DECADEA decade is a period of ten years. The word is derived (via French) from the Ancient Greek dekas which means ten.

era A long and distinct period of history with a particular feature or characteristic

Sculptured and polished was what women aimed for. Eyebrows were defined, thin and perfectly shaped, extended down to the temple particularly in the 30’s. Smokey, sultry and sexy kohl eyes were lined both inside and out, adding a touch of mystery to the female shape.

show off the face rather than hiding it away.

Lips had the ‘bee-sting’ look with the cupids bow and Chinese red or orange being the ultimate colour worn. Hair was kept short and cropped with accessories simple, delicate and refined. Items such as the cloche hat were popular through both the 20’s and 30’s.

Onscreen Hollywood idols such as Katherine Hepburn and Veronica Lake inspired women in how to look. With exaggerated cupids bows and manicured arched eyebrows the 40’s women were natural beauties with little support. Strong working women with off the face, straight-laced hair during the day, were subtly replaced with soft curls in the evening, charming and encapsulating. Reds and oranges with a delicate gloss brings a dash of life portraying a more present, fresh style. Exaggerating the eyebrows right down the face again gives it a modern feel yet still capturing the spirit of the 1940’s woman.

1950’s

With the introduction of ‘pan cake’, the first foundation by MaxFactor, women yearned for the allure and exquisiteness of the Hollywood lifestyle. With idols such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn to aspire to, it is no surprise this decade was all about looking flawless. Women’s aspiration of this decade was to be the domestic goddess. Perfectly styled hairwith a full face of makeup dominated this era.

With innovative and flamboyant hairstyles, plastic rollers were a popular choice to achieve the desired look. Makeup was thick and unblemished. The shaped eyebrows, the ‘cat’s eye’ flick of eyeliner and plump, luscious red lipsticks were a must. Women were striking to look at and oozed femininity. Dita Von Teese is today’s ultimate, contemporary 1950’s goddess.

The 1960’s was an era of creative explosion. With geometric shapes and Egyptian style eyeliner, make up really reflected the wild side of this decade. With inspirational icons from the likes of Twiggy, Brigitte Bardot and Edie Sedg-wick, the desirable look was one of everlasting youthfulness and purity. With fashions and lifestyles influenced by youth movements, it was now about developing individual styles rather than following the norm. Dark eyes with extra-long false lashes and nude, pale lips were paired with hair in a variety of different lengths. For those fortunate to have long hair, the bigger the better was the way and the beehive was ‘the’ style of the era.

Women were natural, tanned and athletic. Long, luscious hair was straightened using actual irons complimented by soft subtle makeup during the day. Evening brought about an aesthetic style of sexualised glamour, that was heavily noticeable on the disco scene, looking attractive and being noticed in clubs. The Black Arts Movement in the 60’s profoundly influenced the 70’s and black power and pride inspired the afro hairstyle among many African-American women.

With new found freedom and the heavy inspiration of the disco and hippie flair, cosmetics and colourings could be of your choice. Keeping it natural and fresh and vamping it up in the evening. Contrasting to previous eras, beauty came in all shapes and forms, there were no set styles.

Leaving the natural beauty of the 70’s behind, icons including Grace Jones and Madonna brought jewel tones of turquoise, electric blue and fuchsia pink to the forefront of fashion. Teaming big bow accessories, crimped hair and exaggerated coverage, this structured yet wild style was a ‘must have’ of the decade. These beautiful and colourful styles have captured the essence of the 80’s with a twist of contemporary fashion, incorporating current trends of the 21st century.
