CHANGE THE WORLD EVENT
You've been hearing Kirk and Sara
preach on "Change the World." You've studied the book in small groups. You've participated in mission opportunities. Now come and worship God by hearing a sermon delivered by the author of the book, Mike Slaughter! On Monday, May 20, at 7pm, join our Winchester District laity and clergy in an inspiring worship service which will move us out into the world. Bring a friend, neighbor, family member or coworker to this time of worship to hear from a speaker whose vision of the church is to BE THE CHURCH by doing!
Perhaps you still have a question about the book or are journeying
through discovering more about missions. You're in luck! Mike Slaughter will be with our Winchester District clergy and laity on Tuesday, May 21, from 9:30-3pm at Riverton UMC in Front Royal. Come to enjoy a time of dialogue, answering tough questions and continuing to learn a missional model of being the church. Registration is needed for Tuesday's events. More information for both events is available in the front office!
May Worship Schedule:

Missions and Outreach
Thank You Letters
Did you know we are one of the supporting congregations for Faith in
Action and they need our help? Faith in Action is a non-profit coalition
of volunteers from the faith-based communities, businesses, and civic-
service organizations who work together to provide transportation to
critical healthcare appointments for chronically ill, frail, or elderly
persons having no other means of transportation.
Their goal is to provide a FREE, reliable transport system to help
friends and neighbors obtain medical treatment. Volunteers work
together with community agencies and healthcare providers to relieve
the burden of arranging transportation throughout the course of
treatment.
How you can help:
1. Volunteer - Choose how much time and what services you
would like to provide.
2. Refer elderly or chronically ill Winchester-Frederick-Clarke
County residents and their families to Faith in Action.
3. Make a donation. Faith in Action is a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization.

ESSENTIAL METHODIST DOCTRINES
Q. How is the Holy Spirit presently at work? A. Through our hymnody, we express the meaning of the Christian life under the heading of the Holy Spirit, affirming this present activity of the Holy Spirit. Q. Is salvation exclusively the work of the Holy Spirit? A. Salvation is the work of all of the Persons of the Trinity. Q. What special emphasis have Methodists expressed in their worship of the Trinity? A. Methodists have historically emphasized the intensely personal nature of God. Q. Are God’s love and power contradictory? A. Our emphasis on the love and compassion that God has for all does not contradict our belief in God’s power. Q. How does our worship express our belief in this Trinitarian God? A. Our teaching about God grows out of our worship where we name the true subject of our adoration: “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.”
A “Catechism” for United Methodists based on Ted A. Campbell’s Methodist Doctrine: The Essentials – revised edition

Health Notes by Debra Miles, RN, FCN
For Important Health Benefits
Adults need at least:
2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate intensity aerobic activity (i.e.,
brisk walking) every week and
muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major
muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms).
1 hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes) of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (i.e., jogging
or running) every week and
muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle
groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms).
An equivalent mix of moderate and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity and
muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major
muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms).
How much physical activity do adults need?
Physical activity is anything that gets your body moving. According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guide-
lines for Americans, you need to do two types of physical activity each week to improve your health-
aerobic and muscle-strengthening.

Stop Hunger Now Mission Celebration! We had a great day on April 21 packaging dehydrated meals
so that children will have a meal to eat for the day. During
our hunger education training, we learned that the meals will
be given to children while in school, as a way to encourage
their families to send them to school to learn instead of going
out to work in the fields. Our 17,500 meals will combine with
others packaged already and head to a developing country in
the world. We'll find out in about a month where they're go-
ing! Thanks for all of those who donated funds and who came out to serve
all of God's children!

One Little Light
One little light to remember a mother
a father, a son, a cousin, a brother.
One little light to honor a friend
who’s fighting the fight to live again.
One little light to find ways to cope
to lift up our heads, and hang on to hope.
One little light shines from above
by lighting this light, you acknowledge love.

For a donation of $5.00 to the American Cancer Society, one little light will shine in your
behalf during the event night at James Wood High School.
Sponsored by the Braddock Street Angels
Braddock Street United Methodist Church Members,
The Relay For Life event for the Winchester and Frederick Co. area will be
held Friday, June 14, 2013, at James Wood High School. You have a team,
the Braddock Street Angels, participating in the event.
We are in the midst of raising money for this year’s Relay For Life event.
Individually we are asking friends, family members and co-workers to
consider making a donation to our team unless they have already committed
their support to another team or individual.
To make a donation, write a check made out to American Cancer Society and mail it to the
church address or visit the Relay For Life website, www.relayforlife.org, and enter our team
name (Braddock Street Angels) to make your donation.
Another way to help us raise money for this event is by purchasing luminary bags, either in memory of loved
ones who have lost their battle with cancer or in honor of loved ones who have survived cancer. Each bag
sells for $5 and please note “in memory” or “in honor” beside each name you are remembering. Mail your
list and check made out to American Cancer Society to the church address.
Thank you so much for considering this request.

MUSICAL WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT BSUMC THIS SUMMER
Reverend Dr. Dan Garrett to Present Worship - "The Theology of Worship" will be presented on Monday, July 8, at
2:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Winchester, as part of the American Guild of Organists Convention. Dan
Garrett is a retired clergy member of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He is a graduate of the Uni-
versity of Virginia, Yale Divinity School and Wesley Theological Seminary. In forty-five years of ministry he served six
pastoral appointments and taught United Methodist Studies at Union Presbyterian Seminary, Virginia Union University
School of Theology, Eastern Mennonite Seminary and Shenandoah University. He has a special interest in sacramental the-
ology and sings in the sanctuary choir at BSUMC.
St. Paul's K Street Choirs will present a concert at BSUMC on Monday, July 8, at 3:30 p.m. Widely acclaimed as among
America's finest choral ensembles in the Anglican tradition, the choirs of St. Paul's K Street are known for superb musicality
in an Anglo-Catholic liturgical context. The choirs sing three services each Sunday, year-round, including Evensong each
week. The Parish Choir is widely acclaimed, both paid and volunteer members. The choirs have toured frequently and are
known for six successful recordings on the Pro Organo label. For further info: www.stpauls-kst.com
Julia Vidrick Evans - An active recitalist and prize-winning organist will present a recital at BSUMC, Tuesday, July 9, at
1:30 p.m. Ms. Evans performed at the 2010 AGO National Convention. The Washington Post described her performance as
"giving meaningful tonal and emotional character to each movement of music."
Jeremy Filsell - An artist in Residence at the National Cathedral will play the closing festival worship service for the
American Guild of Organists Convention at BSUMC. The service on Wednesday, July 10, at 10:30 a.m. will include com-
missioned works by four composers: Dr. James Laster, Dr. Will Averitt, Dr. Owen Burdick, and Dr. Georgann Toole.
The service will be led by a select choir made up of singers in the Winchester area. With 200 church musicians in the audi-
ence, the singing will be unbelievably exciting.
The public is invited to attend ALL events in the convention schedule. A suggested offering of $10.00 will be received at the
door. For more information about the convention, go to www.2013agoreg3convention.com.
CHOIR RECOGNITION SUNDAY On "Mother's Day," May 12, we will recognize all those persons involved in music ministry at all worship services.
8:30 - New Voices Choir, Bel Canto Ensemble
9:45 - Amazing Love Praise Band
11:00 - Sanctuary Choir, Children's Choir, Sonshine Singers, Joyful Ringers
At the11:00 worship service, the Children's Choir will present "Are We There Yet," a delightful musical by Allen Pote and
Tom Long, retelling the Exodus story of Moses, Aaron and the people of Israel. This work is full of meaningful content and
also contains lighthearted entertainment. Like so many accounts in the Bible, at the heart of a great spiritual event, we find
some people a lot like ourselves.
