We have reached the 100th day of school.
Can you believe we are more than half way
through this school year? We are so
grateful for your continued support. As we
approach the end of the year, the focus
will continue to be on rigorous instruction
to prepare our students to be successful.
Continue reading each night and discuss
with your child what they are reading.
Please watch our PTO's Facebook page for
ways in which you can volunteer.

Did you know that EM Holt will soon have a Crossing Guard to direct traffic in the mornings and afternoons? This is a position for which there has been a great need for a long time. Having a full-time traffic director will certainly
help to make morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up less stressful.

Second grade has been busy learning while having a great time. First we celebrated our 11th year decorating tiles with Mad Platter. Every year second graders design, paint, and keep their own personal tile. In December it was fun with socialstudies, reading, and writing with Christmas Around the World. Students rotated through different classrooms and learned some customs and legends from Germany, Mexico, Australia, Israel, and Italy. Just recently, we had the opportunity to visit Cummings High School to watch the play The Princess and the Pea.

Every Friday, the classroom with the best attendance that week gets their win announced
over the intercom and a poster to proudly display outside their classroom door the following
week to show off their great attendance. If there is a tie, then the number of tardies helps
decide the winner. For example, if two classrooms had no students absent all week but one
of them had a student tardy that week, the classroom with 0 absences and 0 tardies is the
winner. In addition to the poster, the winning classroom gets a paper paw print to keep
outside their door the whole school year. At the end of the school year, the classroom with
the most pawprints (the most wins for the year), gets an attenDANCE party! The dance party
for the winning classroom will include music, dancing, snacks, and drinks to celebrate a year
of wonderful attendance.
1st place: Ms. Pickard's class (4 wins)
2nd place: Ms. Coggins and Ms. Dove's are tied (3 wins each)
3rd place: Ms. Jen May's class (2 wins)
Several other classrooms have won once. It's still anybody's game! The winning classroom
will get to attend a dance party with music, food, and fun during the last week of school!
There are many great community resources in Alamance County that come through in times of
need. I’m also thankful for the strong partnership we have with Bellemont United Methodist
Church. Many of our local churches and the EM Holt Volunteer Fire Department have been
gracious when approached with a student or Holt family need. If your family is struggling with
housing, food, electricity, or your child needs clothing or school supplies, please contact me at
the school (336-570-6420). If you’re struggling with your child’s behavior or discipline issues,
contact me. If you’ve lost your job, want to know where to get your G.E.D., take classes, learn a
skill for free, or get help with job applications or resumes, there are resources for that! Call me
and I’ll point you in the right direction. You’re not alone and it’s O.K. to ask for help. Please
check the EM Holt School Social Worker website under Student Support Services for upcoming
community events and resources.

Hello 2016! January is already a faint memory and February is flying by. Your PTO was busy at the end
of 2015 with some successful fundraisers like the Texas Roadhouse Gift Card sale and the Butter Braid
sale, as well as the ever popular Santa Shop. We slowed down a little after the holidays to take a
collective deep breath as we gear up to tackle the rest of the school year.
As you know, the money that has been raised by the PTO is used right here at EM Holt for various
projects. We have worked hard to make sure we are using the money we raise to best meet the needs
of everyone at our school. We have polled some parents and teachers to narrow down a long list of
needs and have decided to direct our focus on the following projects:
Painting K/1 and 2/3 grade hallways. We are hoping to secure paint at a discounted price so
that a team of teacher and parent volunteers can paint these areas of our school that could
use a fresh coat.
Purchasing dictionaries for all 5th grade classrooms. Our 5th graders use dictionaries on almost
a daily basis. Currently, the books they must work with are worn, torn, and battered, and
because they are rather old, they do not contain some words included in their standard
vocabulary lists.
First Responders Appreciation event. We are working with local law enforcement,
firemen/women, EMTs to schedule some assemblies, school visits, and even an appreciation
luncheon for those serving in our communities.
Technology enrichment program. We are investigating a partnership with local college in
which college students would work with our students to begin learning to work with
technology. Purchase of additional technology such as Chromebooks or laptops may be
required.
Installing steps on the football field. The hill near the concession stand is a very unsafe area
during events such as the Fall Festival and Movie Night. We are reaching out to local civic
organizations as well as the carpentry department at Southern High School to develop an
acceptable solution with nominal cost.
Developing an account or partnership with local printing companies to allow school staff to
design and print posters and other materials in a professional manner.
You may notice that many of these projects should not require large amounts of money. We started
with projects that we felt could be accomplished with minimal expense so
that we can continue to save money for a larger project such as an
updated playground. We plan to pursue plans for upgraded playgrounds
and equipment over the upcoming summer break. There are also other
projects that are being considered.
