Short Biosketch
Dr. Kaplan is a tenured Associate Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the
University of Calgary. Dr. Kaplan is a gastroenterologist and epidemiologist who has devoted his
clinical and research career to study the cause of gastrointestinal diseases, such as the
inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and improving the care of patients living with these
conditions. He graduated with a Masters of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public
Health and completed an IBD Fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the
Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary in 2007 as a clinician-scientist with 80%
protected time for research. He was a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) New
Investigator (2009-2014) and is an Alberta-Innovates Health-Solutions Population Health
Investigator (2010-2017). He is a member of the executive committee in the O’Brien Institute for
Public Health at the University of Calgary and the Scientific and Medical Advisory Committee
of Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. Dr. Kaplan was selected into the inaugural class of the AGA
Future Leaders Program. Dr. Kaplan has over 130 publications, with an H-index of 34 and over
4500 citations (source: Google Scholar). Dr. Kaplan’s study on the global epidemiology of IBD
(PMID: 22001864) is the most cited paper in Gastroenterology over the past 5 years with over
700 citations and a Field-Weighted Citation impact of 73.7 (source: Scopus). In the past 5 years
Dr. Kaplan has received nearly $6 million (total of 5 grants) from operating grants as the
principal investigator (PI) or co-PI, as well as over $16 million (total of 11 grants) as a co-
investigator. He is the PI on 3 successive operating grants from CIHR with uninterrupted funding
from 2008 to 2017. Dr. Kaplan distinctions include Avenue Magazine’s Calgary Top 40 Under
40 (2011), the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology Young Investigator Award (2013), and
the Killam Emerging Research Leader Award (2013). The overarching themes of his research
program are to study the environmental determinants (e.g. pollutants) that are associated with
gastrointestinal disorders and to improve the delivery of care to patients suffering from
gastrointestinal disease, such as IBD, through health service and population health research.
Dr. Kaplan’s research has been highlighted in international media:
