Good News

“The only person we can change is ourselves”

“Any change that we make – in how we respond to someone, our tone of

voice, the words we use, and our body language – encourages the other

person to change as well.”

Self Awareness• Self-awareness gives us important knowledge

about how our own reactions influence our relationship with others.

• Careful observations gives us important information about the unique strengths and needs of others.

• Flexible response helps us use this information about ourselves and others to identify next steps.

Giving and Receiving Information

Our attitudes, beliefs, and valuesInfluences our relationships in important ways

Based on personal histories and experiences, interpretation of messages maybe different than you intended and vise versa.

Lets talk if responses are a puzzle.

Assessing Needs and Resources for CSHCN in NH 2004

Provider Training

• Limited number of respite providers are available and the need is great.

• Respite providers who know and understand specific expectations before they begin will be more likely to commit to staying

• “Experience has shown that even limited training for providers can greatly improve the quality of care for an individual with special needs”
