The Mighty Red Machine (which is
Burgess House) has done it again,
winning the 2019 House Sports
Cup!
House Sports Day (held last Friday)
is a chance for each House to
compete together in a range of
fun sports activities. These are all
events designed by our Grade 6
leaders who run each of the
sessions. These include: Soccer Ball Kick; Bean Bag Throw; Hurdle Relay; Poison Ball and much
more! Our students are organised into Prep—6 House teams and score points for how well
they achieve each events goals. Well done on each of our organising Grade 6 team, to the
organising teachers, Russell Sivewright and Lucie Kershaw and to all the Houses for
participating so well.
Our House system is a great way to promote school pride as well as put a focus on our School
Values, Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. We look forward to the 2020 House Cup.
On Thursday the 22nd of August RPS held our annual book day
parade for Book Week. We all dressed up and walked a lap of the basketball court. We saw some amazing costumes! There were lots of Harry Potters and Hermione Grangers and some of the teachers dressed up as Crayons or characters from the Mr Men books. After our outstanding parade we were split up and sent to different classrooms for three book activities based on the CBCA Shortlisted Books. Our activities all had a connection to one of the books and we had to be very creative. In Todd’s room we read ‘The Patchwork Bike’ by Maxine Beneba Clarke, then we made our very own patchwork bike. There were lots of other fun activities and everyone had a great time.

Sacred Heart Mission Food Drive! Next week RPS will be collecting donations of food for the Sacred Heart Mission. If you could please bring in non perishable food such as canned food, long life milk, water, chips etc and leave it in the box in the Office foyer by Friday the 6th of September. The Sacred Heart Mission will then prepare it into meals for the homeless. Let’s work together as a RPS community and help the homeless! Thanks Alana C& Lucy A
Time for Times Tables! Why learn times tables?
Times tables save time! Early maths starts with counting, and the way we organise it almost certainly stems from our first mathematical aid, our fingers. Arithmetic is an extension of counting – learning the most efficient ways of calculating allows us to deal with larger numbers, and eventually with much larger numbers, without the slow process of moving backwards and forwards, one number at a time.
In the longer term, as well as their obvious application to multiplication, we need tables for division, and algebra also uses a great deal of division and multiplication. Many mathematical concepts are much easier to pick up if we don’t have to start at the beginning and count through each item – knowing them automatically frees all our attention so that we can focus on whatever prob-lem we have to solve.
So, multiplication tables save time and free up brain space. There are so many great resources out there to help kids learn their tables. Some suggestions that might be of assistance are in the box to the right Cassie Shaw -- Numeracy Learning Specialist

Richmond Primary Rubbish Collage
Grade 5/6C is extremely passionate about what happens to the envi-ronment. Lately a group of girls have been working very hard on an artwork made of the rubbish we found in our school. We collected the rubbish on the second day of Term 3 - in just 2 days the bins were overflowing with rubbish. We took what we needed and went to work cutting the rubbish, sticking it on a board to make the recycling sign. Every year 30 million tonnes goes to landfill and kills our sea life and land life turtles are almost EXTINCT because we throw plastic in the ocean and they eat it, mistaking it for food. The sign will be located in the library window - come and take a look! by Olivia T and Lucia M

In term 4, the students work very hard with a script and develop a play and perform it for you. This is very exciting for the students. Please stay tuned for more information about this in October. We hope to see your there.
Two recent Fund Raising events saw an opportunity for families
to give back to the school. Well done to our Trivia Night team,
led by Kristy Fuller and our Father’s Day stall team, led by Dayna
Maplestone. The Trivia Night raised about $19,000+ and the
Father’s Day stall about $2,300 - congratulations!
This sees our total Fund Raising for the year at about $90,000
which is above our target of $82,000. School Council are aiming
to use this money toward refurbishing our toilet blocks—we will
keep you informed on progress of this work in future
newsletters
We rely on a small team of volunteers to run these events but
our numbers are dwindling. We ask for families who haven’t
had a chance yet to contribute some time to the Events team to
sign up to help our final Event the Arts Gala in October.
Selling your house? Mention RPS at the time of listing and Biggin & Scott Richmond will donate $1,000.00 to the school. They will also donate $500.00 to the school for every new management property signed up, where RPS is mentioned.
