OPEN GLOVING

GLOVEone of the most

commonly used barrier for the spread of infection

it is made of latex rubber

use for protecting the client as well as the health care providers in transmitting microorganisms

cannot be reused again especially when contaminated

PURPOSESto enable the nurse to handle or touch sterile objects freely without contaminating them

to protect the hands especially when handling any body substance

PURPOSES

to reduce the likelihood of nurses transmitting their own endogenous microorganisms to individuals receiving care

to reduce the chance that the nurse’s hands will transmit microorganism from one clients to another

METHODS FOR APPLYING STERILE GLOVES1. OPEN METHODS is used most frequently outside O.R. when performing procedures that

require the sterile technique (changing dressing)

PRIMARY REASONS FOR WASHING HANDS EACH TIME GLOVES ARE REMOVED

the gloves may have imperfection or be damaged during wearing

the hands may become contaminated during glove removal

STEPS IN OPEN GLOVING

ASSESSMENT:

Assess the glove package. Assess the local environment. Assess the correct size for proper

fit.

STEPS IN OPEN GLOVINGPLANNING/ EXPECTED

OUTCOMES: Sterility of the gloves will

be maintained while they are being applied.

Sterility of the procedure will be maintained.

STEPS IN OPEN GLOVING

IMPLEMENTATION:

1. Cleanse hands.2. Remove the outer wrapper

from the package; Place the inner wrapper onto a clean dry surface. Open inner wrapper to expose gloves.

3. Identify right and left; Glove the dominant hand first.

STEPS IN OPEN GLOVINGIMPLEMENTATION:

4. Grasp the 2 inch (5 cm) wide cuff with the thumb and the first two fingers of the non dominant hand, touching only the inside of the cuff.

5. Gently pull the glove over the dominant hand making sure the thumb and fingers fit into the proper spaces of the gloves.

STEPS IN OPEN GLOVINGIMPLEMENTATION:

6. With the gloved dominant hand, slip your fingers under the cuff of the other glove, gloved thumb abducted, making sure it does not touch any part on your non-dominant hand.

7. Gently slip the glove on to your non dominant hand, making sure the fingers slip into the proper spaces.

8. With gloved hands, interlock fingers to fit the gloves onto each fingers.

STEPS IN OPEN GLOVING IMPLEMENTATION: REMOVING GLOVES:

9. Slip gloved fingers of the dominant hand under the cuff of the opposite hand or grasp the outer part of the glove at the wrist if there is no cuff.

10. Pull the glove down to the fingers, exposing the thumb.

11. Slip the uncovered thumb into the opposite glove at the wrist. Allowing only the glove covered fingers of the hand to touch the soiled glove.

12. Pull the glove over the dominant hand almost to the fingertips and slip the glove onto the other hand.

13. Pull the glove over the dominant hand so that only the inside is exposed.

14. Dispose of soiled gloves according to institutional policy. Cleanse hands properly.
