Art Bra auction ready for last hurrahBy Renee Lapham Collins

Daily Telegram Special Writer

TECUMSEH — Never been tothe Art Bra Auction? Oct. 20 might

be your last chance to experiencethis unique fundraiser, benefitingthe Women’s Health Center atProMedica Herrick Hospital.

Shelley Lim, cultural andleisure services director for thecity of Tecumseh, is one of theseven committee members whoorganize the auction each year. This is the seventh and final year for the event, Lim said.

“It’s a fantastic event,” shesaid. “Seven years ago, we made acommitment to Herrick MemorialHospital Women’s Health Center that we would raise $50,000 and we believe this year we will bemeeting that goal, so once weaccomplish that, we want toexplore different options for fundraising and try somethingnew.”

The auction is set for 5:30 to7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at thePurple Pear Tree, 109 W. LoganStreet, one block north of down-town Tecumseh. A typical auction

features 70-100 decorated bras

that patrons bid on in a silent auc-tion format. Tickets are $30 eachand include food, wine and other beverages and live entertainment. This year’s entertainer is the BullHalsey blues band from Chelsea.Lim encourages patrons to pur-chase tickets in advance from thePurple Pear Tree or Evans StreetStation. A few tickets should beavailable at the door, she said.

“We will have some live models wearing the wearable art pieces,”Lim said. “It’s a little edgy, but it’sreally a fun evening.”

Lim said the auction is thebrainchild of Paula Holtz,Tecumseh’s economic develop-ment director. Beth Kennedy, Angela Wright, Aldolfo Lim,

Linda Hewlett and Bret Taylor

round out the committee.“We are still accepting entries,”

Lim said. “I am amazed every  year at the creativity of the artistssubmitting their work. When we

put out our call for entriesthroughout the county andbeyond, we are looking for artists’interpretation of bra art. It couldbe a bra that is decorated or cre-ated. We have had photographers, jewelers, pastels, watercolors, oilpaintings.

“We try not to put any con-straints on the artists — folks havecreated their own expressions.”

Lim said everything last year sold and the event raised $14,000.

“Everything went home withsomebody,” she said. “We had 200to 250 people last year — a nicecrowd.”

Beth Kennedy of Evans StreetStation said the finale will be “bit-tersweet.”

“We have been putting on thisevent for seven years and we wantto go out with a bang,” Kennedy said. “There are several reasonsand motivations for this being our final event, we are fulfilling our $50,000 pledge to the Women’s

Health Center at Herrick and we

are all very involved inmany philan-thropicevents. So,

this will be agreat party —our best yet.

“I think the reasonthis event has been sosuccessful is so many local businesses support it.Everything is donated—mar-kets and local restaurantsprepare food for 200-plus peopleso all proceeds are donated andgo directly to the cause.”

Kennedy called the event “cool,one-of-a-kind and like nothing I’veever seen.”

“It’s done in really good taste, though, and we have fun with it,”she said.

Lim sees the group moving onto something equally fun andcrowd-pleasing.

“The committee as a wholehas enjoyed being involved in rais-ing funds and I know we will comeup with something in the future,”said Lim. “This is such a grass-roots event and we enjoy being so

involved in the community.”
