Dear Colleagues and Friends As we near the end of 2018 we haveso much to celebrate at ITS Thankyou all for your hard work this year

and I look forward to celebrating with you all FridayDec 14 2018 at noon at the International Housefor our Holiday Celebration and as we recognizeour outstanding students researchers and partnersat the Awards Ceremony ITS faculty staff and students have won severalhonors and awards throughout the year mostrecently though Irsquod also like to congratulate oureight graduate students who were awardedopportunities in the Dwight David EisenhowerTransportation Fellowship Program AbigailCochran Xiao Yun Jayne Chang Ryan LawsStephen Wong Jeremy Halpern Fangyu WuJessica Lazarus and Eugene Vinitsky I am soimpressed with the participation this year and thebroad topics of research that will be representedthrough ITS Berkeley And congratulations to recent alum Cathy Wu forreceiving the Council of University TransportationCenterrsquos (CUTC) Milton Pikarsky Memorial AwardIt is such an honor for her pioneering work anddedication to be recognized as the best Doctoraldissertation in the field of science and technologyin transportation studies this year I would also like to thank all of you who attendedand participated in our Strategic Plan rollout Dec3 We enjoyed a good discussion on the planwhich gave us all a lot to think about I am excitedto see where we are headed as an Institute andwe have a good framework set in place that willhelp us get there We are highlighting our focus oncreating leaders and leading-edge innovations indata science artificial intelligence the sharingeconomy sustainability economic health andsocial good I understand that priorities and goalswill shift over the years but this strategic plan givesus tangible actions that will set our course mdash aswell as some moonshot goals that we will figure outhow to achieve together as we set our goals inmotion It was also a nice opportunity to gather withcolleagues from the different centers and we hopeto plan more opportunities to bring us all togetherand foster more collaboration Another recent opportunity for collaboration wasthe UC Institute of Transportation Studies kick-offevent for a new research initiative focused oninnovative mobility on Nov 30 The day-longinteractive forum brought over 75 UC scholarstogether to identify research priorities for the stateand connect researchers across campuses anddisciplines in the pursuit of innovative mobility The event exceeded expectations withparticipation from the four ITS centers BerkeleyDavis Irvine and UCLA and a strong turnout fromUC campuses at Merced Riverside San Diegoand Santa Cruz For those that were able to attendfrom UC Berkeley thank you for spending the daywith us and sharing your unique perspective Andfor those that were unable to join us I invite you toshare your ldquoinnovative mobilityrdquo research ideas withUC ITS via this online form by Dec 21 2018 inpreparation of a draft proposal the UC ITS ispreparing for the State of California I also inviteyou to sign up (via this form) to receive updates onthe UC Innovative Mobility Initiative and ways toget involved

Thank you again for all your hard work this year itreally has made an impact on ITS Berkeley I hopeyou enjoy some time off between the semestersand until next year and TRB Go Bears
