During antenatal period, fetal tissue draws nutrition from mother through placenta-hence maternal health affects fetal health

Maternal malnutrition/ ill health causes stillbirths, premature , low birth weight infants

Diseases like typhoid,syphlis,AIDS ,german measles pass from mother to child

Postpartum infant depends on mothers milkPsychological bond between mother & child

SOCIAL OBSTETRICS AND SOCIAL PEDIATRICS IN

PRIMARY HEALTH CARE

• Social obstetrics considers, age at marriage, child spacing, fertility, education, customs and beliefs in pregnancy, upbringing of child in family, deliveries by trained birth attendants

• Social pediatrics aims growth monitoring of infants /children, nutritional surveillance, breast feeding promotion, regular health check ups of infants

Mother and child health programs have to

be dealt SIMULTANEOUSLY

MCH aims at reducing maternal and infant mortality as well as morbidity

MALNUTRITION is common problem of both mothers and children – addressed by MCH

MATERNAL INFECTIONS at any stage can cause fetal and neonatal infections

Tetanus neonatorum,TB, diphtheria, hepatitis need to be checked

EDUCATION OF WOMEN / MOTHERS

ORS & diarrhea prevention program. Diarrhea major cause of infant deaths, morbidity & malnutrition, hence education in personal hygiene and child care

MCH refers to comprehensive medical care comprising promotive, preventive ,curative and rehabilitative services for mothers and children including family health planning

AIMS OF MCH urban, rural ,socioeconomic factors

• EVERY PREGNANCY IS A WANTED PREGNANCY, needs to COMPLETE full term & DELIVER healthy baby

• ALL PREGNANT WOMEN AND CHILDREN MUST RECEIVE full medical care

• ALL WOMEN AND CHILDREN MUST REACH health centers for routine and emergency care

• REDUCE MORTALITY maternal and infant• PROMOTION of reproductive health/

education
