Biography: H B. Hough (Columbia University School of Journalism, B.Litt. 1918) and his wife, ElizabethBowie Hough, 1894-1965 (Columbia University School of Journalism, B.Litt. 1919), were co-owners,publishers, and editors of the Vineyard Gazette (Martha's Vineyard, MA) from 1920 until 1965. H.B. Houghwas the author of many books of essays on Martha's Vineyard and on editing a country newspaper, as well asthe author of short stories and magazine articles. The Houghs sold the Vineyard Gazette to James Reston in1965, although H.B. Hough continued editing and writing for the weekly journal until 1983. He was married in1979 to Edith Graham Blake and died in 1985.
Summary: Correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, research files, documents, printed materials,photographs, and memorabilia of Mr and Mrs Hough. Correspondence includes both personal and businessletters, dealing with wildlife conservation, civic interests, and birding. There is some correspondence of GeorgeA. Hough, Sr., father of H.B. Hough, who was editor of the New Bedford Evening Standard. Most of thecorrespondence is arranged alphabetically, by personal name or subject, out-going and incoming filed together.Henry and Elizabeth Hough's correspondence, for which there are no incoming or related letters, are filedchronologically. Cataloged correspondents include Calvin Coolidge, Max Eastman, Helen Keller, John F.Kennedy, Emily Post, and James Reston. Manuscripts include appointment books, journals and diaries,manuscripts for book reviews, lecture notes, and radio scripts. Typescripts are primarily of essays, articles,editorials, and books written by H.B. Hough. Research materials include files for Hough's many books andsubject files for selected topics of interest to Hough. Documents pertain to the Vineyard Gazette (1938-1986). Photographs are primarily of the Hough family, Hough residences, and Martha's Vineyard scenery.Memorabilia includes materials on Columbia University, certificates and awards, a scrapbook by George A.Hough, and historical materials.
