Foreword by Sara Turner Proprietor of Ellenden Farm Shop
At Ellenden farm shop we pride ourselves in supporting the objectives of Transition Evesham Vale. My husband David and I moved to Ellenden Farm with our young family in May 2007. Having been involved in livestock and arable farming all his life, David is passionate about managing the land sustainably and utilizing it to its full potential. We aim to continue farming at Harvington, growing and producing as much as possible to sell through the shop.
All our beef and lamb is home-reared, meaning minimal carbon footprint and livestock stress levels. We grow our own asparagus, apples, plums andpurple-sprouting broccoli, often picked the day of purchase. We sell free range eggs produced by happy healthy hens that can be viewed from the roadside.
We support small independent local producers. For example Simply Seasonal produce jam and chutney using only local (in season) ingredients. Spot Loggin produce ice cream from their own organic dairy herd in Bretforton, and Graham Mullen supplies us with honey from his bees in the Lenches.
I am astounded by the amount of food the supermarkets waste, we reduce this factor by turning tired vegetables into soup. Sian Simpson from Sherrifs Lench collects what we have to offer weekly and returns with delicious home-made soup full of local, seasonal ingredients.
A high point of our year is our summer Open Day, this year it’s Sunday July 15th. It’s a free day out where we invite the general public onto the farm, the prime objective being to allow people to see for themselves where food comes from and the processes it goes through before arriving on their plate. You can meet our animals, watch farm machinery in action, take a tractor and trailer ride around the land and sample in our tasting marquee the very best local produce Evesham has to offer. This is a real community event in Harvington, and only happens because of the support of our suppliers and friends from around the Vale and beyond. Why not come along and see for yourself?

FOOD WASTE – “A WORLDWIDE SCANDAL”.
UK households waste around £12 billion worth every year, amounting to £50 forevery average family with children. It must come from somewhere!
Here are some awkward questions:-
Did you eat all the Christmas turkey? What happens to left-over vegetables in your house?
Do your family leave food on their plates? In the supermarket, do you pick up things that “sound nice”?
Do you need to do a regular fridge throw-out?
Some ways to change any wasteful answers:-
Use your freezer.Keep the fridge below -5˚C.
Learn some (more) ‘left-overs’ recipes.Let the family serve themselves, or give them less and see what happens.
Plan your meals, make shopping lists, don’t buy anything extra.
Note the following about dates on food:-‘Sell by’ or ‘Display until’ – mostly ignore, they are guidance for retailers.
‘Best before’ – it’s usable, but possibly reduced in quality.‘Use by’ – observe, or if say two days over trust your own taste and smell!
Go to lovefoodhatewaste.com for more help.
Why does it matter?Apart from saving money (see above), isn’t it an easy way to help the world
feed itself? It’s even been said that, if the waste problem were tackled, the world could stop worrying about feeding our growing population.
Stopping food waste in the UK would equal, in fuel use, taking 1 in 4 cars off the road.

Local Restaurants and Local Food
Many local restaurants and pubs claim to be using local food. We wrote to nearly 40 of them, asking if they could say whether 30% of their food came from within 30 miles – a ’30:30’
guideline which we thought was reasonable, given the amount of food produced within 30 miles of Evesham! Only two replied, one being the Evesham Hotel, who said they tried hard to use
local food, but it did vary seasonally over the year and probably some of the time they achieved 30:30 and some of the time not, but they are very committed to ‘local taste and flavour’. None of the others bothered to answer, so do ask when you eat out locally what proportion of the food is
the delicious local stuff from the Vale…..

Transition Evesham Vale is a network of people concerned about the issues of climate change and peak oil. Peak oil is the time when oil production begins to fall, and we need to plan for a different society. Fuel prices have risen and will continue to do so. The future will need to be ‘low carbon’, requiring major changes in the cost and style of food production and distribution. We believe it is vital for people to be buying food locally, growing their own and getting supermarkets to source local food wherever possible. We also support stronger communities in the Vale, more sustainable forms of transport, community energy production and greater sustainability of buildings.
