Introduction:
a. Greet pupils.b. Pupils reply.
Set Induction:
a. Show picture of Nat, the rat. (Appendix 1)b. Pupils talk about the picture with guidance.c. Tell the story of Nat using pictures.

Step 1:
a. Introduce the phoneme /n/ by showing an action. b. Instruct pupils to: Touch the tip of your nose and
say /n/.c. Demonstrate how to sound it out: • When you say /n/, the tip of your tongue goes
behind your top teeth and your tongue does not move.
d. Get pupils to do the action and sound /n/. e. Pupils trace the letter and sound /n/.f. Get pupils to say /n/ is for ‘n’.
Step e: Pupils may trace letter in the air, on the desk, in
the sandbox, on a friend’s back etc.
Step b: Prompt with questions such as:
a.What is this?b. Howmany legs does it have?c.What colour is the nose?
Ask pupils to observe you. Do
it a few times to different groups.

Step 2:
a. Show the pictures from the story and say aloud: Nat, nap, new, pan,on. (Appendix 2a – 2 d)
b. Say each word, emphasize the /n/ sound. Pupils repeat. c. Pupils match words said with pictures.
Consolidation:
a. Put up more pictures – tin, bin, pin, sit, tap, sip. (Appendix 3a – 3e)b. Pupils pick out pictures with the /n/ sound and say the word aloud.
Closure:
a. Teacher leaves the class by thanking the pupils.b. Pupils respond appropriately.
