health along with other serious chronic health conditions.
5
The Campaign for Oral Health Equity also includes NSTEP® (National Spit Tobacco Education Program) which aims to prevent all people, especially young people, from using spit tobacco and to help all users quit. During the 12th annual slogan contest, NSTEP and Little League® Baseball asked players to submit slogans describing the dangers of spit tobacco. Winner Glen Huggins, penned the slogan, “Be a home run hitter, not a ballpark spitter,” and received an all-expense paid trip to the 2013 Little League Baseball World Series.
“I’m from a small town of about 300 people, and when I was in high school, I chewed tobacco for a little while,” said Glen’s father Ben Huggins. “I wanted to make sure my son didn’t go down the same bad path.”
NSTEP®
The annual Fall for Smiles campaign educates all generations about maintaining a healthy mouth through daily brushing and flossing, regular dental visits, eating a healthy diet and avoiding tobacco products. Fall for Smiles reached 120 million Americans and featured new materials for families and dental professionals. Dental offices nationwide participated by offering free days of care and educating communities about the importance of oral health.
To launch the 2013 campaign, OHA hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill entitled, “A State of Decay: Coming of Age Without Oral Healthcare,” that gathered oral health leaders and government representatives to discuss the issues facing older
adults and oral health. Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) was recognized during the briefing for his work in addressing oral health disparities.

COMMUNICATION
EQUITY
GIVING
COLLABORATIONPartnership for HealthyMouths, Healthy Lives
6
OHA participates in the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives, which celebrated a successful second year of the Ad Council’s Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign. In 2013, the campaign received more than $33 million in free ad space and time and more parents reported that their child brushes their teeth at least twice a day (55 percent, up from 48 percent in 2012). The campaign continues to be among the Ad Council’s most successful and OHA is proud to be a part of its foundation and growth.
Planned Giving
Making a planned gift is another important way to support OHA and extend our work. Planned gifts also impact the next generation of dental professionals-- the Beazley Summer Internship Program was made possible because of a planned gift by the late Bernard and Kathleen Beazley.
From making a charitable bequest in your will to designating OHA as the beneficiary of a retirement plan, there are many options available. Please visit oralhealthamerica.org or call Director of Development Brad McLaughlin at (312) 836-9900 to learn more.
Giving BackOHA depends on the generosity of individuals, foundations and corporations to support the important work we do. The annual Gala & Benefit is one of many opportunities to contribute and serves as a valuable opportunity to network with dental industry leaders. The 23rd Gala & Benefit, held at Chicago’s Navy Pier, raised more than $550,000, breaking all previous records.
Immediately preceding the gala, OHA recognized Donald “Mac” McKenzie with the Gala Tribute Award. Mac’s involvement with NSTEP® (National Spit Tobacco Education Program) fundamentally changed the way the country’s children view the dangers of smokeless tobacco.
OPPORTUNITYInternships and Fellowships
7
To educate the next generation of dental professionals, OHA offers paid fellowships and internships that feature extensive on-the-job experiences. The one-year fellowship allows a college graduate interested in pursuing a dentistry degree or a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene to make significant contributions and develop leadership skills in communications, research, strategic planning and financial management.
“I realize now that entering dental school with no public health experience
would have been a mistake. This fellowship has provided me with invaluable
knowledge of public health dentistry and has fueled my desire to provide care
for vulnerable populations. This unique experience has allowed me to work
alongside amazing people whose dedication to this issue is contagious.”
Bailey Moorhead
2013-2014 OHA Fellow, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine,
Class of 2018
The Bernard and Kathleen Beazley Summer Internship Program provides a 12-week paid experience for rising college seniors pursuing dental school or a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene. In addition, 2013 saw the first Smiles Across America® (SAA) and advocacy interns, who provided support and research that directly impacted product donations, partnerships and advocacy efforts.
“The Beazley Internship introduced me to the larger scope of dentistry beyond
the dental chair and equipped me with the tools and knowledge to continue
making my impression in healthcare. It felt great to know that I was fulfilling
OHA’s mission as well as my own personal goal to connect vulnerable people
to the care they need.”Jessica Williams
