From the Principal Dear Parents/Caregivers,
I would like to take this
opportunity to thank you on
your outstanding efforts and
support to organise your
child/children to be ready
for their first day and week
of our college year. As
Principal of Ocean View College I walked
throughout the college grounds on the first
day for Reception to Year 9 students on the
Tuesday and Year 10 to 12 students on the
Wednesday morning. I, like many other
parents, staff and students felt extremely
proud of the way we looked and presented
ourselves for the beginning of 2014.
In particular, I thank all parents, caregivers
and students on their embrace of the “Black
Shoe” policy at our college. Statistics given
to me indicated 99% of Reception to Year
12 students started this year in their new
black shoes and the 1% who hadn’t were
getting them by the beginning of Week 2.
In this 2014 transition year of old to new
uniform I also commend everyone in their
endeavours to maintain consistency. Yes,
the old existing uniform still looks good,
but, the new uniform looks great!
With significant change there are always
some issues that arise that need to be dealt
with. Our new Uniform supplier “Southern
School Wear” has had a delay on delivery
of:
Newly designed girls’ summer dresses,
Boys charcoal grey summer shorts,
Reception to Year 5 summer hats.
I have been assured that new stock will be
delivered and become available to our new
Uniform Shop ASAP with minimal
disruption to the organisation of our
college. Certainly the transition period has
helped maintain a consistency of uniform
presentation so far.
I continue to ask all parents/caregivers,
students and staff to maintain a consistent
focus on uniform at our college. As we
continue to develop outstanding academic
and extra-curricula achievement throughout
our college we must also be mindful of the
way we present on a daily basis within our
college community and in the wider global
community we now operate in.
UNIFORM GUIDELINES 2014
As from the beginning of 2014, Ocean
View College is working in partnership
with our new uniform supplier “Southern
School Wear”. This company has won the
tender to supply high quality garments at
competitive prices, supporting the needs of
our students and the families who purchase
the product. The expectation is to bring a
new line of uniform that further strengthens
the image of our students, …….a fresher,
more competitive edge to the way we look
both within the local community and the
broader global community we are now
operating in.
A brief summary of what to expect:
In 2014 ALL students are required to
wear black shoes as from the beginning
of the year. This includes a range of
choices from black leather shoes, black
Vans or black sandshoes…….they must
be all black, labels of different colours
will need to be covered with black
permanent texta or the like (example
photos of black shoes have been shown
in newsletters throughout last year).
2014 is a “transitional year” from the
existing style of college uniform to a
uniform that will be compulsory in
2015.
A guideline of uniform expectations and
new lines of uniform available to purchase:

A good start to the day!

charity supporters, KICK START
FOR KIDS, Ocean View College will
resume The Breakfast Club every
school morning from 7:50AM to
8:30AM held outside the Flexible
Learning Centre. All students and
families are welcomed. This program is
driven by students and volunteers, if
you have a spare 20 minutes a week,
please come join our fun team.
JUNIOR SCHOOL REPORT Welcome back everyone! What a wonderful
start to the year we have had! Welcome to
our new staff: Luke Jenkins is teaching all
of our R-5 classes for PE, Visual Arts and
Social Learning. He is a great addition to
the Junior School team and the students are
really enjoying his lessons. Ellie Ventrice is
teaching in J13 on Fridays when Ms
Darwin has her day off. She is also teaching
a Year 6/7 class on Monday and Tuesday so
we are fortunate to have such a versatile
teacher on our staff. We also welcome two
students teachers this term: Emma Nelson,
who is working with Miss Townley and
Milena Samardzya who is working with
Miss Kozned. The students are very settled
and happy, creating a relaxed, positive
feeling in the College. I’d like to especially
welcome our new 2014 students to the
Junior School: Christopher, Tristan, Gavin,
Justin, Kailan, Taylah, Kevin, Jamie,
Anastasia, Jye, Darcy, Jaime, Brodie,
Matthew, Lucas, Andrew and Damon. They
all appear to be enjoying life at O.V.C.
As a reward for the excellent behaviour of
students in week 1, we all celebrated with
ice-blocks on the oval last Friday.
As most of you would now be aware, Nola
Tsoulakis has taken on the role of Principal
at Pennington Junior Primary School. The
position is for at least 6 months, but may
extend to twelve months. It was a difficult
decision for Nola as she has such strong ties
to our College, but we congratulate her on
the appointment and look forward to her
return.

Thank you and congratulations on the
support you have given us in regard to
uniforms, our students look so smart in
their black shoes and new uniforms. We
have had a delay in the delivery of our hats,
so students have been able to wear any hat
until the official ones arrive. Once they do,
all Junior School students will need to wear
the correct hat. Can you also please make
sure that students are wearing plain white
socks?
Music before school has become very
popular…it is a much more settled and
calming way for students, staff and parents
to begin the day. We now begin the music
at 8:30am and when the green light sign
goes up (and the musical bells are played)
at 8:40am students can move into classes.
We also plan to have music playing at
lunchtimes.
Adelaide West volunteers – we had a
meeting this week and it was wonderful to
see the large number of students who are
volunteering to help at Adelaide West
Special Education Centre during their
lunchtimes. They will receive special
training about their role next week and we
hope to begin ASAP.
Free Bread – Thanks to Paula and Donna
who have again organised free bread from
Baker’s Delight. This will take place on
Mondays and Fridays in the Flexible
Learning Centre, but please be mindful that
there may sometimes be classes in there.
You can enter from the door facing the
Hub.
Parent Group – Yes! It’s continuing and
we’d like to see some new faces. Tuesday
at 9.00am in the Hub. Everyone is
welcome!
Assemblies Staff and students love seeing
people in the audience for our assemblies,
so please try to come along. This term our
assemblies will be held on Tuesdays at
1.30pm in weeks 3, 6 and 9, again in the
Flexible Learning Centre. Mrs. Filsell’s
class will be presenting the first one.
Swimming – advanced notice that
swimming for Reception, Year 1 and Year
2 students will be in WEEK 8 THIS TERM.
Notes will be distributed shortly so you
have plenty of time to prepare. Years 3 /4/5
swimming will take place later this year.
Road Crossing – Our new monitors are
being trained on the 19th February so staff
members are supervising the crossing by
themselves at the moment. Many have
reported that both students and parents are
not using the crossing, choosing to cross the
road at the roundabout instead. This is
extremely dangerous and there have
recently been some ‘near misses’. Please
use the crossing and encourage your
children to do the same.
Bucket Filling – have your children
mentioned this great program to you? If not,
ask them about it. Last week I went into
every class and talked about bucket filling.
Everyone carries an invisible bucket in
which we keep our feelings about
ourselves. When our buckets are full we are
happy, when they are empty we are sad.
Students discuss ways they can fill their
own buckets and those of others. We also
discuss “bucket dipping”, which occurs
when we do or say mean things to others.
During this year we are encouraging,
reminding and recognising everyone’s
efforts to be bucket fillers at home, school
and everywhere they go.
Here is a brief outline of how some of our
Junior School classes have started the year:
J12 (Mrs Kozned) – Our class has started
2014 in a very positive way. The children
come in eagerly and settle quickly and
quietly on the floor in a circle, ready to start
the day. The older children are helping the
younger ones by being their ‘Big Buddies’.
Their help has been invaluable. Our theme
this term is ‘Me, My Family, My
Community, My Country’. If you know any
community workers (eg. Nurses, Fire-
fighters, Police etc.) who could come to talk
about their careers, please let me know.

J13 (Ms Darwin) - Our class has had an
amazing start to 2014. We are getting to
know each other’s strengths and goals for
the year. The children are excited about
having their own pencil cases and feel very
grownup.
J15 (Miss Turner)-Has settled beautifully.
Students are receiving lots of rewards and
happy steps as they learn the rules and
routines of the class. This is helping them
prepare for some hard work ahead!!
J1 (Mrs Filsell) - The children have settled
quickly into class routines. We are taking
on responsibility for the flags, recycling
(both paper and cans) and looking after the
topiary pine tree. We have started with the
topics, Chinese New Year and the Winter
Olympics.
J11 ( Miss Edwards) - J11 has kicked off
the year with a flying start!! We have been
busy making new friends and learning
about why it is important to come to school.
The children have been working very hard
and have settled in well.
Great work J11.

have ingenious communicating techniques.
Well, I am definitely the right person for
this job! Ocean View College would like to
acknowledge our new families and students
who have just started their first school year
or have come from other schools and
places.
I am thrilled to return in the position of
Acting Junior School Counsellor

towards their learning and personal
development.
Working together with teachers is one of
my many services I provide to assist in
developing programs which are meaningful
and purposeful to support students with
individual or behavioural needs, to improve
and increase student achievement.
Understanding and supporting the concerns
of parents and carers is one of my many
hats. Confidentially, I am able to consult
with you or guide you toward a suitable
service. I invite you to come and have a
chat, as many of you know I’m always up

The Women’s and

that some students at
our College have
continued to design and
make soft toys for sick
children. I collected the
toys made by Year 9 Textiles students
throughout 2013 and delivered them to the
Foundation, who will distribute them to
children and families who experience
distressing or prolonged stay in the
Women’s Children’s Hospital.
The WCH Foundation has sent a letter of
