Brief History of the College (To be updated – Included Milestones document)
Government College, Rajamahendravaram started functioning as a Zilla school in 1853 and was
upgraded as a Provincial school of Madras presidency in 1868. This was the beginning of the
unbroken story of Government College, Rajamahendravaram which completed about 160 years
of its mammoth service in the field of Higher Education. It is the first and the oldest government
College in Andhra Pradesh. The high school classes were discontinued in 1885 and the college
has since remained exclusively as college for University classes. The College was affiliated to
University of Madras in 1891.
At the commencement of 19th century, the Government college at Rajamahendravaram was one
of the only three graded Colleges maintained by Government in Madras Presidency, the other
two being Presidency college at Chennai and Kumbakonam college at Kumbakonam. Having
been started by the British, the college imparted Higher Education of European standards under
the masterly guidance of academic luminaries from Oxford and Cambridge Universities and
produced personae par excellence in all fields of life and learning.
Stalwarts of Arts College:
The great people who served this institution include Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who worked
as a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy (1916-1919). He was the first Vice-
President of India (1952-1962), and also served as second President of India (1962-1967). He is
considered as the most influential scholar of comparative religion and philosophy. Another
stalwart Sri Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu was a social reformer of Andhra Pradesh who
worked in this college as a faculty member in Telugu Department during the year 1876-77. He is
widely considered as the man who first brought about the renaissance in Telugu people and

Telugu literature. He fought for the emancipation and empowerment of women way back in
1910.
Some of the students of this Alma Mater, who later turned into giants in various spheres were Sri
K.V. Reddy Naidu, Acting Governor of Madras Presidency in 1936, Sri Tanguturi Prakasam
Pantulu, known as Andhra Kesari (literally the Lion of Andhra) who became the first Chief
Minister of the erstwhile Madras Province that was to become later Andhra State, Sri Varahagiri
Jogaiah Panthulu (illustrious father of Sri V.V. Giri, former President of India), Sri V.K. Krishna
Menon, former Defence Minister of India and Sri P.S. Rao, Chairman, Damodar Valley
Corporation, former Governor of Kerala and an awardee of Padmabhushan. The college also
produced some outstanding literary and artistic stalwarts like Sri Damerla Rama Rao, a
renowned Painter and freedom fighters like Sri Gadicherla Harisarvottama Rao who took active
part in Vandematharam Movement in pre-indepence era and Sri Koka Subba Rao, the former
Chief Justice of Supreme Court.
The College was affiliated to Andhra University in 1926. The Centenary celebrations of the
college were held in February 1960, with Sri C.D.Deshmukh, the then Chairman of U.G.C. as
President. Undergaduate courses were started in the college from 1930. PUC and Intermediate
courses were withdrawn in 1971-‘72 and Vocational course in B.Com (Computers) was
introduced during the academic year 2007. B.A. with Economics, Statistics and Computer
Applications was started in 2008. The college has started restructured courses in B.Sc. on self-
finance basis with combinations of Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science; Mathematics,
Statistics, Computer Science; Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry and Microbiology, Zoology,
Chemistry. Post Graduate Courses in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry were started during
the academic year 1971-72 and the college has the distinction of being the first College in

Government sector to introduce the Post Graduate courses in science subjects. M.A. (Telugu)
and M.Com courses were introduced from 1982 and 1987 respectively. M.Sc. (Zoology) was
started during 2001-02 and M.Sc. (Botany) in 2009 on self-finance basis. At present, the college
offers instruction in 22 UG programmes and 9 PG programmes. The Department of
Chemistry has been recognized by Andhra University as a Research Center and it is offering
M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses in Chemistry and the Department has produced 2 Ph.D.s and 5
M.Phil’s so far. The Department of Physics has also been recognized as a Research Centre by
Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in 2011. Eight research scholars are carrying out research in
the Departments of Physics. One M.Phil degree was awarded recently. At present, a major
research project worth Rs. 25 Lakh funded by BRNS is being executed sanctioned research
project is being executed by the Department, besides three minor research projects on hand. The
Dept. of Mathematics has also four Research scholars working for their M.Phil. and Ph.D.
degrees.
Metcalfe Boys Hostel, attached to the college was started in July 1950. It is under the control of
the Principal assisted by a committee consisting of a Deputy warden and other staff members of
the college. A new girls hostel was built in the college campus with UGC funds and it has been
opened in August 2011.
The UGC granted Autonomous status to this college during the academic year 2000-20-1 and it
is extended till 2013. The College is one of the very few Government Colleges in Andhra
Pradesh which were granted autonomy. Under the Autonomous set up, the college introduced
Semester system. The college was accredited at Grade ‘A” by NAAC in 2004 and again has
been re-accredited with NAAC-“A” grade in November 2011. The grade is applicable upto

November 2016 and this is the only one Government College in East Godavari district to get
NAAC ‘A’ grade.
Some of the prominent British Principals who worked in this institution were E.P. Metcalfe
(1877-1896), E.W. Middlemast (1896-1903), Mark Hunter (1903-1909), O.J. Couldrey (1909-
1919), and C.J. Wilkinson (1919-1921). The college has grown from strength to strength over
the past 160 years and is forging ahead as a Global Educational Institution under the dynamic
leadership of the present Principal, Dr. Ch. Masthanaiah.
From the Academic year 2012-2013, the 1st year Degree Courses have been brought under the
affiliation of Adikavi Nannaya University, Rajamahendravaram thus initiating the transfer of
affiliation from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. The Degree Certificates to the students are
issued by the Adkikavi Nannaya University from the year 2015.
The college now caters to the educational needs of more than 3000 students with various groups
and combinations of study at UG and PG levels. The college withstood the onslaught of social,
political and economic changes and emerged as a towering champion of education for the
upliftment of the poor and the downtrodden sections of the society.

As per the special Governing Body meeting of the Government College [A], Rajamahendravaram held on 20 May 2014, the Government College [A], Rajamahendravaram has initiated Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) from the academic year 2014-15 in the college. 17 Economics Indian Economy TISS – Additional Degree Program: In association with the TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences), the Government of Andhra Pradesh is conducting a program to offer an additional degree to the UG students from the academic year 2015-16. The Government College (Autonomous), Rajamahendravaram has also been selected for offering this program to its UG students. The Program includes instruction in industry required job oriented courses such as – Analytical Skills, Communication Skills & Soft Skills, Financial literacy, Digital Literacy, Entrepreneurship, Legal literacy, and Youth Leadership. The entry is restricted to 200 students. In the final year, the students have to appear for an exam conducted by the TISS. The successful candidates will be awarded Degree by the TISS in addition to the regular degree awarded by the College/ University.

Admission Procedure: Separate Application is to be submitted online for each Group. At the time of interview/ admission, the following certificates need to be submitted for verification: 1. Transfer Certificate; 2. Conduct Certificate; 3. Study Certificate (for four years); 4. Residence Certificate (only for private study); 5. Income Certificate (from MRO) latest; 6. Permanent Caste Certificate issued by MRO in case of SC, ST & BC; 7. 10th Class Pass Certificate; 8. Intermediate Pass Certificate; 9. NCC/Sports/ Physically Handicapped/ Ex-Servicemen Certificate (as applicable); 10. Fee Payable. Photostat copies of these certificates need to be submitted at the time of admission.
Details of Enrolment/ General Rules of Admission:
1. The online applications for admission into the College should be filled properly by providing all the necessary information. The provisionally selected lists and waiting lists are displayed in the Notice Board/ intimated through SMS to mobiles.
2. The candidates selected for admission should bring their Parent/ Guardian at the time of interview without fail.
3. At the time of Interview times, extension of time will not be given to the candidates selected under merit list to produce any certificate or payment of fee.
4. The students must abide by rules and regulations of the college. Uniform is compulsory for UG and PG students.
5. The College reserves the right to alter the fee structure and other conditions mentioned in the prospectus when there is a change in the rules from time to time by the Government and University.
6. Admission will not be made if sufficient number of applications are not received in any group combinations, and the applicants may be accommodated in the combination in which the seats are vacant subject to their eligibility and willingness.
7. The candidates are informed to keep the required number of Photostat copies of the documents which they submit at the time of admission. The original documents once submitted will not be returned.
General Rules to be followed After Admission:
I. I.D. Card & Dress Code:
Student must carry the Identification Card compulsorily and should wear the College Uniform for all days in the week except on Saturday.

II. Attendance:
1. 75% of attendance in theory and 90% of attendance in Practicals is compulsory for every Semester.
2. The candidate who is not eligible for the examination due to the shortage of attendance i.e., less than 75% may be condoned upto 66% on medical grounds with a fee of Rs.500/-. Otherwise, they will have to seek re-admission in the same semester in the next academic year.
III. Tuition Fee:
1. Candidates must pay the tuition fee of the semester within the stipulated date.
2. Defaulters of payment of tuition fee will not be eligible to take the examination.
IV. No Waiving of Fees to discontinued Students:
As per the University instructions, students who discontinue their studies for various personal reasons should pay the entire fee for all the three years. Under any circumstances no waiving of fee to discontinued student is admissible. Parents are advised to make clear note of the fee structure as it is an Autonomous Institution. No T.C. and C.C. will be issued if there are any dues from the students.
V. Examination Fee:
1. Candidates who pay the tuition fee and have minimum 75% attendance will be eligible to pay examination fee.
2. The candidates who do not pay the examination fee will not be promoted to the next semester.
VI. Hostel Facility:
Hostel accommodation available for Boys and Girls separately. The students will be admitted in the hostels on first come first serve basis. For other details like fee, etc., students are advised to contact the Dy.Warden Sri G. Chandraiah, Lecturer in Commerce.
VII. Scholarship Holders:
1. The SC and ST Scholarship Holders are not eligible to get Scholarship if they discontinue in the middle of the course.
2. The SC and ST candidates who wish to take TC without completion of the courses have to pay all their dues and take TC.
3. The Scholarship Holders have to submit the Original Caste and Income Certificate in the Office.
VIII. Admission on T.C.:
There is no admission on T.C. as the College is Autonomous and its Examination pattern and syllabus are different.

IX. Re-Admission:
Students – (i) who do not pay the Tuition fee; (ii) who do not have the required attendance; and (iii) who do not pay the Examination fee, may seek re-admission for continuing in the same Semester in the next academic year.
X. Parent – Teachers Meet:
Parent or Guardian must attend the Parent-Teacher Meet without fail whenever intimated by the proctors. Each student must submit 4 self-addressed cards and two stamp-size photos to their proctors concerned.

3. Administrative Overview
Administrative Setup:
The College has been conferred Autonomy in the year 2000. The administration of the College is overseen by a Governing Body, chaired by the Hon’ble Commissioner of Collegiate Education. The day-to-day administration is directly supervised by the Principal, who is the Member Secretary of the Governing Body. In executing the administrative functions, the Principal is guided by the CPDC (College Promotion and Development Council) which consists as members the Parents, Philonthropists, Alumni, Experts, Academicians and selected Faculty members; and is assisted by the Administrative Office headed by an Administrative Officer. In academic sphere, the Principal is assisted by the Academic cell consisting of Academic Coordinator and two Assistant Academic Coordinators.

4. Facilities in the College General Infrastructure:
The College is situated in a sprawling campus of 38 acres. It has old and new buildings consisting sufficient class rooms. The campus is mainly divided into two blocks namely Science Block and Arts Block. New P.G. Block has been constructed and some of its rooms are temporarily being utilized by Adikavi Nannaya University, Rajamahendravaram for running its classes. Within the large vicinity lay many other institutions such as Dr. Allu Ramalingaiah Government Homoeopath College, Dr. BRAOU Study Centre, Andhra University Study Centre, O/o the RJD of Collegiate Education, Post Office, etc. Sports facilities such as Professionally built Tennis Court, Volleyball Court and Basket Ball Courts are available in the College ground. Metcalf Hostel for Boys, Students Mess and newly built Girls Hostel also are situated within the campus.
Other Facilities:
1. Hostels for Boys and Girls:
Hostel accommodation is available for Boys and Girls separately. Metcalfe Hostel for Boys was started in 1950. A separate hostel for girls has been constructed with UGC funds and it has been opened in August 2011. The students will be admitted into the hostels on first come first serve basis.
2. IT Infrastructure:
The College has been utilising the IT Infrastructure such as Computers and Networking for speedy and effective delivery of academic and administrative services to the students and the staff. Sanction of scholarships to the students and payments of salaries to the staff are done using the computers and online facilities.
3. Laboratories:
The College boasts of State-of-the-Art Laboratories for the Computer Courses as well as Science courses. The laboratories in the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology cater to the requirements of Degree and P.G. students. They further accommodate Research scholars doing M.Phil and Ph.D. under the guidance of the Senior Faculty members of the college. The Museum in the Department of Geology contains the rare collections.

4. Crystal-growth & Nano-Science Research Centre:
A Nano-Science Research laboratory has been established in the Department of Physics, in collaboration with the Chemistry division, Baba Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, to promote and further research culture among the students and faculty members. The centre receives financial support from the ‘Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences’ (BRNS), Dept. of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India, under a Major Research Project. One JRF has been allotted under this project.
5. Jawahar Knowledge Center (JKC):
The Jawahar Knowledge Center (JKC) was established in this college in December 2005 for the benefit of the student community. The JKC helps the students get employment in prestigious Software and other IT and Non-IT organisations and Public sector, by imparting them the right employability skills such as – Communication Skills, Soft Skills, Analytical Skills and Technical Skills. The centre won acclaim at State level and is now upgraded as Nodal JKC to monitor the JKCs in the East Godavari District. For the last 7 years, the center has helped many students get jobs in Multi National Companies and prestigious organisations like Infosys, TCS, MahindraSatyam, Wipro, Genpact, Syntel, Accenture, 24/7, HCL, ILM, Dr. Reddy’s Lab, etc.

6. English Language Lab:
The English Language Lab is set up with 26lakhs for imparting better communication skills in order to cope with the modern trends.
7. E-Class Rooms:
To encourage application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), 8 LCD Projectors and Laptos have been provided for e-teaching.
Wireless LAN Internet facility provided for easy access to Web.
8. Library:
The college Library is not only the Oldest but also one of the biggest libraries available in Degree Colleges. It has a rare collection of books including some

books which were published in the year 1800 A.D. It has very good collection of books in English, Telugu, Urdu, Tamil, Sanskrit, and Oria language and Literature. It has been serving as a Reference Library for the subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Commerce, Economics, and so on. The College Library has a total Collection of 79,732 books as on date, relating to various subjects. Now it is a fully computerized along with C.C. cameras. It is a good resource center for readers at present. The library is run with vast infrastructure consisting of building double ducked iron racks and reading room.
9. Study Centers:
The Distance Education study centers of three prestigious Universities viz., Andhra Univerisyt, Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University and IGNOU are available in the College campus.
The Study centers are run by experienced teachers and educational administrators who always strive to reach high academic standards. The core academic staff of the School will carry on the academic activities with the help of the well experienced teachers in their respective fields, who are working in this University as well as in other Universities.
10. MANA T.V.:
A separate T.V. room with Tele Conferencing facility is available. In this room the lessons / guest lectures, programmes, etc. broadcast by the MANA TV are exhibited to the students. In addition to this, the Commissioner also frequently uses this network to approach the Colleges and interact with the Principal and other staff members. Based on the lessons and topics, the students are allowed into the MANA TV as per a Time Table:
11. Seminar Hall, Quadrangle & Alumni Open-Air Auditorium:
The College has an Air-conditioned Seminar Hall. This is equipped with LCD projector and Audio system. Generally, all the meetings, facilitations, etc., are held in this Seminar Hall.:
In the Science Block, an Open Air Stage which is called ‘Quadrangle’ is available. The same is used for public functions such as Freshers Day, Annual Day, District Cultural Festivals, etc.

An Open-Air Auditorium was constructed by the College Alumni Association which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister in May 2015.
12. Centralised Audio Announcement System:
Given the large size of the college and due to the fact that the Classes have been spread into three blocks, viz., Arts Block, Science Block and P.G. block, it is difficult to circulate any notices, important information, etc., to the students and faculty members. To avoid this difficulty, a centralized Audio system has been made available with speakers in all classrooms and Staff rooms so as to make any important information to all the students faculty members at one time.

The College has a Safe Drinking Water facility with the installation of Water Filter.

5. Examinations, Evaluation & Results
The College was granted autonomous status by the UGC from the academic year 2000-2001. Under the Autonomous set up, the college introduced Semester system. The Syllabus for each semester and the examination pattern are setup with the help of Board of Studies for each subject. The Examination cell of the College is a confidential wing consisting of one Controller of Examinations and two Assistant Controllers of Examination. The Examination cell is a fully computerized, fool proof environment which conducts the examinations in a confidential and transparent manner and makes the evaluation process in a highly confidential and professional environment.

1. Each internal assessment test shall consist of 15 marks for written Test/ Online and 10 marks for viva voce.

2. In every semester, two internal assessment tests, each for 15 marks, shall be conducted. The best of these two tests shall be added to the mark scored in the viva voce (10 marks)
3. There is no minimum mark for Internal Assessment Test.
4. 35% is the pass minimum for external examination i.e., 26/75.
5. A student shall be declared to have passed the examination in a subject if he/she secures a minimum of 35% of marks in the Internal assessment and Semester end examination marks put together, with atleast 35% marks in the semester-end examination.
6. Attendance is compulsory for the viva voce examination in every Internal Assessment Test.
Introduction of New subjects from 2009-2010 for all Degree Courses:
For Degree I year:
a. Contemporary India, Economy, Policy and Society: (Exam will be conducted in 75:25 Pattern at the end of 2nd Semester)
b. Computer Skills: For B.A. Computers, B.Sc. Computers and B.Com.Computers (Exam will be conducted for 50marks in each semester)
c. Introduction of Computers for Non-Computers Courses: Same as with the above pattern.
For Degree II year:
a. Contemporary India, Economy, Policy and Society: (Exam will be conducted in 75:25 Pattern at the end of 2nd Semester)
b. Computer Skills: For B.A. Computers, B.Sc. Computers and B.Com.Computers (Exam will be conducted for 50marks in each semester)
c. Office Automation Tools (OAT) for Non-Computers Courses: Same as with the above pattern.
C. Credit System (Applicable upto the batches of 2013-14):
Credit system has been introduced for awarding grades instead of the existing class awarding system at the end of the degree. There are a total of 120 credits for all the 6 semesters. Out of them, 30 credits are given for Part-I (Languages) and 90 Credits for Part-II (Group subjects). 10 extra Credits will be awarded based on students’ participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as NCC, NSS, Sports, Cultural activities, Blood Donation, etc.

D. Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) (Applicable from the batch of 2014-15):
The CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) is going to be introduced to the I year undergraduate students from the academic year 2014-15. Under this system, a student has the choice to pick out one or more of the subjects, such as Interdisciplinary elective Advanced and one Skill based electives offered by each department besides core subjects as a part of the curriculum. Certain number of credits will be awarded for each core as well as chosen subjects under this system.
Under CBSE system, one interdisciplinary Elective (IE) will be offered by each department in the second year
In final year, the student has to choose one advanced elective and one skill based elective besides core subjects in each optional paper in each semester
Another notable change in the curriculum is the adoption of modular system from Academic year 2014-2015. In this system, the syllabus offered by each department in each subject for a semester is called a Module. Thus each Department frames six modules of syllabi corresponding to six semesters.
The modules and allocation of credits for various courses is shown in table 1
Besides 120 credits for actual curriculum, one each credit will be awarded to the students who take part in various extra-curricular, Co-curricular activities such as NCC, NSS, Sports & Games, Cultural and Literary events, Project work and Community Social work totaling to 125 credit points which are mandatory. Extra credits will be awarded for attendance, certificate course etc.
CREDITS: In each course there are 120 credits. In each course, the performance of each student is assessed for120 credits of which 30 credits will be that of languages and foundation courses. Interdisciplinary elective, which will be offered is fourth semester of every course, carries 2 credits
In B.Sc. course, each optional in each module will be awarded 3 credits each and 2 credits each for each practical optional subject. Besides, one advanced elective and skill based elective which will be offered in 5&6 semesters respectively awarded 2 credits each in each optional subject.
In B.A course, each core optional subject carries 4 credits each. However, in module 5&6, one advanced elective and one skill based elective will be offered by each department one credit each.

7. Internal Quality Assurance Cell (I.Q.A.C.)
1. IQAC Activities
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the college continues as a facilitator of activities and programmes aimed at achieving academic excellence in the college. The IQAC thus functions as an advisory body to the college and Academic and Research & Extension activities, student Welfare schemes, Infrastructure development and other Healthy practices as per the guidelines of NAAC.
The IQAC assures the qualitative Teaching-Learning and other services to the stakeholders by carefully monitoring every academic and administrative aspect in the College. Various departments of the college periodically submit their activities such as changes in the curriculum, seminars, workshops, guest lectures, invited talks, quiz, elocution, essay writing, iinter-colllegiate zonal, state-level sports activities, the activities of NCC/NSS/Red-Cross/DRC/JKC, and so on relating to the IQAC.
The IQAC, apart from guiding and streamlining various activities, records them with relevant photographs on quarterly basis and submits the same to the authorities concerned.
The IQAC of this college draws a perspective plan in the beginning of the academic year. The IQAC of the college is constituted with the following members:

• Outreach programmes are organized through ACHHA (Arts College Helping Hands Association), under the aegis of Dept., of English, to help the needy students and outside organizations such as orphanages and old age homes.
• Departments like Mathematics, Commerce have planned to initiate outreach programs like ‘Guppedu Biyyam’ pathakam, and one-rupee coin scheme, etc., to inculcate spirit of service among students.
• The Institution, apart from adopting its own best practices, also observes other acclaimed institutions with regard to their facilities and functioning and emulates any example worth practicing. One such is the Complaint Box.
• All the faculty members of the college deliver lectures using ICT by preparing PPTs in the subject concerned, and the students are also encouraged to present their seminars using PPTs by downloading the relevant information from the internet.
• The PG students are supplied study materials in soft copies.
• Music and dance competitions are held in different events such as light music solo, group song, classical song, classical dance, folk group dance, folk solo song, group song, skit, Mrudangam, Tabla, Dappu, Veena, Violin, etc.
• The Women Development Council of the college pays fee for some Economically Backward OC students
• Outreach Workshops are conducted by the ELF (English Language Fellow) lectures, to all the lecturers of the other departments of the college on student centered methodology, pair work and Group work.
• The Department of Botany has planned to raise Botanical garden with medicinal plants and also a vegetable garden.
• The Department of Physics has planned to launch a unique programme – ‘Lab to School’ for the benefit of students in the Government schools, by involving the P.G. students of the department.
• It has been planned to establish various clubs like English Club, e-Club, Literary Club, etc., to encourage the students’ participation in their chosen areas.
• The IQAC plans to conduct innovative competitions in the fields like - Parody songs, photography, spot painting, SUDOKU, etc., along with academic programs like essay writing, elocution, quiz, JAM, Group Discussion, etc.

7. Extra Curricular & Co-Curricular Activities
1. Physical Education & Sports:
The College has a Comprehensive Physical Education Department for providing opportunities in Sports & Games to the students. The Department has the reputation for participation and winning prizes in District-level/ University level/ State level and National level events.
2. NCC:
The College NCC wing has been working since its inception in the country in 1949. The unit has a strength of 200 students including girl students. Some of the cadets have participated in Republic Day parade and won accolades. Two faculty members each from Men and Women act as NCC officers:

8. Student Support Services
The College organizes many activities and programmes as part of Student Support Services which will help them excel in their academic and career development.
1. District Resource Centre
Most of the Government Degree Colleges are located in rural and semi urban areas and they mostly serve students from poor and underprivileged sections of the society. The students of colleges located in rural areas face disadvantages like infrastructural and teacher shortages, lack of exposure to modern educational atmosphere and inadequate background support. They need additional support. Although each district has about 8 to 12 Government Degree Colleges and they are working as total individual entities. Pooling and sharing of resources will benefit students of all colleges’ especially rural colleges. Therefore, the Government Degree Colleges in each district, were networked with a select government college in the district, called the District Resource Centre (DRC). Year long activities are planned and implemented by the colleges of the district under the DRC for the benefit of students in the subject and general areas. The DRCs are expected to tentatively compensate some of the disadvantages faced by the students of all colleges, especially the rural colleges. The main Objectives of the DRC include: Identifying the subject and student needs and shortages Pooling and sharing the human resources as well as material resources for the benefit of all students, especially the rural students District-level seminars, workshops etc. for the teachers for improving their awareness and skills in teaching A variety of district-level regular programmes ,workshops and summer programmes for students from all the colleges of the district, in areas such as subjects, skills, career, employment etc Strengthening the existing infrastructural, material and human resources Government College [A], Rajamahendravaram has been identified as a potential centre from East Godavari District to meet the above mentioned objectives and a District Resource Centre has been established and working effectively since its inception in 2008.

4. Jawahar Knowledge Centre:
Jawahar Knowledge Center (JKC) was established in December, 2005 in the college. It is one of the 11 JKCs established by the Commissionerate of collegiate Education in selected Government Degree Colleges across the state. Since then, it has been making rapid strides in imparting training in industry oriented skills and providing placements drives to the students of the college in particular and students of East Godavari District, in general.
Need for JKCs:
• Colleges at Undergraduate level have little scope for campus recruitments. Consequently, even the best of the candidates from remote areas are getting deprived of a chance to get into the established Institutions/ Companies.
• Majority of the students are weak in Soft Skills and Communication Skills that the Industries/ Companies need and these can be imparted well in a good environment.
Concept of JKC:
The concept behind establishment of JKCs in Government Degree Colleges in the State is to enhance the employment potentials of the young graduates by imparting Communication Skills, Soft Skills, Analytical Skills & Technical Skills.

Key Features:
The unique feature of JKCs is its Training Programme designed to help the students to grow as a professional. The training aims at sharpening the competencies of the students and giving them right inputs on Technology and Soft Skills. The training programme shapes final year students in Degree Colleges as Employable Graduates. This training is offered by trained GEM and Mentors.

Mode of Learning in JKC:
The learning in JKC is a joyful experience in the life of the trainees. It is completely different from conventional class-room learning where it is teacher centered. The unique feature of imparting skills in JKC is through “Student centered and Activity Oriented Learning”, in which the students are encouraged to participate in all activities such as Role Plays, Pair works, Name Games, Group Discussions, etc. This mode of learning removes boredom and makes the students more active and skillful.

Capacity Building of Mentors:
At the JKC, the training is imparted by specially qualified and competent MENTORS who interact and participate along with the students in the process of learning. 5 Mentors are appointed for every JKC - 3 GEMs to teach ECS and 2 Full-time mentors to teach Technical Skills, Aptitude and Reasoning.
Other Highlights of the JKC, Govt. College (A), Rajamahendravaram:
1. Nodal JKC for East Godavari District:
• The JKC, Govt. College (A), Rajamahendravaram has been elevated as Nodal JKC to supervise and coordinate the activities of 12 other JKC Extension centres in Government Degree Colleges, 11 centres in aided and un-aided Degree Colleges sanctioned in East Godavari District by the CCE.
• As a Nodal Centre, this JKC conducted a ‘One Day Workshop’ for the Principals, JKC Coordinators and Mentors working in JKC Extension centres on 12.12.2007.
• From 11-17 April, 2011, a training programme for State Full-time Mentors was conducted by the Commissionerate of Collegiate Education at Nodal JKC, Govt. College (A), Rajamahendravaram. The Workshop focused on training and administrative aspects of JKCs and efforts put in for their efficient functioning.
• The Nodal JKC, Govt. College (A), Rajamahendravaram liaisons between the CCE and the JKC extension centres in the district.
2. Collaboration with Adikavi Nannaya University and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University:
• The JKC, Govt. College (A), Rajamahendravaram entered into an agreement with Adikavi Nannaya University (AKNU), Rajamahendravaram As part of this, it is agreed upon to share mutual resources available in each organization for the benefit of the students of JKC and AKNU.
• 60 students of AKNU also underwent training in this JKC.
• JKC, Rajamahendravaram and Regional Centre of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University, Rajamahendravaram also entered into an MOU according to which, the II year and Final year Degree students of the Dr.BRAOU will be imparted training in Communication Skills, Soft Skills and Technical Skills by the JKC, Rajamahendravaram.
3. Extension Services:
In addition to the regular training programmes to the Degree students of the College, the JKC, Govt. College (A) is offering extension services, some of which are given below:
• Conducted a One-month Spoken English course to the P.G. students during September-October 2006.

• Conducted Professional Aptitude Council Examinations in the College in collaboration with PAC.
• Recruited “Data Entry Operators” on behalf of the A.P. Housing Corporation.
• District Coordination for “Certificate Course on Soft Skills” conducted by the CCE during November-January 2007.
• Conducted Inter-Collegiate Quiz Competitions for Degree students of various Degree Colleges in Rajamahendravaram Town.
• Conducted a One –Week HARDWARE Training Programme for JKC students.
• From April 2011 to June 2011, the Hansa Solutions India (P) Ltd., Hyderabad sponsored Training Camp to the 50 of the JKC students of five Government Degree Colleges in East Godavari District viz., Govt. College (A), Rajamahendravaram; GDCs at Ravulapalem, Kothapeta, Jaggampeta and Seethanagaram. Under the sponsorship, they paid the JKC training fee, provided lunch and donated Study Material and GK books to the students, paid conveyance charges from their places.
Success Stories of JKC, Rajamahendravaram:
• JKC, Rajamahendravaram has trained about 2389 students through (31) batches upto August 2012. Out of them, 1282 students got placements in various reputed Multi National Software Companies such as Infosys, WIPRO, MahindraSatyam, Syntel, Genpact, etc., to name a few. Some students got jobs in Banking and Insurance Companies like ICICI, Fullerton, Shriram Life Insurance Company, etc.
• Many students who underwent the JKC training succeeded in various academic competitive examinations such as ICET and are now pursuing their Post Graduation courses in various Universities and Colleges.
• Under JKC-BET, the students also are trained for Bnking Entrance Examinations conducted by IBPS.
• Some students fared well in Public Sector job oriented competitive examinations such as Railway Recruitment Board Exams, Banking exams, Staff Selection Commission, etc.

JKC, Rajamahendravaram is blossoming into an “Employment Generation Centre” and forging ahead to create a Knowledge Society as envisioned by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. With the support of the visionary Principal, Dr.Ch. Masthanaiah and the CCE at the helm of affairs, this will flourish into a “Centre of Excellence” and the light the faces of young minds studying in the College and their parents with bright smiles.
5. Career Guidance & Counselling Cell:
A Career Guidance Cell is established on the campus to guide the students & bring the career opportunities to the notice of the students. The Placement Officer guides the students to appear for the campus interviews.
6. Women Empowerment Cell:
Women constitute more than half of our country's population. The Govt. College (A), Rajamahendravaram is no exception having nearly 1500 girl students both in UG and PG courses. Hence to protect and safeguard the rights of girl students and to bring about the advancement, and to empower them, "WOMEN EMPOWERMENT CELL" was instituted on 3-03-2010 under the chairmanship of Dr.G.S.Moses, Principal.. All the women members of the teaching and non-teaching staff constitute the members of the committee. To boost the morale of the girl students, the committee conducts various activities. The activities include: Celebration of International Women’s Day; Observation of International Girl child Day; felicitation of distinguished women members of the Society and conducting competitions among the girl students on different issues. For the benefit of girl students, separate waiting rooms also have been provided for them both in Science and Arts blocks.

7. Scholarships & Prizes
The Govt. College (A), Rajamahendravaram, offers various scholarships to the students who excel in their Academics.
Prizes under Academic Festival:
As per the Orders of the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, the College identified and felicitated the Final year students who stood in the first position subject wise and Group wise.
Other Scholarships & Prizes:
1. Subrahmanyam Ayyar Endowment Fund:
This prize is to be awarded to III year B.A.Special English student who gets highest percentage of marks and whose conduct is good (Total marks of all the subjects will be considered).
2. Poor Scholars fund:
This scholarship shall be awarded to III year Degree (BA/ B.Sc./B.Com) student who secures highest marks in II year Exams and whose parent’s income does not exceed Rs.12,000/- per annum.
3. Fazullah’s Scholarship Endowment Fund:
This scholarship shall be awarded to a Muslim Student of B.Sc. Cass who secures maximum marks in II year Exams and whose parents’ income does not exceed Rs.12,000/- per annum.
4. Kokkonda Rajagopala Rao Scholarship Endowment Fund:
This scholarship shall be awarded to III year Degree (B.A./ B.Com./B.Sc. ) Brahmin student who secures maximum marks in the II year Degree Exams and whose parental income does not exceed Rs.12,000/-.
5. The Dharwada Venkata Krishna Rao Scholarship and Endowment Fund:
The Scholarship shall be awarded to a student of II year degree class who secures highest marks in the I year Degree Examination and whose parental income does not exceed

Rs.12,000/-. This shall continue for III year, if the student continues his studies in this college.
6. Nori Veeranna Memorial Prize:
This shall be awarded to a student of 2nd year Degree class on the basis of maximum marks obtained in 1st year Degree.
7. The Dr. Gurumurthy Co-op. Endowment Prize:
This shall be awarded to two students of 3rd year Degree class by conducting an Essay Writing Competition on Co-operation and Rural upliftment (I&II prizes are distributed in the ratio of 3:2 respectively.)
8. S.V. Appalacharyulu Memorial Endowment Fund:
This shall be awarded to a student of III year Degree class who secures maximum marks in II year Sanskrit.
9. Manchiraju Lakshmi Venkataramana Murthy Prize:
This shall be awarded to a student of this College who secures the highest marks in the III year Examination in the M.P.C. group.
10. Koti Janikamma Poor Sanskrit Student Scholarship:
This shall be awarded to a poor deserving Madhwa Brahmin student of III year Exam and whose parental income is less than 12,000/- per annum.
11. The Meda Radha Krishna Memorial Prize:
This prize shall be awarded to a non-Brahmin student of III year B.Sc. class with Physics as one subject and who secures maximum aggregate marks in group subject put together in 3 years.
12. The Kotipalli Janakamma Scholarship:
This shall be awarded to a poor, deserving 1st year Degree student who belongs to Madhwa Brahmin Community and whose parental income does not exceed Rs.12,000/- and who secures maximum marks in Intermediate Examination.
13. Sriman Maha Mahopadhyaya Kalluri Venkata Rama Sastry Memorial Prize:

This shallbe awarded to a student who gets the highest number of marks in the aggregate at B.A. Degree Examination.
14. Centenary Merit Awards:
The fund shall be called ‘Rajamahendravaram College Centenary Merit Awards Fund”.
Merit awards shall be awarded every year in cash to each of the student who scores the highest marks among the student of this college in the March or April University Examinations of the previous year in the following subjects.
English, Telugu (under Part-1), History, Politics, Economics, Sociology, Philosophy, Commerce, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Geology, Psychology (II Hindi & Sanskrit) Part. In addition one award is for the student who is declared, by the Principal, as the best in Physical Education.
15. Smt. Veera Ghatta Suramma Scholarship:
This shall be awarded to the 1 year Degree student who secures the highest marks in Sanskrit in his/her Intermediate examination.
16. The N.K. Venkatesam Sri Mark Hunter Memorial Prize:
This shall be awarded to a III year B.A. Student who secures the highest No. of marks in Part-1 English at the second year Degree Examination.
17. Tatavarthy Sree Rama Murthy Memorial Prize:
The prize will be given to the student who scored in highest total marks in I & II years put together in B.Com. course (including languages). The student must have got in 75% attendance and pass in first attempt.
18. Sri Bulusu Venkateswarlu Endowment Prize:
The prize will be given to the student who secures highest marks in B.Sc. Physics upto 3rd Semester.
19. Sripada Suramma Endowment Prize:
The prize will be given to the student who secures highest marks in M.Sc. Chemistry & B.Sc. Chemistry.
20. Thirumala Peda Bhushani Venkata Narasimhacharyulu Endowment Prize:
The prize will be given to the student who secures highest marks in III B,A. Geography subject in 4th & 5th semesters.

This shall be awarded to a student who is admitted into I year Degree Class and who secures highest marks in Intermediate class among all the students admitted in this college.
27. Damerla Venkata Rao Memorial Prize:
This shall be awarded to III year B.A. Degree student with History as one subject and who secures the highest marks in the I and II year History Examinations put together (Rs.444/-)
28. Mahidhara Jaganmohan Rao and Sitadevi Endowment Prize:
This shall be awarded to a student who secures maximum marks in the III year B.A. Degree Examination.
