Introduction

The first year of our periodical photomagazine haspast very well, and hopefully a few more years willbe added. During the past year our website fot theAPL Photomagazine, has been used / looked at byat least 4000 applicants. Most applicants camefrom Belgium and Holland , but there were alsospectators from France, Germany, Greece, Italy,Great Britain , and on top even from USA, Australieand Indonesia. As you have probably noticed the latest edition ofour journal had some changes in its outfit, and didbecame a far more modern look.We have received lots of posisitive reactions on thischange-over, for which we want to thank allparticipants who informes us on it. We surely hopeall other spectators and readers will appreciate andaccept these changes as well, for which I have nodoubt at all. We did not make big changes, but weaimed at a more cooler and modern look.On top of this more modern look we installed alsoan English version on the site, for which I do thankthe people for making the translations. This edition contains works and pictures from a fewphotographers and models, who gave their verybest of their portofolio for publishing. For those who love it , there is as usual ourcompetition, stories about photography and theirperformers, and an extended calendar. As from this edition on , we will follow severalfamous phtographers, and will publish quite a fewof their fantastic works.Maybe this will be an inspiration towards newthemes, or a way to follow their ingeniuosphotograhic works. Enough reasons to discuss andexpose their works in our magazine.Again this APL photomagazine contains lots ofexplicit beauties on photographic performance. Wedo wish you all very much reading- , but mostlywatching-pleasure.

I joined 1x.com, the largest and best knowncurating photosite of the world, about two yearsago. It has been a challenge to gain recognitionhere because there are so many talented memberswho participate.

I was born in 1949 in Diest, a small town locatedapproximately 60km from Brussels and also fromAntwerp. My interest in Photography started whenI was about 18 years old, and in those days we hadno digital cameras so of course I worked withfilm/analogue. However, my real interest backthen was in making short films. I participated inseveral National and International competitions.

When I was about 30, I became President of anamateur film and photography club, and alsoswitched over to photography, as making moviestook too much time.

I did some studies at the Art Academy of Hasselt,in basic drawing, and studied a bit more in the80’s. However I want to emphasize that I ammostly self-taught both in Photography andPhotoshop.

My profession is teaching. I started with primaryschool, and eventually went on to teach highschool. I am also a traffic expert, and I managetraining centers for driving school teachers. As myprofessional life took on more importance andrequired most of my time, I spent about 25 yearsof my life focused on my career, and did not doany photography.

Seven years ago, I returned to photography, andthis time I learn to use digital equipment. Thiswas a new adventure for me and I felt like theentire world lay at my feet with so many newpossibilities. Processing a RAW image inPhotoshop was a revelation to me.I found Photoshop the perfect instrument totransform my photographs into paintings. I joinedmany photo sites all over the world and at thesesites I discovered the power of my creativity anddeveloped my own style. In my own country Ibecame a well-known photographer in the

Abstract genre. As people became interested inmy work I was asked to organize workshops andexhibitions in both Belgium and the Netherlands.

I would like to share a little about my own creativeprocess. and what I consider when making mypictures. I like Modern Art, and I am thrilled byminimalistic work. While it may seem easy – itis not. I always try to create a pure andminimalistic look with a strong composition. I usea mix of colors, lines, movement and objects. Iwant my images to be transformed and have therichness of paintings, which contain a strongemotional content. To accomplish this I usecreative editing as needed.I have learned through patience and practice toobserve light, colors, lines, shapes and planeswhen I am out taking pictures. On the weekends Ivisit many places in close proximity to my home.I have learned that when I am aware of mysurroundings there is always something new to seeand to capture. It could be almost anything – lightthat is different, the weather, and a season withspecial colors. I never come home without takingpictures. You can find Abstracts on every corner,or house- you just use your imagination.

I often take pictures when I go hiking with my dearwife. She has a great deal of patience (thank God)so I am able to concentrate easily. I love to traveland have been to many places, sometimes withouttaking photos. These days I travel in Europebecause I want to drive in my own car. I can anddo visit many cities – Paris, Brussels, Antwerp,Lyon, Marseille, The Hague, Amsterdam, andRotterdam… to name a few.

When I return home with my RAW files my nextchallenge is to try to captivate the viewer with oneor a few lines in an image. I take my timeprocessing files; one image can take hours andmore. Many times when I am done there is a bigdifference between the RAW file and the endresult. My aim here is to show an abstract workthat also conveys feelings.

Art photography Limburg 8

I have no favorite photographers and artists, though I admire many for their creativity. For example, I have learned a lot by studyingthe Flemish, French and Dutch painters. Iadmire how they used beautiful colors, alsohow they controlled the light. At the sametime I do not want to be like them because Iwant to leave my own footprint. So they arethere for me as a source of inspiration formy own vision.

I became the Administrator for the AbstractGroup by 1X.com and look forward to thisjob serving and working with all themembers.

Best regards,Gil

HenriCartier-Bresson

Henrie Cartier-Bresson was born on Aug 22 nd ,1908 in Chanteloup, France. He was the oldest ofthe 5 children from an entrepreneur in textiles, and grow up in a prosperous family. His parentsagreed with Henri’s wish to become an artist.Henrie Cartier-Bresson did study at the LycéeCondoret in Paris, but did not graduated. Theyoung man showed early his love towardsliterature and art, especially the painting art andthe attitude of the surrealists. After high schoolhe went to André Lhote, a cubist, where hestarted to paint.

When released from the army, where he wasstationed in Paris, he travelled to Africa andvisited also Mexico and the USA. During thesevoyages he made a whole lot photo-pictures, withhis first camera, a Brownie, which he got as apresent.Back in Europe , he really got addicted to

the photography. He travelled in Europe withAndré Pieyre de Mandiargues and Leonor Fini.

Art photography Limburg 31

Henrie Cartier-Bresson called his camera hissketchbook, which he took along with him all hislife , making a career as a photograph. In 1932,he discovered a very new type camera : Leica. Incomparison with his older Brownie, this wassmall, light and easy manageable device. Due tothe precise object lens and the 35 mm film, thepossibility was created for catching spontaneousmovements. He made several compositions andfantastic images; pictures which he neverretouched or reframed. His opinion was that alltreatments should be actioned during the shotitself, and not afterwards.

Henrie Cartier-Bresson hated manipulations.hephotographed what he saw, by using black / whitepictures, in which he captured the emotion intight , almost geometrical compositions.According to Cartier-Bensonthe art ofphotography was : “putting the head, the eye andthe heart on the same line”

During the summer of 1930 , Henrie Cartier-Bresson held his first exhibitions in Mexico, NewYork and Madrid. He used the gallery Julien Levysin New york and the Club Atheneo in Madrid.atthe same time he did get a publication fromCharles Peignot in the magazine “Arts et Métiers

Graphiques”. He made his exhibition in Mexicotogether with Alvarez Bravo in het Palacio de

Bellas Artes tentoon.During his shows from his pictures he becomes afriend with another photograph, Paul Strand, whointroduced him to the world of movies. He thanbecomes second regie- assistant from Jean Renoirfor the movie “une partie de champagne”, and leftthe art of photography at that time. In 1939 he is, together with Jacques Becker and André Zvobodathe assistant for “ la Regle du jeu”. During thisperiod he made a handfull Renoir-movies, for hewhich he received celebrations.

In 1940 , at the German invasion , his life took adramatical turn. Serving in the army, he wascaptured very quick by the German troops. He wasdeported to a prison camp for a period of 3 years. In 1943, after having tried two times before

Art photography Limburg 32

without success, he finally escaped and becamea resistance fighter from the MNPGD, a groupoffering help to prisoners and fugitives. It is therehe restarted with photography, and becomes amember of professional photographers , whohave framed the liberation of Paris. He published“ Le Retour “ , a documentary about therepatriation of prisoners of war and deportedpeople.

Henrie Cartier-Bresson was not the only one ,convinced of the fact that photography , inventedin 1839, was a better medium for portrets thanthe painting art. He pointed out the technicalperfection photography is using to reproduce aface. However the portrets he is making are froman even higher dimension. He manages tophotograph the essence of someone’s nature, and

to center the photographed person in his images. This can be find in all his pictures he took from verywell known persons like Che Guevara, TrumanCapone, Marlin Monroe, the Dalai Lama andothers.

And also in his shoots from the prostitudes ofAllicante, or the Portugese sailors, or the childrenin the streets all over the world.he shows us somany different faces and silhouettes. He knowsexactly how to take the shot in order to make theimage ageless, human and universal.

In 1947, he created the photograph societyMagnum, together with Robert Capa, GeorgeRodger, William Vandivert en David Seymour. Theintention was to become better than any otherusual society. As it was a collaboration of highlytalented photographers, with high qualityexpectations.

Art photography Limburg 33

After the second world war Henri restarted hismany voyages. He took a picture of MohandasGhandi, a short while before he was murdered bya fanaticus. In his photos the building of the BerlinWall can also be seen. He also could make photosin countries , such as China and the USSR , whereother press photographers from the West werenot allowed.By his return to France in 1952, he published hisfirst photobook “ Images a la sauvette “ at Teriadeprinting house. Herein we can find many of hisbetter works , which he made over the past twodecennia , and creating a very rich collection.

During the last 20 years of his photographic career, he again travelled around the world with his

favourite Leica, his trademark. In 1970 he stopswith photography and returns to his first love : artpainting. In 2003 Henrie Cartier-Bresson took a veryimportant decision , in order to protect his legacyas an artist and to protect and preserve his works,

Art photography Limburg 34

by creating together with his wife and daughter ,the society “ Fondation Henri Cartier- Benson”.Henri Cartier- Benson died in Aug 2004, at the ageof 95 , in his house at Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, SouthFrance.

“ A camera is for me like a sketchbook, an intuitiveand spontaneous device, master of the momentitself that, visually , simultaneously asks questionsand gives answers. In order to point out the“world” , one should be connected with that whatthe objective lens has selected. This tendencydemands a very strong concentration, a sensitivityand a feeling for geometry. By restricting theresources and by forgetting themselves ,asimplicity of expression can be achieved.”

Art photography Limburg 36

My name is Martine, and i ‘ m a 40 years oldphotographer from Leuven, Belgium. A description ofmyself , being a photographer is very difficult to do;however two weeks ago I received a compliment ,which I want to share with all of you.You will only recognize true talent, when aphotographer succeeds in getting you out of yourcomfort-zone ( through using his style and outfits ), butthen again by proving with each of his images , that theonly limitation a person can have , is the one which isin his brain.Never before I felt so relaxed during my shoots, neverbefore the result did astonish me that hard.Martine Cools & Harold Jacobs, thank you so much foryour time, your efforts and your talents. You are thegreatest , as well as photographers as in persons !!

At the moment I work as a medical secretary /assistant, and part-time as a photographer. This I dowith our own small enterprise “ JC Foto”, which Iestablished with my partner here in Leuven. Ourfacebook page can be find HERE.Why i love photography ?There is a lot in photography which draws myattention. With words I can only try to express it byusing the words : getting impressed by something.Getting impressed by colors, by lighting, by the modelslook, by the intensive feelings at a marriage, by thespecific traits of a person , and then finaly in trying tocatch these impressions on photos :

What is important, what does not add up ? Moving with the camera, getting closer, going a bit more tothe left. Yeah, that s it ! Just I want to show it.Photography means for me getting excited by the beauty of the model, of the moment, the beautywhich is often hidden in small things. Mostly people don’t know they are “ beauty “, that they have aspecific expression, or that it just completes the whole picture !The best compliment which I love with my pictures is :” fantastic how you have put that on paper ! ”and not “ that is a nice picture”.Knowing that there are people , who have works from me, hanged up in their homes, makes me a thevery happiest photographer in the world.Future ?I would like to be the photographer at a model enterprise. Once I will be able in getting the perfectshots together , and than I will contact an agency.Regards,

I discovered the works from Leon at the exhibition from “Mine-Art2” in the renovated buildings fromthe mine in Waterschei / Genk.Due to those works , I have asked him to publish a series of black / white pictures. His soft spot is landscape photography , as well in black as in color images. He aims in making his shootsin such a way that the spectator gets sucked in by the picture, and subsequently wants to discover everydetail in it.On top of that he wants to tell a story, which would be interpreting on a free base by the spectator.

Born on August 1 st, 1994. I m a very indecisive person, with a very low self image. After having donea photographic shoot , and due to the positive reactions on it, it became my passion and hobby. I wantedto prove to all , who did despise me, that I was worth a whole lot more ! That became my motivation !I love the model-job very much and sincerely hope to move up very quickly in that branch of work.
