BackgroundAndre N.H. Bulabula | June 14th, 2019

Africa is a very large continent and training very expensive for the majority of Africans.

Few countries provide IPC degree programs, resulting in high study costs (travelling and accommodation).

Accessibility within and across countries is a major issue.

Given these challenges we had to develop context specific and innovative ways to provide IPC training: IPC Virtual Learning

Solution to Distance and CostAndre N.H. Bulabula | June 14th, 2019

• The classic IPC training is VERY EXPENSIVE for African professionals.

COST

• COST-EFFECTIVE

• Accessible IPC quality solutions

• Covers wider areas

education institutions offering IPC training are FAR FROM COUNTRIES WITH NEEDS

ECHO StructureICAN ECHO

• This is a virtual learning platform at ICAN in collaboration with the Project ECHO / University of New Mexico, USA.

• ICAN ECHO IPC is the first platform to provide IPC expertise through Project ECHO movement in the world.

• Each session will consist of case based learning related to infection prevention and control (IPC) matters, where different spokes will join the Hub via a webcam over the Zoom platform where participants can see each other on line and communicate in real time.

• Best practices in IPC are shared through case-based learning process and peer discussion

Help addressing

emergencies: outbreaks

Wide network of hospitals in

different countries

Knowledge transfer

In DR Congo, ICAN ECHO sessions have

helped the local team

achieve the control of a large

Klebsiella pneumoniae

outbreak in a neonatology unit

Participating countries reported to have

found a space where to share challenges

and find solutions in just an hour session

Growing interest in IPC discussions

Africa wide

Conclusion & Next Steps Andre N.H. Bulabula | June 14th, 2019

Virtual learning is possible in Africa

ICAN ECHO IPC is an opportunity to share knowledge

ICAN VL Hub and Nodes is a major solution providing sustainable IPC degree programs

Preparing for the first Africa wide ICAN virtual learning class in 2021
