I Sea I Care Ambassadors Last week our I Sea I Care Ambassadors from grade 4 were presented with their official badges and certificates. The ‘I sea, I care’ School Ambassador Program was developed by the Dolphin Research Institute. It provides a marine education program that teaches school children the significance of our unique marine ecosystems and species. By educating a group of
marine leaders it is hoped that they will share their knowledge and experiences with fellow students and encourage them to value and appreciate our living marine treasures. We look forward to hearing about what have learnt through school assemblies during the year. Congratulations to Jenna, Morgan, Cameron and Josh for begin selected as our ambassadors.
Babies have arrived The kits have arrived. PA invited me to their classroom last week to meet the new arrivals. Classroom pet rabbits, Chloe and Apollo gave birth to two gorgeous baby rabbits. The children of Prep A taught me that baby rabbits are called ‘kits’ and a group of baby rabbits are called a ‘kindling’. Our kits do not have official names though the children
have been calling them Boombah and White Nose. What a fabulous learning experience for our students!
All Excursions Cancelled! (Just kidding!) As a prompt to their writing, the children of grade 3 were told that Mrs Howden had cancelled all excursions and they needed to write a persuasive text to convince me to
change my mind. Four students from grade 3A arrived at my door this week to present their case. Xander, Amelie, Bethany and Piper gave the following arguments for keeping excursions:
- They are fun - You can learn about different topics - Learn about nature and being in the community - We need our brains to have a rest from school
Fortunately grade 3 were so convincing that all excursions will go ahead for 2017!
End of term Easter Raffle/Bonnet Parade
Thank you to all of the parents who have already donated Easter Eggs for our end of term raffle. We are currently collecting donations for our Easter Raffle. Please place any donations in to the basket in the foyer of the office. With only two weeks until the end of term we would also like to give you advance warning that we will be holding an
Easter Bonnet parade on the last day of term, Friday 31st March at 9.15am in the hall. We are encouraging students to wear an Easter hat/ costume and we invite all families to come along and watch the parade. Carole Howden Principal

Music Program
Music news : A farewell.
After 15 years teaching piano at Tyabb we say goodbye to one of our wonderful Instrumental teachers. Rose Murphy will be leaving us at the end of the term 1. Rose has been a dedicated and very organised piano/keyboard teacher with many students benefitting from her expertise, thoroughness and positive manner. She will be missed by the students, myself and the Instrumental team. We thank her most sincerely for her hard work over the years. A new teacher has been engaged and I have been discussing arrangements with her so Rose’s students will have piano lessons with a smooth transition into next term. Julia Furneaux, our other piano teacher has a wonderful family of musicians and one of her daughters will be taking these students. Kirsten Furneaux, a former Tyabb student, has a wealth of music experience. She has completed Grade 8 piano and VCE music performance with piano as her instrument, she teaches privately at home and has taught piano and voice at The Coastal School of Music in Mt Martha. Kirsten will be working with Rose next week to make the transition to a new teacher as smooth as possible for the students. At this stage she will be working on Fridays next term as she has other commitments on the Monday. She will make contact with the parents before the next term. We look forward to her joining the instrumental music team at Tyabb. Merran Wyatt Music Teacher.

What is PLC?
A Professional Learning Community (PLC) is based on the work of Richard and Rebecca Dufour. It is a group of teachers committed to working collaboratively to achieve better results for the students they teach. A PLC operates under the philosophy that the key to improved learning is point of need teaching based on results. Professional Learning Teams plan learning cycles using the Victorian Curriculum and four guiding questions: · What do we want all our students to know? · How will we know they have learnt it? · What will we do for those who don’t know it? · What will we do for those who do know it? What are PLC Maths Workshops? Professional Learning Teams work together using the Victorian Curriculum and professional readings to decide on the Power Standards for the year - the minimum standard that every student needs to demonstrate by either showing, making or doing in Mathematics. These standards are then broken down into Essential Skills and I Can Statements that children work through to achieve success. These steps are developmentally sequenced using research and professional reading. Students then complete pre-testing based on the Essential Skills to determine their point of need for the learning cycle. Each cycle operates for 2-3 weeks with grouping and lessons planned around the identified point of need for individual students. Cycles conclude with a post-test and reflection, which gives an excellent indication of student success, progress and where additional instruction may be needed. Students who are still experiencing difficulty with the current focus after the cycle will be worked with individually to further assist with their understanding. Each team across the school (Prep, Gr 1 / 2, Gr 3 / 4, Gr 5 /6) are currently implementing their first PLC cycle for the year. In the table below you can see what is being covered and when:

Writing PLC This year we are bringing the PLC approach into Literacy – particularly writing. As previously notified in the last Curriculum Corner, we will be implementing VCOP for writing. Students will be writing a Cold Write (which is the pre-test); they will then be focussing on a range of writing techniques that are at their point of need and then they will complete a Big Write (which is the post-test). Students will be assisted individually with the aspects of writing that they need support. Staff will be meeting regularly to assess and moderate students writing using a collaborative process.
