SESSION 5 OF THE ALCTS SERIES: FROM MARC TO BIBFRAME

WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 9 TH 2016 AT 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET

11/09/2016 Hosted by ALCTS, Association for Library Collections and Technical Services 2

Spoiler Alert!

11/09/2016 Hosted by ALCTS, Association for Library Collections and Technical Services 3

BIBFRAME’s ability to accommodate serials is still unresolved...

11/09/2016 Hosted by ALCTS, Association for Library Collections and Technical Services 4

HOWEVER, many experts on serials cataloging are experimenting with Linked Data and figuring out how to serials should be modelled and encoded in BIBFRAME.

Overview

1. Ongoing efforts to map serials to BIBFRAME

2. Issues that serials catalogers encounter using the BIBFRAME model and vocabulary

3. Possible conceptual models for MARC to BIBRAME serials conversion

4. Tools for cataloging serials in a BIBFRAME environment

5. Examples of serials in BIBFRAME

6. How to get involved

PCC BIBFRAME Task Group

1. Subgroups include: 1. CSR Mapping Group

2. BSR Mapping Group

2. CSR Group is mapping CSR TO BIBFRAME

3. For more information, see: https://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/taskgroup/task-groups.html

Zepheira’s Training Alumni Serials Team

1. Started by participants in Zepheira’s Linked Data training

2. Led by Tina Shrader (NLM) and Xiaoli Li (UC Davis)

3. Informal, open group. Anyone can join.

4. Met bi-weekly, transitioning to monthly meetings

5. Compared PRESS-OO, BIBFRAME 1.0 and Bibframe Lite

6. Transforms example sets of records into Linked Data, analyses results

7. Provides feedback on vocabulary and transformation rules

1. Enumeration & Chronology

2. Interoperability

3. Changing information, including title, frequency, enumeration, place of publication, publisher, and frequency

Enumeration & chronology

Enumeration & chronology may appear in the following two title fields:

◦ 246 $f - Dates or volume and issue numbers that relate the variant title to the record when a

note is generated from the field

◦ 247 $f - Dates or volume and issue numbers that relate the former variant title to the record

Enumeration & chronology: MARC 246 (title) to BF

◦ 310 $b - Used when the date is different from the beginning date of the publication and a former publication frequency is given in field 321

◦ 321 $b -Dates of former publication frequency

◦ 362 $a - Sequential designation may consist of volume number, edition number, issue number, series of volume numbers, or other sequential designations

◦ 515 $a - Numbering peculiarities note: irregularities or peculiarities in numbering or in publishing pattern

◦ 588 $a - Source of description Note

How to get involved

How to Get Involved

1. Start a local study group a la UCLA 1. Experiment with LC’s BIBFRAME Editor and transformation tool. Play with Scribe.

2. Create a local interest group that supports experimentation connected to your library’s goals and priorities

3. Create, join, or communicate with a learning group with people from other institutions

4. Join the Zepheira Training Alumni Serials Team 1. Contact Xiaoli Li, Tina Shrader, or Gloria Gonzalez for questions

2. Request an account at accounts.zepheira.com/request and mention “interested in joining Serials Team” in the “Reason” field
