THE INSPIRATiON
OF AN ARTIST...
NINE REASONS TO
LOVE GUCCI….
1. As a young man, Guccio Gucci worked as a bellman in the upscale
hotels of London and Paris, where he saw firsthand the highend luggage
favored by guests. Knowing the craftsmen in his native Florence excelled
in the leather trade, he returned to his home in 1921 and opened G.
Gucci & Co. (the double-G pattern still used is a tribute to the house’s
founder). Today you’ll find 317 Gucci boutiques around the world, with
three in Las Vegas (Via Bellagio, The Forum Shops at Caesars and Crystals
at CityCenter). This ad, from April 8, 1922, promotes Gucci’s specialty in
“English leather goods” and touts its “beautifully finished gift items.”
2. One of the 20th century’s most elusive celebrities was a huge fan of
Gucci. So many people asked for “Jackie O’s bag” (the hobostyle
Constance) throughout the 1960s that the house rechristened it the
Jackie bag.
3. Post-World War II rationing caused Gucci craftsmen to seek out new
materials—the accessibility of bamboo cane from Japan led to the
creation of the house’s Bamboo bag, introduced in 1947.
4. In 2010 Gucci launched Premiere, a twiceyearly collection of one-of-a-
kind gowns designed specifically for redcarpet events; at the 2011
Academy Awards, Hilary Swank wore a Gucci Premiere gown adorned
with beading and ostrich feathers.
5. Comprehending the public’s fascination with celebrities, Gucci was one
of the earliest houses to openly court A-listers, such as Audrey Hepburn,
shown above in this circa-1960s photo (with a Gucci salesperson) in the
brand’s Rome flagship. From Clark Gable to Liza Minnelli to Brad Pitt to
Sarah Jessica Parker, they’ve all flocked to Gucci; a 2007 book, Gucci by
Gucci, focuses almost exclusively on this symbiosis between celebrity and
the storied Italian house.
6. For her Fall 2011 collection, creative director Frida Giannini harkened
back to one of Gucci’s most iconic eras, the ’70s. Anjelica Huston was
among the muses, but Giannini also referenced Florence Welch of Florence
and the Machine, whom she said she could envision in any one of the
chiffon gowns that closed the show.
7. A Horse Tale Before handbags and suitcases, there were saddles and
harnesses. Gucci’s early years crafting equestrian gear resulted in many
elements translating to fashion: In 1953 the snaffle bit-—a metal bit that
rests in a horse’s mouth, with rings on either side—is used to adorn a men’s
loafer, and an icon of fashion is born.
8. How to celebrate 90 years? A Gucci car, of course. The house teamed up
with Fiat to produce the special-edition 500 by Gucci, which debuted in
Milan in late February. Classic Gucci touches include the signature red-and-
green-webbing stripe that runs the perimeter of the car. What’s the gas
mileage? Who cares—the seat belts are by Gucci!
9. Gucci’s creative director since 2006, Frida Giannini (here with James
Franco at the 2011 Academy Awards) has all but obliterated memories of
the high-wattage Tom Ford era of the 1990s by delving into the house’s
archives and putting a modern spin on details that have played a role
throughout the house’s 90-year history.
