WHAT THE HECK IS APA?APA is a citation style. (Others are MLA,

Chicago, Turabian.)

A citation style is a way to format papers, cite sources, and create references pages.

ALL Harrison College classes require you to use APA.

Using someone else’s ideas, words, or research without giving proper credit.

AVOIDING PLAGIARISM

QUOTING“This difficulty could be attributed to the fact that many students failed to purchase a style manual” (Jones, 1998, p. 199).

If your quote is longer than 40 words, indent 5 additional spaces in both the left and right margins.

AND

If no date is found, use n.d. in its place.

Student achievement is partially obtained by the student focusing on desirable goals and outcomes (Miller, 2009).

PARAPHRASING

SUMMARIZING

Condensing a significant amount of someone else’s work into a shorter statement or paragraph.

Acceptable AS LONG AS the meaning is not changed and you give the originator proper credit with a citation.

For this class, you won’t need to use the in-text citations because we

aren’t writing a full paper!

HOWEVER…
