ITS Berkeley Director's Letter View this email in your browser Faculty and staff from ITS Berkeley and its Centers review the ITS Berkeley Strategic Plan at an All Hands Meeting Dec. 4, 2018. Dear Colleagues and Friends, As we near the end of 2018, we have so much to celebrate at ITS! Thank you all for your hard work this year, and I look forward to celebrating with you all Friday, Dec. 14, 2018 at noon at the International House for our Holiday Celebration and as we recognize our outstanding students, researchers and partners at the Awards Ceremony. ITS faculty, staff and students have won several honors and awards throughout the year, most recently though I’d also like to congratulate our eight graduate students who were awarded opportunities in the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program: Abigail Cochran, Xiao Yun "Jayne" Chang, Ryan Laws, Stephen Wong, Jeremy Halpern, Fangyu Wu, Jessica Lazarus, and Eugene Vinitsky. I am so impressed with the participation this year and the broad topics of research that will be represented through ITS Berkeley! And congratulations to recent alum Cathy Wu for receiving the Council of University Transportation Center’s (CUTC) Milton Pikarsky Memorial Award. It is such an honor for her pioneering work and dedication to be recognized as the best Doctoral dissertation in the field of science and technology in transportation studies this year. I would also like to thank all of you who attended and participated in our Strategic Plan rollout Dec. 3. We enjoyed a good discussion on the plan, which gave us all a lot to think about. I am excited to see where we are headed as an Institute, and we have a good framework set in place that will help us get there. We are highlighting our focus on creating leaders and leading-edge innovations in data science, artificial intelligence, the sharing economy, sustainability, economic health, and social good. I understand that priorities and goals will shift over the years, but this strategic plan gives us tangible actions that will set our course — as well as some moonshot goals that we will figure out how to achieve together as we set our goals in motion. It was also a nice opportunity to gather with colleagues from the different centers, and we hope to plan more opportunities to bring us all together and foster more collaboration! Another recent opportunity for collaboration was the UC Institute of Transportation Studies kick-off event for a new research initiative focused on innovative mobility on Nov. 30. The day-long, interactive forum brought over 75 UC scholars together to identify research priorities for the state and connect researchers across campuses and disciplines in the pursuit of innovative mobility. The event exceeded expectations, with participation from the four ITS centers, Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, and UCLA, and a strong turnout from UC campuses at Merced, Riverside, San Diego, and Santa Cruz. For those that were able to attend from UC Berkeley, thank you for spending the day with us and sharing your unique perspective. And for those that were unable to join us, I invite you to share your “innovative mobility” research ideas with UC ITS via this online form, by Dec. 21, 2018 in preparation of a draft proposal the UC ITS is preparing for the State of California. I also invite you to sign up ( via this form) to receive updates on the UC Innovative Mobility Initiative and ways to get involved. Thank you again for all your hard work this year, it really has made an impact on ITS Berkeley! I hope you enjoy some time off between the semesters, and until next year and TRB!
