Overview:This educational activity has been designed to provide a review of current medical and surgical treatment options for patients with oral and maxillofacial surgical needs. Faculty are comprised of experts who will present the latest developments as well as review essential material that will enable attendees to implement changes in their practice that will improve the quality of patient care. Content will include updates on medicine and anesthesia, pathology and trauma, reconstruction and implants and cosmetic facial surgery. Time will be allotted for discussion and a course syllabus with lecture PDFs will provide reference materials for future reference.

Target Audience:This educational activity is designed for oral and maxillofacial surgeons and residents, general dentists, otolaryngologists, and plastic and reconstructive surgeons. The content provides an update and review of essential elements encompassing their practice.

Needs Assessment:A comprehensive review of oral and maxillofacial surgery is needed to gain information on the latest developments and treatment options which can then be incorporated into practice patterns. Dentists and surgeons are required to expand their knowledge and update care algorithms in a rapidly changing environment.

Practice Gaps:Advances in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery present a challenge to the practicing dentist, surgeon and resident. Incorporating evidence-based treatment options that will enhance patient outcomes is required to keep abreast of trends and establish algorithms for care. There is a need to update diagnostic and treatment methods and interpret them effectively, fine tune and expand appropriately.

Objectives:Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:

1. Implement a systems-based approach to obtaining a medical history, performing a physical examination and conducting a pre-operative assessment.

2. Discuss new advancements in the field of anesthesia, specific to patient age, type of anesthetic and potential complications.

3. Describe dentoalveolar and implant surgery, focusing on complications and management, impacted teeth, prosthodontic considerations and principles of osseointegration.

4. Explain patient assessment, orthodontic considerations, surgical procedures and complications and management in orthognathic surgery.

4. Discuss reconstructive surgery for cleft lip and palate, craniofacial surgery, TMJ surgery and cosmetic facial surgery, including preplanning, postoperative management and complications.

5. Review pathology of benign and malignant lesions, odontogenic cysts and tumors, oral cancer and head and neck malignancy.

6. Compare treatment plans specific to management of the mandible, craniofacial and midface trauma.

7. Describe principles of treatment for infections and BRONJ.
