Principle
Shaping can happen when the first
desired response is reinforced. Stop
reinforcing that level of behaviour and
only reinforce when the final goal
response is achieved.
Shaping can happen (reading behavior) when the first desired response(Alphabets Syllables Spell Read) is reinforced (gives chocolate as reward). Stop reinforcing that level of behaviour (Alphabets Syllables Spell) and only reinforce (gives chocolate as reward) when the final goal response (able to read a sentence in one hour) is achieved.

ProceduresStep 1: Induction: Teaching Part -Teach the child
alphabets in 5 minutes. The whole class then will follow
the teacher to sing the ABC song.
Step 2: Students will be asked to view the slides and
answer the questions in 10 minutes. Each time the child
recognized the alphabets, he will be
Rewarded with chocolate. Stop giving
chocolate when he recognizes them.
Step 3: Teach him to spell syllables in 10 minutes.
When the child could spell syllables, he will be
rewarded with chocolate. Stop giving chocolate
after he is able to spell by syllables.
Step 4: Introduce to him new words.
Each time he is able to spell the words,
he will be rewarded with chocolate.
Step 5: He will only be rewarded
when he is able to read a sentence within 35
minutes.

Reflections• The motive of the shaper is
very different from that of the person whose behaviour is being shaped. The shaper seeks to shape or change another’s behaviour/skill (reading) while the person whose behaviour is being shaped is to gain a reward (chocolates) or to avoid unwanted consequences (punishment).
• This one-hour application might enable the Primary One school children to read only a few sentences (even not half a page).
• The students are eager to participate in the class since there is reward to be given and at the same time achieve the lesson plan’s objective.
• The students are able to read at least a few sentences.
Reflections
• Observational Learning – Children must pay attention to the model, store information about the model’s behaviour in memory and must be motivated to perform the behaviour on her or his own.
• To enable the Primary One special education school children to read more than a sentence, this one-hour application steps should be added according to the duration aimed by their teachers.
