ST. PAUL’S LUTHERAN CHURCH AND
SCHOOL
DES PERES, MISSOURI
Prayer for a New Worker in the Church
Lord of the Church, our prayers to You
We offer by Your grace,
To bless the Word Your servant here
Will bring us in this place.
We pray the Spirit’s guidance on
The Kingdom work that’s done
In bringing many souls to hear
The deeds of Your own Son.
For we would see our Jesus Christ
In ev’ry sermon giv’n,
And always hear that message well:
The only Way to heav’n.
O may we ever give support
To those, who, in Your name,
Go forth with heav’nly zeal and love
His message to proclaim.
O Triune God, to You we pray
The ministry to bless
That many more may hear Your Word
And Jesus Christ confess.

Silent Prayer before Worship
Almighty and gracious God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, You have commanded us to pray that You
would send forth laborers into Your harvest. Of Your infinite mercy give us teachers and ministers of Your
Word who truly fulfill Your command and preach nothing contrary to Your holy Word. Grant that we, being
warned, instructed, nurtured, comforted, and strengthened by Your holy Word, may do those things which are
well pleasing to You and profitable for our salvation; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. LSB 306

T DIVINE SERVICE—SETTING ONE T
Prelude “Rejoice, O Pilgrim Throng” Charles W. Ore
Welcome! We greet you in the name of Jesus Christ! We are glad that you are worshiping with
us this morning!
Attendance Cards are available in the pew racks. Guests and members, please fill one out and
indicate any way in which the people of St. Paul’s might be of service to you. As the offerings are
received, pass to the center aisle. The Pastors look forward to meeting you after the service.
Children’s Worship materials are available on the landing outside Fellowship Hall. A Nursery is
available on the lower level, an usher can direct you.
The celebration of the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ as He gives us His body and blood with
bread and wine in the sacrament occurs every weekend at St. Paul’s, either in the sanctuary
service or the service in the North Campus gym. Anyone who wishes to commune here for the
first time and who is not a member of St. Paul’s or a congregation of The Lutheran Church-
Missouri Synod, is asked to speak with one of the Pastors before the service.
For those communing, examine yourself with these questions: Do I believe I am a sinner and
am I sorry for my sins? Do I believe Christ’s true body and blood to be present in the Lord’s
Supper for the forgiveness of sins? Do I earnestly intend with the help of God to amend my sinful
life?
Gluten-free wafers are available; please indicate your need to the Pastor. Non-alcoholic wine is
available in the center of each tray.
The symbol on the cover is designed to honor the Office of the Public Ministry. The purpose of the
ministry is to proclaim the message of salvation in Christ, through the Word and Sacraments, as
shown by the chalice, host, and shell on the Bible, superimposed on the Cross. The stole and the
shepherd’s crook symbolize that a pastor is a servant of God and a shepherd of God’s people.

Invocation Matthew 28:19b; [18:20]
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
Exhortation 1 John 1:8–9
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us
from all unrighteousness.
Confession of Sins and Absolution
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned
against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left
undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as
ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son,
Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in
Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your
sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your
sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. [John 20:19–23]
C Amen.

Service of the Word
Salutation and Collect of the Day
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.
P Let us pray.
Lord of all power and might, author and giver of all good things, graft into our hearts the love of
Your name and nourish us with all goodness that we may love and serve our neighbor; through Jesus
Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever.
C Amen.
Old Testament Reading 1 Kings 19:9b-21
Behold, the word of the LORD came to [Elijah], and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken
Your covenant, thrown down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am
left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And He said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the
LORD.”
And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the
rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the
LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And
after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and
went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.
And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been
very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken Your covenant,
thrown down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they
seek my life, to take it away.”
And the LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive,
you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king
over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.
And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from
the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that
have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of
oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. And
he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will
follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” And he returned from
following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the
oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Choral Gradual Richard Hillert
And His gifts were that some should be apostles, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the
work of ministry for the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and of
the knowledge of the Son of God. Ephesians 4:11-13

Epistle Galatians 5:1, 13-25
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. …
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh,
but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your
neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by
one another.
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh
are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each
other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not
under the law.
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity,
strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like
these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of
God.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-
control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh
with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
P This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Choral Verse “O Lord, I Love the Habitation of Your House” Mark Bender
O Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells.
Forever, O Lord, Your Word is firmly set in the heavens.
Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 26:8; 119:89, 105
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
Holy Gospel Luke 9:51-62
P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the ninth chapter.
C (Sung) Glory to You, O Lord.
When the days drew near for [Jesus] to be taken up, He set His face to go to Jerusalem. And He sent
messengers ahead of Him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for
Him. But the people did not receive Him, because His face was set toward Jerusalem. And when His
disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do You want us to tell fire to come down from heaven
and consume them?” But He turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village.
As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” And
Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to
lay His head.” To another He said, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the
kingdom of God.” Yet another said, “I will follow You, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my
home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of
God.”
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C (Sung) Praise to You, O Christ.

Hymn of the Day “Send, O Lord, Your Holy Spirit” LSB 681
Send, O Lord, Your Holy Spirit On Your servant now, we pray;
Let him prove a faithful shepherd That no lamb be led astray.
Your pure teaching to proclaim, To extol Your holy name,
And to feed Your lambs, dear Savior, Make his aim and sole endeavor.
You, O Lord, Yourself have called him For Your precious lambs to care;
But to prosper in his calling, He the Spirit’s gifts must share.
Give him wisdom from above, Fill his heart with holy love;
In his weakness, Lord, be near him, In his prayers, Good Shepherd, hear him.
Help, Lord Jesus, help him nourish All our children with Your Word
That in fervant love they serve You Till in heav’n their song is heard.
Boundless blessings, Lord, bestow On his faithful toil below
Till by grace to him be given His reward, the crown of heaven.
Sermon “Freedom Proclaimer” – Galatians 5:13 Nicene Creed LSB 175
C I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day
overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting
life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify
Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Hymns “God of the Prophets, Bless the Prophets’ Son” LSB 682
1 God of the prophets, bless the prophets’ sons; Elijah’s mantle o’er Elisha cast.
Each age its solemn task may claim but once; Make each one nobler, stronger than the last.
2 Anoint them prophets, men who are intent To be Your witnesses in word and deed,
Their hearts aflame, their lips made eloquent, Their eyes awake to ev’ry human need.
3 Anoint them priests, strong intercessors they, For pardon and for love and hope and peace,
That, through their pleading, guilty sinners may Find Jesus’ mercy and from sin release.
4 Anoint them kings, yes, kingly kings, O Lord. Anoint them with the Spirit of Your Son.
Theirs not a jeweled crown, a bloodstained sword; Theirs, by sweet love, for Christ a kingdom won.
5 Make them apostles, heralds of Your cross; Forth let them go to tell the world of grace.
Inspired by You, may they count all but loss And stand at last with joy before Your face.
“What Wondrous Love Is This” LSB 543
1 What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this That caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, To bear the dreadful curse for my soul!
2 When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, When I was sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down Beneath God’s righteous frown,
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul, for my soul, Christ laid aside His crown for my soul.
3 To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing; To God and to the Lamb I will sing;
To God and to the Lamb, Who is the great I AM,
While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing, While millions join the theme, I will sing.
4 And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on; And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on.
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing His love for me,
And through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, And through eternity I’ll sing on.

All: Thou who the night in prayer didst spend And then didst Thine apostles send
And bidd’st us pray the harvest’s Lord To send forth sowers of Thy Word,
Hear and Thy chosen servants bless With sevenfold gifts of holiness.

Give grace to feed with wholesome food The sheep and lambs bought by Thy blood,
To tend Thy flock, and thus to prove How dearly they the Shepherd love.
Choir: Oh, may Thy people faithful be And in Thy pastors honor Thee
And with them work and for them pray And gladly Thee in them obey,
Receive the prophet of the Lord And gain the prophet’s own reward!
All: So may we when our work is done Together stand before Thy throne
And joyful hearts and voices raise In one united song of praise,
With all the bright celestial host, To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Christopher Wordsworth
Choir: Amen.

KEVIN CRAIG THOMSON
Kevin, son of Ian and Jackie Thomson, was born in Peoria,
Illinois on July 24, 1990. His family also includes a younger
sister, Stephanie. As a family they have moved a few times in
both Illinois and Wisconsin. Currently his family lives in
Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, which is a northwest suburb of
Milwaukee.
After graduating high school, Kevin attended Concordia
University Chicago. Prior to attending college it was the
intent that he pursue the pastoral ministry in the future.
However, Kevin double majored in Sociology and
Theological Languages, with a minor in Spanish, to broaden
his academics before Seminary. During his time at Concordia
University Kevin met his wife, Jordan (née Scifres). Jordan and Kevin were both very active on campus at
Concordia. Kevin was involved with the soccer team, youth ministry programs, and campus jobs. Jordan was
involved with volleyball, youth ministry programs, and other campus activities.
The summer after Kevin graduated from Concordia University, he married Jordan in Greenwood, Indiana. Jordan
is from Greenwood, an Indianapolis suburb, and much of her family is from Indiana. They were married on July
14, 2012, and then moved to Concordia Seminary St. Louis that summer for Kevin to begin his coursework. After
two years of campus studies, Kevin served his vicarage in Warner Robins, Georgia before returning for his final
year of campus coursework. While at the Seminary, Kevin was involved with the soccer team, grounds crew, and
other campus activities.
In their final year at the Seminary Kevin and Jordan were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. Charlotte Mae
Thomson was born on December 2, 2015. All three of the Thomsons are eager to transition from the Seminary to
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Kevin and Jordan will temporarily be renting a house in Overland, Missouri as they
continue to house-hunt for a permanent house to purchase closer to St. Paul’s.

This weekend’s purpose is to assist people in time of need and is the annual fundraising drive for Social Ministry.
Social Ministry is not included in the church budget, so the money collected is their only source of income. Social
Ministry appreciates those members who regularly bring the “yellow bags” back filled with food, but more is
needed than food. Funds are necessary to help people with problems other than hunger. If you forgot your special
envelope today, please bring it any weekend with your gift for Social Ministry. Please find it in your hearts to

Thank You
Dear St. Paul’s Friends,
“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of
your partnership in the Gospel.” Philippians 1:3-5
Just saying thank you does not seem adequate for my incredible retirement celebration. It was an amazing and
unforgettable day. A very special thank you to the committee for all of their hard work. It is very much
appreciated. Thank you for your kind words, your cards, and your gifts. I look forward to what God has planned
in this next stage of my life. To quote the class motto of this year’s eighth grade class: “We don’t know what the
future holds but we know Who holds the future.” Thank you again for your kindness and generosity. It has all
been a bit overwhelming, but a very good kind of overwhelming.
God bless you!

From Our Life Team ...
“Christianity isn’t decorative. God is for real life, modeling in Jesus what perfect forgiveness looks like. As long
as your relationship doesn’t risk your safety or your sanity, it’s probably better to dig in right where you are.
Some waste a lifetime hunting for contentment, running with resentment from this person to that, searching for
the human equivalent of a pot of gold; but quick hitches aren’t quick fixes. Rainbows come after storms. So, build
up your partner, laugh together, be vulnerable, and let the Spirit sculpt you into a better self for that someone.”
