Summer Institute at Gilmour Academy is designed to help prepare students for the next academic year. Students will have the opportunity to sharpen their skills, develop new talents or nurture their creativity. From summer math and science courses to enhancing study skills to LEGO® league
robotics, our classes are designed to spark students’ personal interests and hone their skills.
We currently offer courses for Gilmour school credit and enrichment. Students do not have be enrolled at
Gilmour Academy to attend these courses. All course information and pricing is provided on the following pages.

Credit Courses
GeometryIn this course students will analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes, develop mathematical arguments about a variety of geometric relationships, describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry, apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations. Students will receive credit for this course and the grade will be averaged into the GPA. Attendance is mandatory and missing more than one class may result in forfeiting credit for the course.
ChemistryThis is an introductory course in which the study of the fundamental properties of matter provides the foundation for the development of both qualitative and quantitative models of chemical systems. The course includes an examination of atomic and molecular structure, chemical reactions, periodicity, the behavior of gases, bonding, solution chemistry, equilibrium, thermo-chemistry, acids & bases, oxidation/reduction and electrochemistry. Laboratory work and related problem-solving exercises are integrated into most aspects of the coursework. This course provides students with an excellent foundation for understanding the molecular aspects of biology. Students will receive credit for this course and the grade will be averaged into the GPA. Attendance is mandatory and missing more than one class may result in forfeiting credit for the course.

Enrichment Courses
LEGO®League Robotics Introductory Engineering and ProgrammingThe LEGO® robotics course offers students the opportunity to learn introductory programming skills while building and redesigning a robot to do challenging tasks. Students will also build their analytical, engineering design and communication skills. This course is designed to stand alone as a science application course or continue during the school year when the students will be able to join a team and compete against other schools.
Summer Study Skills WorkshopThis class is designed to hone study skills necessary for success in the transition to high school. Students will examine their learning styles and develop skills in time management, organization, note-taking, studying and test taking. The course will also explore the importance of critical thinking, problem-solving and active reading.
