4 Currently Funded Projects
Project Scientist and Co-Investigator of the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation
(CRaTER, PI Harlan Spence, Boston University): Launched in June 2009 on the Lunar
Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft to characterize deep space high energy radiation
environment.
Co-Investigator and Institutional PI for Strofio (PI Stefano Livi, Southwest Research Institute): A
neutral gas mass spectrometer for the BepiColombo mission to Mercury, which will investigate
neutral-plasma coupling in the Hermean exosphere and is scheduled for launch in 2015. Work at
SAO involves scientific support and development of high frequency and DC high voltages for the
spectrometer and Dr. Kasper leads the effort at SAO.
SAO Project Scientist for IRIS: Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (PI Alan Title, Lockheed
Martin, SAO PI Leon Golub), a Small Explorer (SMEX) mission to study the interface between the
solar photosphere and the corona. Responsibilities include representing SAO at IRIS scientific
meetings, working with SAO engineers on the construction of the IRIS telescope, and conducting
science with IRIS observations.
Participant in the ground based Murchison Wide-Field Array (MWA) radio telescope: Leads solar
coronal Faraday Rotation effort and serves as Chair of the MWA Science Council and Chair of the
MWA Solar Heliospheric and Ionospheric Sciences Consortium.
Co-I of the Lunar University Network for Astrophysics Research (LUNAR, PI Jack Burns, University
of Colorado, Boulder), a component of the NASA Lunar Science Institute charged with identifying
astrophysics experiments to be conducted at the moon. Heads the LUNAR Heliophysics Radio key
project focused on a simple solar radio array as an early lunar sortie science experiment and serves on
the LUNAR Steering Committee.

Project Manager of Solar Dynamics Observatory Feature Finding Team (SDO/FFT, PI Petrus
Martins, SAO): A four year effort to develop a pipeline for autonomous processing of SDO
observations to identify and archive solar features.
Member of Solar Wind Experiment (SWE) team on Wind spacecraft and PI of Mission Operations
and Data Analysis grant to process SWE observations and conduct science.
Member of the STEREO/WAVES, Solar Orbiter RPW, and Solar Orbiter SWA experiment teams
PI of several NASA grants to conduct investigations into the fundamental physics of solar corona and
solar wind including heating, instabilities, composition, shocks, magnetic reconnection, and particle
acceleration.

5.1 Strategic Planning
2008 - 2009 NASA Heliophysics Division Roadmap
o Developed 2009-2030 strategic roadmap for the NASA Heliophysics Division of the Science
Mission Directorate as part of thirteen-member team, making recommendations for research
focus and mission implementations over the next two decades.
o Work involved writing portions of the Roadmap, designing missions (two of which were used
in the final six recommended strategic missions), and conducting an assessment of the current
state of the field.
o Report was published in hardcopy in September 2009
2009 - 2012 NASA Solar and Heliospheric Management and Operations Working Group (MOWG)
o Asked by NASA HQ to serve for three years on the ten-person MOWG. Members act as
community advocates, voicing support or concern for aspects of NASA programs. We
discuss the latest trends and developments at HQ with respect to our science area and review
presentations from HQ personnel and community members on specific issues. The MOWG
issues findings to the Heliophysics Subcommittee.

o 2009 Chair of the 12-member Science Council for the Murchison Widefield Array, a low-
frequency radio array currently under construction in Western Australia with significant

Undergraduate Work
At MIT, supervised twelve undergraduate students through the MIT Undergraduate Research
Opportunities Program (UROP). For four of these students also served as advisor for senior
thesis. All senior thesis students went on to graduate school.
Currently supervising college graduate Rurik Primiani, who is working with Jonathan Weintroub
in RG division to develop a space-qualified radio correlator that could be used in a future flight
opportunity including the Radio CubeSat proposed this summer or early lunar sortie experiments
under development through the NASA LUNAR grant.
