Between the desert and thedeep blue sea... Tod Machovermakes a symphony for Perth

I Brew up in New York in the 1960s,

I when Leonard Bernstein was leadingI his Young People's Concerts, Bob Dylan

was waking up Greenwich Vil1age, andJohn Cage was shaking up, we11, just abouteverything! Inspired by my parents - mymother was a Juilliard-trained pianist, myfather a computer graphics pioneer activein the Experiments in Art and Technology(E.A.T.) movement - I absorbed traditionalong with the avant-garde. I was equallydrawn to the exhilarating dynamism ofDylan and The Beatles and have beentrying to synthesize all of these elementsever since. After studying with ElliottCar te r a tJu i l l i a rd and he lp ing P ie r reBoulez to launch IRCAM in Paris, Icame to work at the MIT Media Lab inCambridge (USA) when it opened in 1985,and have ever since found it an ideal placeto exper iment w i th combin ing acous t icsand electronics, "music" and "noise",composition and improvisation, and toexplore new relationships between theauthor and the audience.

To intensify this synthesis, I haveembarked on a series of "city symphonies"with the idea of creating musical portraitsof places, inviting the collaboration of thepeople who live there. Toronto (TorontoSymphony Orchestra) and Edinburgh

(Edinburgh International Festival andthe Royal Scolt ish National Orchestra)werEthe first two places - both workspremiered in 2013 - and Between the Desertand the Deep Blue Sea: A Symphony for Perth(commissioned by the Perth InternationalArts Festival) is the third. BuiJding onconcepts and techniques developed forIhe f irst two proiects, T sfarted my Perthinvestigations in September 2013, f i rst byreading about the city and surroundingsand discussing concepts with my colleaguesat the lerth Festival, then by visi t ing inperson. While in Perth for two weeks,I explored the city extensively (binauralrecorder in hand), mef peopJe from a l lwalks of 1ife, listened to - and improvisedwith - a diverse range of musicians (fromindie rockers to classical instrumentaliststo laptop improvlsors to didgeridoomasters and more), and supervisedworkshops throughout fhe greater Pertharea with students from elementary to highschool using our Hyperscore graphicalcomposition software.

I am writing this text in mid-December f rom my 18th-century barnin cold, snowy Boston, ref lect ing onhot, sunny Perth as heard in the myriadof sounds rece ived, th rough my own'husical

impressions, and via continueddiscussion with my new friends fromhalfway around the world. When theSymphony for Perth ts premiered byWASO on March 1st, I hope that all willhear a compos i t ion re f lec f ing the fee l o fthe land, the v i ta l i t y o I the peop le , andthe cha l lenge and promise o f exp los ivegrowth and change over the comingyears.
