April 24, 2017 Dear Parents: This letter is sent to inform you that I will be out on medical leave for the remainder of the school year. In my absence, Mr. Collins will become the lead administrator and Mr. Brian Hinn will be serving as the acting Assistant Principal. Mr. Hinn is one of our Special Education teachers, currently working with the 8th grade. He has his administrative license from Cardinal Stritch University. Prior to working a Horace Mann, he has also worked at Sheboygan Falls Middle School and Fairview Elementary in Plymouth, totaling thirteen years in education. On short term absences, he has previously filled in as an administrative role and his knowledge of our building, students and district make him a very viable option for this need. I believe the transition to these two gentlemen will afford a seamless transition. Thank you in advance for your support with these changes. If you do have any questions, please feel to contact me by telephone or email prior to Friday, April 28, 2017. Sincerely, Vicki Ritchie Principal
Different Pick-Up/Drop-Up
Address for Yellow Bus Riders
Does your student get pick up or dropped off by the
yellow bus at a different location than your home
address? If so, you need to fill out a new form for
2017-18. Stop in the Horace Mann Office to pick one
up! This does not apply to the students who ride under
the free transportation application.
Diploma Dash Join the 6th Annual Diploma Dash 5K run/walk and 1 mile grade school
run/walk hosted by the Sheboygan Public Education Foundation to sup-
port educational programming in Sheboygan Public Schools!
Held on June 3rd, 2017, the run/walk will commemorate educational
achievement in Sheboygan as it will start and end at Vollrath Park, the historic site of the
Sheboygan Area School District’s graduation.
Entry fees are $12 student, $17 adult. Pick up an entry form in the office.

Did you know that the Easter Bunny of
Student Council came to Horace Mann to
hide over 400 plastic eggs throughout the
school each night for two nights before
Easter? The eggs were filled with special
treats or a raffle ticket. Horace Mann staff
were very generous in donating the treats, gift cards and
other prizes! It was fun to see the students still excited
about the Easter egg hunt.
Xanadu, Jr. Congrats & Thanks
Congratulations and thank you to all the students and fami-
lies for their work on Xanadu, Jr. At our final performances,
we had right around 100 students involved on- and off-
stage. This is pretty amazing! As we look forward to next
year, we would like to replenish some of our supplies. Any
donations would be greatly appreciated! Here are some
items we are looking for: make-up sponges, q-tips, boxes of
tissues, two laundry baskets, large clear storage bins with
lids, black cable ties of various lengths, black gaffer's tape
(like duct tape but fabric instead of plastic), and painter's
tape of various widths (colors don't matter). Please contact
Mr. Rhoads, Mrs. Plautz or Mr. Lamb if you can help us out.
Thank you!
Parent Pick-Up
Reminder
Parents should pick up their students in
front in the parking lot by the auditorium
between 3:00-3:15 p.m. Students should
be picked up after 3:15 p.m. behind the
school by the
cafeteria on the
playground area.
There has been a
slight variation for Stage Crew due to the
number of students. Those students can
be picked up in front Tuesdays and
Thursdays.
It’s the Rule...Shots Before School!
Did You Have Your Shots
for 6th Grade?
Prior to the start of school, students entering 6th grade are
required by law to receive a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus,
diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine or sign a waiver of declina-
tion! Preteen wellness visits, Tdap and other recommended
vaccines are available from your healthcare provider and
are covered by most health insurance plans. Lakeshore
Community Health Center and our local health depart-
ments also provide Tdap and other recommended vaccines,
especially for children who do not have health insurance.
Please contact your healthcare provider or clinic to sched-
ule an appointment!
Please notify your school office if your child has already
received their Tdap vaccine.
If you have not already provided your school with a vac-
cination date, you MUST bring evidence of your child re-
ceiving the Tdap vaccine to 6th grade registration!

Cell Phone Policy
Students enrolled in the Sheboygan Area School District
shall be permitted to possess and use mobile devices
(including, but not limited to, cellular phones) in accord-
ance with the following guidelines:
Mobile devices may not be used during the instruc-
tional day except with the permission of the administra-
tion.
During the instructional day, specific uses of mobile de-
vices will be determined by building administration. At
Horace Mann Middle School this means the only
time cell phones may be used is when school lets
out. However, they are not to be used if students
participate in after-school activities or in homework
clubs.
Cell Phone Etiquette: After school center and IMC are
places where students from the entire school gathers
while waiting for rides, buses, or until they go home.
This space has specific directions of
signing in, staying at tables once
seated, and follow cell phone expec-
tations. Cell Phones should be flat on
table if in use to avoid students tak-
ing videos or pictures of others and
respecting the rights of all students
and staff in this space. It is a privi-
lege to be at HMS after school each day.
Mobile devices that are approved for individual students
under this policy may not be loaned to other students
while on school premises.
Usage of mobile devices during non-instructional times
that is considered disruptive to the school environment
and management of the school, as determined by the
administration, may result in a termination of this
privilege.
Any violations of the above guidelines may lead to an
immediate revocation of a student’s authorization to use
mobile devices on school premises.

Music Notes
As the year is winding down, the music depart-ment is still going strong! Our spring concerts are right around the corner. The chorus & orchestra concert is Tuesday, May 23rd at 7 p.m. and again Wednesday, May 24th for the student body, (time TBD). The band concert is Thursday, June 1st at 7 p.m. For each of these concerts, students will receive information about what time to arrive and what attire is expected. Our extra music groups are still going strong! Chamber Orchestra meets Tuesdays at 3:05 pm, Glee meets Wednesdays at 7 a.m., and Jazz Band Thursdays at 3:05 pm. Looking ahead to summer, there are many op-portunities for our musicians! The district sum-mer programs are taking applicants. The groups include middle school Glee, orchestra, band, and jazz band. There is also a high school jazz band for our current 8th graders. Information is availa-ble on the district website, and in each of the music classrooms. For students looking for more intense and fun music, many of the colleges in the area have week-long music camps. The camps we know best are Lakeland College (has commuter or sleep-over options: Mrs. Milsted teaches here), Lawrence University (band only; Mrs. Plautz teaches here), UW-Whitewater (chorus, strings, jazz, band), or UW-Green Bay (band & orches-tra). Check with one of the music teachers if you might be interested in more information. There may be scholarships available as well. Congratulations and thank you to the cast, crew, and families of Xanadu, Jr. for a fantastic and truly memorable show. There are memory dvd’s and photo cd’s available for purchase. Pick up an order form from Mrs. Plautz, Mr. Lamb, or the office. Due dates will be printed on the forms.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC MEETING
MAY 23 at 6 P.M.
BEFORE THE ORCHESTRA/CHOIR CONCERT
Middle School Sports / Athletic Informational Meeting for 2017-18: This meeting will occur in the Horace Mann Cafeteria
at 6pm on Tuesday, May 23rd. There will be similar meetings at Urban and Farnsworth if this time and date do not work for
your students/family. This will be an opportunity to receive how to prepare for next year's middle school sports, expectations,
forms, and time to ask questions.
Forward Testing & STAR Testing State of Wisconsin Forward testing was held the week of April 10-13, 2017. Horace Mann will be doing this
assessment with each grade each morning that week for approximately the first hour and one half.
Listed below are the tests each grade is slated to participate in:
Grade 6 ELA-Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking and Math-Two Sessions
Grade 7 ELA-Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking and Math-Two Sessions
Grade 8 ELA-Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking, Math-Two Sessions,
Science-Two Sessions, and Social Studies-Two Sessions.
We expect the results to be sent home with students or near the end of year report cards. These results will
provide a picture of where your child sits academically compared to other Wisconsin students at their
grade. For this reason, we ask that you encourage your student to do their best on each test session. It is
also very helpful for them to be present and on time each of the testing days. We will provide snacks and
water for testing, and as always, we encourage the students to have a healthy breakfast each morning.
Thank you for your assistance and support.
In addition to the Forward test, each grade will participate in the STAR testing. If you have any questions
regarding these tests, please feel free to contact Mrs. Ritchie or Mr. Collins.
Schools have an important role in preventing youth suicide,
and being aware of potential risk factors in students’ lives
is vital to this responsibility. The trending Netflix series 13
Reasons Why, is raising such concerns. The series portrays
a 17-year- old, who takes her life and leaves behind record-
ings for 13 people who she says in some way were part of
why she killed herself. Each tape recounts painful events.
While many youth are capable of differentiating between a
TV drama and real life, engaging in thoughtful conversa-
tions with them about the show is vital. Doing so presents
an opportunity to help them process the issues addressed,
consider the consequences of certain choices, and reinforce
the message that suicide is not a solution to problems and
that help is available. This is particularly important for ado-
lescents who are isolated, struggling, or vulnerable. Re-
search shows that exposure to another person’s suicide, or
to graphic or sensationalized accounts of death, can be one
of the many risk factors that youth struggling with mental
health conditions cite as a reason they contemplate or at-
tempt suicide.
Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE) and the
JED Foundation have created a Guide for Families for con-
versations specific to the 13 Reasons Why series:
1. Ask your child if they have heard or seen the series
13 Reasons Why. While we don’t recommend that they
be encouraged to view the series, do tell them you want
to watch it, and discuss their thoughts.
2. If they exhibit any of the warning signs, eg. direct
or indirect suicide threats, planning, a preoccupation
with death, changes in behavior or appearance, or emo-
tional distress, don’t be afraid to ask if they have
thought about suicide or if someone is hurting them.
Raising the issue of suicide does not increase the risk.
On the contrary, it creates the opportunity to offer help.
3. Ask your child if they think any of their peers ex-
hibit warning signs. Talk with them about how to seek
help for a peer. Guide them on how to respond when
they see or hear any of the warning signs.
4. Listen to your child’s comments without judgment.
Doing so requires that you fully concentrate, under-
stand, respond and then remember what is being said.
Put your own agenda aside.
5. Get help from a mental health professional if you
are concerned for your child’s safety.
