Human Teeth vs. Animal Teeth
1st Grade Student PowerPoint
By: Allison LeCoq - EDT 610
Animal TeethWhat do we know about them?– They can be sharp and pointy– They help with eating and
catching prey– Animals don’t have to go to the
dentist like people do
Animal TeethWhat do we want to know about them?– Do they fall out like ours do?– How do they take care of them?– Do all animals have the same
teeth?– Which animal has the biggest
teeth?– How are they like our teeth?
Human TeethWhat do we know about them?– They need to be brushed and
flossed everyday– They help with eating and
chewing– They fall out and grow back in
Human TeethWhat do we want to know about them?– How many are there?– Why are they shaped differently?– Why do they fall out?
Do animal teeth fall out?YES!–Some animals like cats and
dogs have 2 sets of teeth. The baby teeth fall out and are replaced by the adult teeth
–Other animals, like elephants, have several sets of teeth that fall out all the time!
Did You Know?Sharks can lose their teeth every two weeks to replace worn or broken ones?Beavers, guinea pigs and rabbits have front teeth (incisors) that never stop growing?Alligators have a total of 80 teeth that fall out and grow back in all the time!
How do animals take care of their teeth?
Pets can have their teeth cleaned at the veterinarian’s officeCrocodiles wash their teeth in the water and then sterilize them in the sunlightBy eating their prey and then chewing on the bones, animals like wolves help keep their teeth clean
How do animals take care of their teeth?
Rabbits, horses and elephants chew grasses, leaves and plants to clean their teethAnimals at the zoo have their teeth cleaned by a veterinarian Animals hardly ever get cavities even though they never go to the dentist!
Do all animals have the same teeth?
No!– It depends on the animal and what
they eat.
Plant eaters have more flat teeth called molars to chew and grind withMeat eaters have sharper teeth called canines to catch prey and tear their food with
We learned:
Mammals are heterodonts–This means that some of our
teeth are shaped differentFish and reptile teeth are all shaped the same, but they come in different sizes
Mammal Teeth
Reptile/Fish Teeth
Which animal has the biggest teeth?
The elephant does!!!•Their tusks are really long teeth called incisors
•Can grow to 10 feet long
•Can weigh Up to 200 pounds
So how many teeth do humans have?
We have 2 sets– 20 baby teeth– 32 adult teeth
Why do they fall out?– Just like some animals, we are born
with two sets of teeth– The baby teeth fall out so the adult
teeth can grow in
Our 3 types of teeth:1. Incisors– Front teeth2. Canines– Pointy teeth3. Molars– Back teeth*They are all shaped differently to
help us eat and digest food
How are animal teeth like human teeth?
1. We both use them to eat food
2. We both have to clean them, just in different ways
3. Animal teeth have different shapes like human teeth do
4. We both lose our teeth5. We both use our teeth to
show emotions (angry, happy)
How are animal teeth different from human teeth?
1. Reptile and fish teeth are all shaped the same – ours are different shapes
2. We don’t use our teeth to kill prey like meat eaters do
3. Some animals have several sets of teeth (sharks, elephants), while we only have two
Learning Objectives• TSW discuss what they know and
what they want to know about human teeth vs. animal teeth with a class-wide KWL chart (Comprehension)
• TSW Identify the three different types of teeth humans have and the purpose each serves. (Comprehension)
• TSW State how many teeth humans have (baby and adult)
Learning Objectives• TSW Compare and contrast physical
characteristics of human teeth from animal teeth using models. (Analysis)
• TSW, In small groups, using a variety of methods, conduct research on a specific animal’s teeth characteristics using a variety of methods (Synthesis)
• TSW Prepare a presentation using research findings and present to class as a group (Synthesis)
Learning Objectives• TSW Discuss the similarities and
differences between the different animals’ teeth. (Comprehension)
• TSW Work successfully in a small group and practice listening skills during group presentations. (Application)
• TSW Review what they learned by completing the “L” on the “KWL” chart and discussing results as a class. (Comprehension)
